This course explores languages that have been deliberately constructed, including Esperanto, Klingon, and Tolkien’s Elvish. Students construct their own languages while considering the basic linguistic characteristics of various languages of the world. Through regular assignments, students describe the phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and writing system of their constructed language. The final assignment is a grammatical description of the new language.

A nitrogen-fixing maize grown in an indigenous region of Mexico has the ability to fertilize itself, recent research shows. Now, as a global company and U.S. scientists work to replicate this trait in other corn varieties, will the villages where the maize originated share fairly in the profits?
Why should they ‘share in the profits’? Did they genetically engineer the variety from something else?
Or is this just socialist rent-seeking on behalf of ‘poor igorant natives’ by ‘woke’ educated white people?
We report, you decide.

That’s a nicer chain than any job I ever had.
Seriously, when I worked at Dewey Ballantine after college, my office was ten times nicer than my apartment — the furniture was more comfortable, people came in every day to clean, the caterer came around twice a day with the snack trolley, the library had interesting books I could read on the firm’s dime, the cafeteria had nice food that I didn’t have to cook — every way an improvement.

The old stereotype says that leftists love humanity but hate people. I haven’t yet figured out the left’s peculiar combination of narcissism and self-loathing, but they do seem to dislike people in general. Particularly people who don’t agree with them about absolutely everything. Which, come to think of it, is nearly everyone, I suppose. But what I’m trying to get at is that I really don’t think that they’re motivated by their love of the downtrodden masses, as they claim to be. Leftists don’t love poor people. They just hate rich people. And many of their social policies appear to be more focused on hurting the rich than on helping the poor.
The proglodyte Upper Crust is especially embarrassed by success, because deep in their hearts they know they don’t deserve it.
As far as narcissism goes, well, thats what Virtue Signaling is all about: ‘Look at me, I’m Holier Than Thou!’

I find the spatial layout of a hotel room to be well suited to working, especially to writing. The desk is usually set in a corner, and very small, almost risibly so, as if to hint that work done seated, at a table, is a dumb idea. The bed is the room’s dominant feature. It occupies the centre, and allows different workspaces by configuring the pillows (throw and regular). The nightstands on either side double as storage and work spaces. No wonder that Vladimir Nabokov completed Pale Fire, my favorite book, while living in a suite at the Montreux Palace hotel.
True, working lying down brings its own challenges: it’s hard to avoid dozing off every few minutes. My solution is constant snacking, the fear of choking acting as a stimulant.

In the state’s rush to go green, the Public Utilities Commission is reviewing a proposal to achieve a state of “decarbonization,” a radical shift likely to lead to banning natural gas as an energy source in new homes and commercial buildings and replacing it with electricity.
No longer could restaurants connect to natural gas in new buildings — even though 98 percent of chefs in one survey preferred gas over electric. Nor could natural gas be used to heat water, dry clothes, and fuel furnaces, pool and spa heaters in newly built homes.
Hey, guys, plenty of room (and natural gas) in Texas.

“If you have a d***, you need to shut the f*** up on this one. Seriously! This is theirs; the right to choose is their unequivocal right. Not only do I believe they have the right to choose, I believe that they shouldn’t have to consult anybody, except for a physician, about how they exercise that right.
“Gentlemen, that is fair. And ladies, to be fair to us, I also believe that if you decide to have the baby, a man should not have to pay. That’s fair. If you can kill this motherf***er, I can at least abandon him. It’s my money, my choice.
“And if I’m wrong, then perhaps we’re wrong. So figure that sh-t out for yourselves.”

Now that the ten candidates have been finalized for the next Democratic presidential debate, the ground rules for the debate are being decided. One early rule is to ban all use of facts and logic from the debate, as they’ve increasingly been a tool of far-right extremists and have fallen out of favor with the Democrats’ progressive base.
Uh, that’s been true since the 1960s….

But I can. It’s an invasion, an attempt to wear down the economic resources of European countries that are on the brink already.
Hundreds have been arriving in Greece from Turkey each week, despite a deal struck between Turkey and the European Union which saw Ankara receives billions in funding from the bloc in return for stemming the flow.
Believed a Turk? That never works.
Nikos Dendias, Greece’s foreign minister, summoned the Turkish ambassador to “express Greece’s deep discontent” at the recent increase in arrivals with Turkey. The ambassador said Ankara was “committed” to the deal and that its policy had not changed after being asked how so many were managing to make it Greek shores.
Trump would have said ‘Ship them back.’ That’s why he’s President.

I had my six-month dental cleaning and check-up. I didn’t expect to see the same hygienist. At my last visit, she was planning a move, possibly to Portland but I told her she may want to re-think that. She got back yesterday and said parts of Oregon were beautiful, breathtaking, the waterfalls, cool breezes, deep emerald green forests and didn’t want to leave. They hiked every day. She grew up here in Florida and is ready for a change. What she wasn’t ready for was Portland. She said she’d never seen anything like it, and was shocked by the enormous homeless population. Tents everywhere. “They don’t bother you, she said, or panhandle”. But “you couldn’t help but feel ill at ease,” walking from the donut shop with a bag of fresh-baked donuts. She walked by a young man at 7:15 AM, shooting up in broad daylight. Drugs that come in from Mexico and China. She said another’s face was beaten to a pulp. The smell was awful. But Oregon she said, was truly breathtaking…
Well, just stay out of Portland. Problem solved.
