The Race to Send Robots to Mine the Ocean Floor

Did you know that there was an ‘International Seabed Authority’? Whence comes their jurisdiction? Areas outside of the territorial waters of a nation-state are the common heritage of mankind, free for whoever wants to use them.
Basically it’s another U.N. power grab. I’m curious as to what would happen if a private company were to ignore what they had to say and went to work. Nothing good, I suspect.

The largest crime organization is not the Mafia, it’s the federal government.
Keep in mind that it wasn’t the FBI that put Al Capone in jail; it was the IRS. Murder, extortion, kidnapping, rape, prostitution – nothing matters to the government more than making sure they get their cut.
The U.N. is little more than an attempt to globalize the organized crime of over-reaching government. Doesn’t the U.N. help prevent wars? Yeah, at least to some degree, as long as the war might interfere with business. You can’t mine the ocean bottom (or asteroids) without cutting them in on a significant piece of the action. What happens when you audit the U.N.’s books? Nothing – because they don’t allow their books to be audited.
The biggest difference between the government and the Mafia? The Mafia is far, far more efficient and run by far more competent individuals.
