You can almost hear the sighs of relief from the readers of the Daily Mail, which publication has no real equivalent in the U.S. — think of the bastard child of People magazine and the National Enquirer.
Interestingly enough, I learned recently that the heirs of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha have neglected to get the British monarch’s permission to marry since the last child of Duke Carl Eduard died, which makes their marriages invalid under British law, and so there is nobody now qualified to apply for reinstatement of the Dukedom of Albany (of which they were deprived under the Titles Deprivation Act for fighting for Germany against Britain in World War I). So that title is technically extinct under British law and would be available for Prince Harry and his squeeze when they get married, if they don’t do the expected thing and get made Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Oddly enough, the heirs to the crown of Hannover have been very conscientious about getting British royal permission to marry, most recently for the marriage of the current pretender Prince Ernest Augustus to a princess of Monaco (although he loses his right to the British throne for marrying a Roman Catholic).
In any event, it’s a very spiff-looking document; the British are always good about that sort of thing.

The Chinese Navy — officially the People’s Liberation Army Navy — already has one operational carrier, the Liaoning, which it bought unfinished from Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union. That ship joined the Chinese fleet in 2012 and began its first operations four years later, putting China in the small group of seafaring powers that maintain aircraft carriers, led by the United States, which has 10 Nimitz-class carriers alone.

Imagine explosive charges so precise they can cut apart an incoming warhead milliseconds before it hits your vehicle. That’s the operating principle for Iron Curtain, an Active Protection System whose computer brain makes 50,000 calculations in the time you take to blink.
Installed on a frame around the vehicle that looks like a militarized shower rod, the Iron Curtain’s charges propel tiny projectiles straight down like a guillotine. They slice the warhead so precisely that, in 80 percent of tests, it doesn’t even detonate.

“Ironically, the very same soil that caused the leaning instability and brought the Tower to the verge of collapse, can be credited for helping it survive these seismic events,” said Professor Mylonakis, a person part of the 16-person study from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol. The soil allegedly lessened the earthquake vibrations underneath to not wreck the famous tower.

The Mossad operation in January that got half a ton of top-secret Iranian nuclear weapons program documents out of Iran and back to Israel in less than 24 hours has provided Iranian leaders with multiple aftershocks. For one thing most Iranians don’t care about the document theft. No Iranians were injured in the operation, it was assumed to have been made possible by the widespread corruption in Iran and an Iranian religious dictatorship that seems to care more about destroying Israel than improving the lives of Iranians. When news of the Mossad operation were made public by the Israelis at the end of April the public opinion polls in Iran showed that most Iranians didn’t care and those that paid any attention to the matter felt it was just another example of how incompetent their government was and why change was needed. The Iranian government was justifiably concerned that publicizing these documents, as Israel was now doing, would lead to the cancellation of the 2015 treaty that lifted sanctions on Iran. The American president will announce the new U.S. position on May 12 th and it does not look good for Iran. The stolen documents show that the nuclear program did exist and apparently is still underway disguised as many different scientific research projects.

North Korea has set its clocks forward thirty minutes, joining South Korea on the same time zone, North Korean state media reported a little after midnight Saturday.
“This is the first step in the process of reconciling the national after the historic reunion at the third North-South summit and bringing the North and South together,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported, revealing the standard times of North and South Korea are now the same. The decision to reset the clocks came after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met for the first time on April 27 at a landmark summit on South Korean soil.
North Korea turned its clocks back half an hour in 2015 as a rebuke of the time standards set in place by the “wicked Japanese imperialists.” The South Koreans did the same thing in the mid-1950s, but the country later switched back to encourage bilateral trade between Japan and South Korea.

When scientists in France set out to sequence 1,000 yeast genomes, they looked at strains from all the places you might expect: beer, bread, wine.
But also: sewage, termite mounds, tree bark, the infected nail of a 4-year-old Australian girl, oil-contaminated asphalt, fermenting acorn meal in North Korea, horse dung, fruit flies, human blood, seawater, a rotting banana. For five years, two geneticists—Gianni Liti, from the Université Côte d’Azur, and Joseph Schacherer, from the Université de Strasbourg—asked for samples of Saccharomyces cerevisiae from nearly everyone they met, whether doctors in French Guiana collecting human feces or Mexican tequila makers.
“It’s easy to get a thousand wine strains,” says Schacherer, “But that’s not how we wanted to proceed.” They wanted little-known wild strains of yeast that live all over the world in a great variety of environments. And they wanted these samples to see if they could confirm their suspicions about the historical origin of yeast. The results of their analysis, published in Nature, suggest that yeast came from, of all places, China.

The team’s results are the first demonstration of an industrial, scalable method for manufacturing high-quality graphene that is tailored for use in membranes that filter a variety of molecules, including salts, larger ions, proteins, or nanoparticles. Such membranes should be useful for desalination, biological separation, and other applications.
“For several years, researchers have thought of graphene as a potential route to ultrathin membranes,” says John Hart, associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity at MIT. “We believe this is the first study that has tailored the manufacturing of graphene toward membrane applications, which require the graphene to be seamless, cover the substrate fully, and be of high quality.”

According to a report in the Guardian, Coleridge’s lead coffin, along with those of his wife Sara, his daughter, his son-in-law and his grandson, were discovered in the crypt of St Michael’s church in Highgate – which was built on the site of a demolished mansion.
Literary pilgrims have travelled to the church for years to pay their respects at a memorial plaque to Coleridge in the church, unaware that his remains were concealed just below the memorial slab inscribed with an epitaph he wrote himself.

Dubbed the ‘Salwa Canal’, the project is to be funded entirely by private investors from the KSA and UAE and executed by Egyptian firms, building on their experience widening the Suez Canal.
The canal would run from Salwa in the west to Ras Abu Gamys, 37 miles (60 km) to the east. It would be more than 200 yards (200 m) wide and 50-65 feet (15-20 m) deep, and thus be able to accommodate merchant and passenger ships of up to 968 feet (295 m) long and 108 feet (33 m) wide, with a maximum draught of 40 feet (12 m). The estimated cost would be around 2.8 billion Saudi riyals (app. $747 million).
As it is a unilateral project, the canal would run entirely on KSA territory, less than a mile (about 1 km) south of the Saudi-Qatari border. This would leave a strip of Saudi territory on the new island, which the Kingdom aims to use to install a military base, and a dumping site for waste from a nuclear power plant, yet to be built.
That would be amusing.
