It’s come to this: Tom Steyer, one of the flailing Democratic presidential candidates who remains in the race only because he is rich and has plenty of money to spend on a vanity candidacy, tells an Iowa audience: “I know that people describe me as being a rich person, but that isn’t how I think of myself. My mom was from Minneapolis, Minnesota….”
And, as we all know, most poor people come from Minneapolis. Oh, wait….
I ‘identify’ as poor, too, but if I had Steyer’s money it wouldn’t prevent me from putting out a contract on Steyer. Doing well by doing good, as they say in Minneapolis. Or somewhere.

On Friday, The New York Times wrote one of those Strange New Respect pieces for Mitt Romney headlined “Mitt Romney, a Man Alone.” Times political writer Mark Leibovich touted how Romney “drew big press scrums” as the liberal hope for extending the impeachment trial.
It “places upon Mr. Romney a level of curiosity that goes beyond the quasi-celebrity treatment he already receives as the last pre-Trump standard-bearer of a Republican Party that feels about 80 years removed from the party that nominated him eight years ago.”
Eight years ago, Leibovich and the Times were mercilessly in ripping Romney as an entitled elitist who was cruel to his dog. But now? He inspires “nostalgia.”
Yeah, they want the type of good old Republican loser that McCain and Romney did so well.
Nothing reconciles me to eight years of Obama so much as the post-election activities of McCain and Romney. I suppose it’s too much to hope for him to get cancer and die.

Ronald Reagan was so far our oldest president. Opponents derided his age and purported lack of attention to governing. Yet President Trump will be 74 in June, a year older than Reagan when he sought reelection in 1984.
Trump’s leading challenger, Joe Biden, is 77. Bernie Sanders is 78, Michael Bloomberg is 77, and Elizabeth Warren is “only” 70, older than Reagan when he was first elected.
President Trump was impeached recently in the House, where “senior“ leadership means just that. Nancy Pelosi, soon to become the oldest House Speaker ever, is 79, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is 80, and Majority Whip James Clyburn is 79. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is 77, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is 69.
The Supreme Court has two even older justices. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 86, and Stephen Breyer at 81 are members of that small, elite group who are the deciders on many of the major policy issues of our day.

Current Mayor Bill de Blasio has a security detail provided by a unit of the New York Police Department, the New York Post noted. The detail accompanies the mayor everywhere — even when he travels overseas.
The newspaper said the NYPD has refused to disclose how much money is being spent on the security detail.

Though the WHO insisted that restricting travel to China during the outbreak simply wouldn’t be necessary, airlines and governments continued to cancel flights and tighten border restrictions. American Airlines has acquiesced to the pilots union, which filed a lawsuit demanding that flights to China be cancelled, and cancelled two of its routes. According to Business Insider, 43 airlines – Lufthansa, British Air, United, American, Air Canada, Air Seoul, Air France, etc. – have cancelled some or all routes to China, with some of the cancellations stretching out until late March. Most have cited a drop in demand as the reason as passenger plane traffic has plummeted. Russia has closed its border, Italy has cancelled flights to China, while the US and Japan have implemented the most urgent travel warnings advising citizens not to travel to China. Other governments, including the UK, have warned against travel to Hubei.

Earlier this month, Yuhao Wang and Jielun Zhang, Chinese students at the University of Michigan, drove past a gate guard at Naval Air Station Key West after ignoring instructions to turn around, leading military police on a 30-minute chase that ended in their capture where investigators found pictures of military buildings on a camera and cell phone.
The incident came just weeks after another Chinese citizen, Lyuyou Liao, was charged with unlawfully taking pictures of military buildings on Key West after walking around a perimeter fence and getting inside the base from the water, ignoring warnings from people nearby that it was a restricted area. Liao claimed he was trying to take pictures of the sunrise, but investigators only found pictures of the Truman Annex on his camera.
We don’t know exactly why the Chinese are paying so much attention to Naval Air Station Key West. While small, the base plays a big role in training, tech experimentation, and monitoring and tracking vessels offshore.

Upping the ante and further threatening downward spiraling US-Iraq relations, the Trump administration has now suspended all weapons deliveries to Iraq, including missile systems promised as part a $1.8 billion contract signed in 2016.
Department of Defense officials cited security concerns over the arms deliveries, also amid recent White House threats to actually impose sanctions on the country while completely severing military ties. However, most analysts see these latest threats – which also have been tied with demands the country pay back the “billions” spent on an air base should US forces be made to leave – as but an attempt to leverage greater Baghdad dependency on Washington (and not Tehran).

A Northern California housing community will be hit with more than $22,000 in cleanup costs after the county refused to pick up the tab, according to KPIX.
The cleanup at the Lakewood community in Castro Valley comes more than two years after the encampment was first reported to Alameda County in October 2017, as it was unclear whether the land belonged too the County, East Bay Regional Parks or the Lakewood Home Owner’s Association.
Foolish taxpayers. The function of government, as Jerry Pournelle famously said, is to hire and pay government workers — and not, apparently, to provide those paying the tab with anything so crass as services.

This continued trend has elicited howls of protest from union supporters who, of course, want to see an increase in union membership. It has also led several Democratic presidential candidates to make calls to reconfigure labor law. Bernie Sanders wants to double union membership and give federal workers the right to strike, as well as ban at-will contracts of employment, so that any dismissal could be subject to litigation under a “for cause” standard. Not to be outdone, Elizabeth Warren wants to make it illegal for firms to hire permanent replacements for striking workers. They are joined by Pete Buttigieg in demanding a change in federal labor law so that states may no longer pass right-to-work laws that insulate workers from the requirement to pay union dues in unionized firms. All of these new devices are proven job killers.
