Whereas refusing to wear a mask outdoors in DC is an act of resistance, in Florida it’s expected. Some businesses have their own indoor mask mandates, but they are often loosely enforced if at all. At first, mingling and schmoozing in a crowded bar without a mask felt naughty. By my second night in town, I reveled in the freedom. No flimsy piece of cloth would slow down my ability to slam old fashioneds and inhale jumbo shrimp.
New Yorkers love to express disgust and horror at videos of the pool parties and clubs in the south. They ignore the awkward truth that their own state and neighboring New Jersey have the highest COVID-19 death rates despite strict lockdown measures. Free Florida sits comfortably below average. I suspect the NY outrage at pina colada-sipping Sunshine Staters is more down to jealousy.

The term authority has almost vanished from discussion across the whole political spectrum, from the intersectional left to the radical right, in favour of an emphasis on power. Yet the distinction between authority and power is cardinal to the history of Western political thought. As Arendt pointed out, the concept of authority was unknown in the Greek polis, which is why Plato was compelled to reinvent the figure of the despot, or the head of a household, in his attempt to introduce the principle as the polis crumbled. In Rome, by contrast, the prototype for every modern Republic, authority was linked to the conviction of a sacredness of the foundation; hence the figure of the “founding fathers” as represented by a “senate” composed of statesmen who represent authority, but do not have power, which is conceived as an unbridled force.
With the evaporation of authority, aimless power becomes the governing reality, jealously protective of its privileges. The characterisation of Trump as an authoritarian, the improbable chief vector of attack since he first descended through the Rubicon at Trump Tower in June 2015, relates to this dilemma. The key project of his administration consisted of an attempt to reimpose American authority and mythos against a headless coalition of the permanent administration, corporate media, intelligence agencies and miscellaneous well-funded fronts. Lacking any basis for legitimacy itself, what united and defined this force was opposition to the office and the person of the president: ersatz authority as transgressive opposition to authority and the determination to destroy it.
Witch-hunt culture is nothing new.

ZMan does a review.
The American Conservative Union (CPAC) and America First (AFPAC) had their big annual events this weekend in Orlando Florida. Both were moved from Washington to Florida because of the Covid panic. Both are struggling to get their footing now that Trump has left office, so it makes sense for both groups to hold their event in the former president’s home state. That and Florida has become the last bastion of rational, conservative government, where the people remain free.
ZMan keeps an eye on this stuff, as many of us do not.

Back in February 2020, the Establishment Press was mostly worrying about the pandemic in terms of how it could lead to racism against Asians by Trump supporters. Now, during the Biden Era, with blacks being caught on video perhaps a little more often than normal attacking blacks (or it could just be randomness or it could just be that blacks have been exuberantly acting out violently more than usual toward everybody all during the Racial Reckoning), they are back to worrying about how Trump is at fault.

Derek Chauvin goes on trial for murder in the death of George Floyd on March 8. His trial has been separated from that of the other three officers who have been charged; theirs will begin in August. Chauvin is the principal defendant. Of the four policemen involved, two were on something like their fourth day on the job. The third was a tiny guy, also not very experienced. Chauvin was the only officer on the scene who had the experience and the strength to deal with an oversized career criminal who was hopped up on drugs, and he took the lead.
I want to see how they argue that somebody can be choked to death by kneeling on the side of his neck.

Customers have noticed that “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words,” a documentary on the renowned supreme court justice, is no longer available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
To celebrate Black History, Amazon created a page called “Amplify Black Voices,” which “features a curated collection of titles to honor Black History Month across four weekly themes (Black Love, Black Joy, Black History Makers, and Black Girl Magic).”
On Amazon Prime, the company added multiple films, including docu-dramas and documentaries on the country’s first black supreme court justice, Thurgood Marshall. The site even added two films about Anita Hill, the woman who made claims that Thomas sexually harassed her.
But Thomas’s documentary has been removed in all regions.

We keep hearing about the end of California. The cost of living, the homelessness, the public schools, the shoddy roads and bridges have prompted a decades-long exodus that has accelerated dramatically in the Age of the Pandemic. The progressive canard — but everyone wants to be here! — is a canard, and it’s being used to sidestep an uncomfortable truth that conservatives love to drone on about: in California, there is no political marketplace. Which is true. It’s not just that Democrats enjoy a monopoly. It’s that the state GOP, which used to produce presidents and statesmen, has morphed into a risible adumbration of its former self.
But lurking behind the headlines is the new vice president, who, until recently, was California’s junior senator and is now nicely positioned to win her party’s 2024 presidential nomination. The plight of California will be campaign fodder — because Kamala’s rise and her state’s decline feel like the same story.

In his classic 2008 essay “1000 True Fans,” Kevin Kelly predicted that the internet would transform the economics of creative activities:
To be a successful creator you don’t need millions. You don’t need millions of dollars or millions of customers, millions of clients or millions of fans. To make a living as a craftsperson, photographer, musician, designer, author, animator, app maker, entrepreneur, or inventor you need only thousands of true fans.
…
But the internet took a detour. Centralized social platforms became the dominant way for creators and fans to connect. The platforms used this power to become the new intermediaries — inserting ads and algorithmic recommendations between creators and users while keeping most of the revenue for themselves.
The good news is that the internet is trending back to Kelly’s vision. For example, many top writers on Substack earn far more than they did at salaried jobs. The economics of low take rates plus enthusiastic fandom does wonders. On Substack, 1,000 newsletter subscribers paying $10/month nets over $100K/year to the writer.

More than 30 bills on ranked-choice voting have been proposed in state legislatures across the country, according to Fair Vote, the nonprofit group that is promoting the system nationally.
Ranked-choice voting is a system that allows voters to rank a first, second, and third choice, or more. A voter casting a ranked-choice ballot, for example, might select three candidates in order of preference out of six candidates for a congressional seat.
Proponents say ranked-choice voting is a moderating force and superior because it means voters don’t have to settle for the lesser of two evils. Opponents say the system is problematic because it is confusing to voters and can lead to outcomes where the candidate winning the most votes loses the election.
The effort to promote ranked-choice voting largely has been financed by a liberal donor who is the daughter-in-law of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
This is sometimes known as the Australian Ballot because elections in Australia use it a lot. It is also known as the ‘automatic run-off” system.

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR5, the so-called “Equality Act,” to amend various provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If it passes the Senate and is signed into law by the president, the bill will cause incalculable damage to our society—with a particular assault on women and religious believers. The bill is expressly designed to impose a controversial sexual-ideological scheme on the American public, and to forbid any religiously-based objections to that agenda.

‘We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs, that are aligned with far right ideologies and seek nothing but harm and division,’ reads the letter. ‘These fringe internet accounts stand against affirmative medical care of transgender people, and they stand against the right to self-identification of transgender people in this country… they stand against trans, women’s and gay rights by aligning themselves with far-right tropes and stances.’

Tucker Carlson reviewed the Smith College story in a 12-minute segment of his FOX News show last night. FOX News has posted the text here. I have lifted the video from the Tucker Carlson Tonight Facebook page and embedded it below. It brings the story to life.

Eight Republican Michigan state senators sent letters to acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Wednesday demanding investigations into Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s handling of COVID-19 in the state’s nursing homes.
Residents of Michigan’s long-term care facilities represent 5,549 of the 16,436 suspected and confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the state since the start of the pandemic, according to the state’s latest available reporting. The GOP lawmakers requested Nessel and Wilkinson investigate whether Whitmer’s April 15 executive order, which prohibited nursing homes in most cases from barring admission to residents who were previously hospitalized with the virus, contributed to the death toll.

For years, Big Tech, Hollywood elites, and Democrats in power have stretched their reach to gain unprecedented control over our speech, our culture, and our way of life. From censoring conservative speech on social media to de-platforming a sitting president of the United States, the left has sought to win over public opinion through shaming and smearing the opposition, rather than winning hearts and minds in the battle of ideas.
The current chapter in this larger saga is taking place in the House of Representatives this week. The House just passed H.R. 5, ironically called the “Equality Act.” This bill is a patently unconstitutional assault on religious freedom, which also weakens long-standing civil rights law by equating biological sex with “sexual orientation and gender identity.”
This legislation at its core would take civil rights laws designed to protect classes of people based upon immutable and objective characteristics, and would instead base it upon subjective ideas about gender, and political viewpoints about sexual orientation.

The U.S. Labor Department’s inspector general said this week that roughly $100 million in fraudulent unemployment insurance claims were paid in 2020 to criminals who are already in jail. That’s a tiny share of the estimated tens of billions of dollars in jobless benefits states have given to identity thieves in the past year. To help reverse that trend, many states are now turning to a little-known private company called ID.me. This post examines some of what that company is seeing in its efforts to stymie unemployment fraud.
