How can mathematics learning in primary school be facilitated? A recent study conducted by the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, had shown that our everyday knowledge strongly influences our ability to solve problems, sometimes leading us into making errors. This is why UNIGE, in collaboration with four research teams in France, has now developed an intervention to promote the learning of maths in school. Named ACE-ArithmEcole, the programme is designed to help schoolchildren surpass their intuition and informal knowledge, and rely instead on the use of arithmetic principles.

Cancer helplines are facing a surge in calls from patients because overstretched NHS doctors and nurses do not have time to care for them, a charity has warned.
Macmillan Cancer Support said it had received more than 240,000 inquiries to its support line in 2019, with staff reporting that many patients were left distressed because they felt they could not question the health workers in charge of their care.
How about that GREAT government-provided health care? Don’t you wish we had a system like that in the U.S.?
Bernie and Lieawatha sure do.

A few days ago, Steve wrote an important and insightful piece called “The Genealogy of Free Stuff.” Citing a Wall Street Journal editorial, Steve stated that Elizabeth Warren’s agenda is so far beyond extravagant that “socialism” seems an inadequate adjective.
Steve offered two explanations for the leftward lurch he described. First, hard-left Democrats are convinced that anyone can beat President Trump, and thus see this as the time to go for broke (no pun originally intended). Second, Trump has abandoned fiscal restraint, and therefore Democrats need to offer ever more goodies to remain ahead in this department.

Forty-two homeless people in Los Angeles were the victims of homicide in 2019, the third consecutive year in which the number has risen, NPR reported on Tuesday.
This increase is happening even as the number of homicides overall has fallen in recent years. This has led to a reality that while only 1% of the city’s residents are homeless, that segment of the population makes up approximately 17% of the homicide victims in Los Angeles during 2019.

Police Commissioner Michael Harrison announced during a news conference at City Hall with Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young that of the 347 homicide cases that have been reported in the city this year as of Tuesday morning, only 32.1% have been cleared, meaning that a suspect or suspects were arrested or died before trial, among other factors. In 2010, the clearance rate was 56%, the national average for a city the size of Baltimore. However, that rate dropped to 30.5% in 2015. The national clearance rate for cities with more than 500,000 residents remains at 57%, according to data compiled by the FBI.

Illinois’ population decreased in 2019 by an estimated 51,250 people, or 0.4%, marking the sixth consecutive year the state has lost residents, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Since the turn of the decade, Illinois has lost more residents than any other state, with a drop of about 159,700 people, or 1.2% of its population. Only three other states have shrunk since 2010: Connecticut, Vermont and West Virginia — with West Virginia losing the largest share of its residents, a 3.3% decline.

New York was one of only 10 states to suffer a total population decline in 2018-19 — its fourth consecutive annual decrease after five years of growth, and the largest population drop of any state.
Only West Virginia, Alaska and Illinois saw their populations fall at a faster percentage clip.

ZMan lifts his lamp beside the golden door.
The first rule of organizing is to develop as many on-ramps as possible for people to come into your thing. The reason outsider politics remains fringe is it tends to have just one entry point and that door is guarded by weirdos. The libertarian movement never got out of the valley of weirdos, because it deliberately disconnected itself from the mainstream, despite so much help from Conservative Inc. The key is offering many paths to entry and not being ideological about those paths.

This short video is suddenly everywhere. It comes from a livestream of the service at the church near Fort Worth where someone opened fire on parishioners with what looks like a shotgun. He was immediately shot by two legally armed persons, one of whom reportedly was a security guard. It appears that altogether, there were six people who immediately pulled guns in response to the shooter.

Voices of the Crust like The New Yorker love this kind of story. What they don’t tell you (and maybe are too dim to figure out) is that these people could ‘pay higher taxes’ at any moment just by writing a check to the Treasury. So what’s with the push for higher taxes? They want to raise tax rates to levels that wouldn’t pinch them at all but would leave the rest of us rubes very poor indeed, then we wouldn’t compete with the ultra-wealthy for things like New York apartments or seats in popular restaurants or the other things that wealthy people like to do but don’t want to compete with the lower orders for.
(The reason Warren Buffet pays a lower tax rate than his secretary is because she pays taxes on her wages, which are taxed as ‘ordinary income’; Warren Buffet doesn’t have any ‘ordinary income’ because he doesn’t work for wages. His money comes from selling stock for capital gains, which are taxed at a lower rate for very good reasons, to encourage people to invest their money rather than just spending it.)

historic motion has been passed in Spain by the city council in León demanding the separation of the province from the region of Castilla y León, which was formed in 1983 shortly after Spain returned to democracy after the death of General Franco.
“We’ve never felt ourselves to be part of Castilla y León. It’s a fictitious region; León has nothing to do with Castile,” said the Leonese mayor, José Antonio Díez.
After Friday’s vote in León city hall, several other towns across the province followed suit, demanding that what they consider a historic region comprising León, Salamanca and Zamora split away from Castilla y León.
And the seams start coming apart.

While it is a truism that in many respects some form of taxation is needed to provide necessities to a society, in practice many government and social detriments arise as either a consequence to or are derivative of tax policy. I’ve found for myself that fostering a personal goal of avoiding specific taxation or in many cases excessive taxation generally comports with a greater advocacy of morality in several beneficial forms.

Did you give or receive any books for Christmas? If so, were they physical books, or electronic ones? I suspect that, while many of us have exchanged real, printed books as presents, eBooks were far less popular, and unless you give a voucher, they’re almost impossible to give as presents anyway. So why have eBooks failed so miserably, when other media such as movies and music now sell and rent so well online?
The answer is, of course, their publishers. And in the last week or so, eBook publishers have delivered yet another blow to their own businesses, by proving in the CJEU – Europe’s highest court of justice – that the eBooks they sell are truly worthless.
Be the first on your block to run round in circles, jump up and down, scream, and shout.

Fire is extremely versatile: it’s hard to say which of its functions were most valued by our ancestors. Therefore, if we measure the energy use of a household fire and compare it to modern technology, we should not compare it to the energy use of a heating system or a cooking stove alone, but to the energy use of the entire household.
Sometimes the old ways are best.

On Friday, former Vice President Joe Biden vowed to not comply with any subpoena to testify in the Senate’s impeachment trial of President Trump. Such an action could be classified as obstruction of Congress, the same thing Trump was being impeached for. Biden began to backpedal over the weekend and he was aided in that effort by ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Sunday Today. Both used Biden’s “promise” to appoint former President Barack Obama to the Supreme Court as a smokescreen.
The Crust takes care of its own.

“We’re a visual deterrence in our red berets and our red satin jackets,” Sliwa told NBC News. “Nobody’s going to commit an attack when we’re around.

Two Democratic senators have been banned from visiting the Phillippines by its president, Rodrigo Duterte, for their support of a prominent critic.
Duterte also has warned any Americans who want to enter the Philippines will be required to get a visa if the United States refuses entry to those involved in the jailing of Philippines Senator Leila de Lima, who has harshly criticized Duterte’s bloody drug crackdowns.
The only reason I can think of for an American to go to the Philippines is by being assigned there by the military.

A decade ago, Time Magazine unveiled an in-depth article on the death of Detroit. One of the politicians whom the article blamed for Detroit’s woes was Rep. John Dingell.
The Dingell clan has held a congressional seat outside Detroit since 1932. Their 87-year tenure has not coincidentally coincided with the decline of a thriving industrial city into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
But it’s been good for the Dingells, three of whom have sat in their congressional seat since the days of Herbert Hoover, the rise of Hitler, and the radio age, and fattened their pockets on its sinecures.
It is the power of incumbency that commands you.

The Other McCain has the scoop.
Remember the deadly Dec. 10 attack just across the river in Jersey City, which was connected to the Black Hebrew Israelites cult. This followed months of reports of anti-Semitic harassment in New York perpetrated by black teenagers. Because the suspects were “people of color” (POC), these hate crimes were an embarrassment to the Left, which wants to blame Trump for increasing anti-Semitism. This is why the national news media, which goes into 24/7 coverage mode over any “hate crime” that can be blamed on right-wingers, politely ignored the increasing reports of black hoodlums harassing Jews in New York City. The progressive SJW backlash against De Blasio’s announcement was predictable.
