Well, we’re in for a major showdown now between the NCAA and California. We’re about to see a standoff unlike we’ve seen before because the NCAA has already said it’ll ban schools in the state from competing if players get paid.

On July 7, a young man from China crossed the border into Hong Kong, found the nearest KFC, and locked himself in the bathroom. He took out a pen and a paper sign, trembling at the thought of how his life was about to change. “I come from the mainland,” he wrote. “Thank you, Hongkongers! Don’t give up, fight for freedom!” Then he joined the protesters marching from Tsim Sha Tsui to West Kowloon, and held up his sign. When he returned to China the police arrested him, stripped him naked, forced him to sing “There is no new China without the Communist Party,” and held him in a room with forty other prisoners. They threatened to beat him to death for betraying the Chinese “race.”

Every now and then a piece of good writing manages to creep into National Review. I guess Rich Lowry has to sleep sometime.
Sometimes whataboutism is healthy. At an awards ceremony this weekend, Hillary Clinton said that Donald Trump had “turned American diplomacy into a cheap extortion racket.”
I’m trying to imagine a worse person to deliver this message. The Clinton Foundation excepted millions of dollars from foreign governments just when Hilary Clinton was secretary of state under Obama. Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Australia, Norway, and the Dominican Republic all gave.

In his new book, Proof!: How the World Became Geometrical, historian Amir Alexander advances an audacious claim: that Euclidean geometry profoundly influenced not just the history of mathematics, but also broader sociopolitical reality. In prose that makes his passion for the material both clear and catching, he describes how Euclid’s Elements present a vision of a perfectly rational order, but one that was viewed as purely theoretical: There was no place for geometrical ideals in messy reality. In the 1400s, Leon Battista Alberti, an Italian polymath, upended that understanding, countering that the world was, in fact, fundamentally geometrical. Other thinkers, from Copernicus to Galileo, followed. And, as Alexander argues, this sea change had profound implications: If the world was geometrical—not only rational, but also hierarchical and permanent—then that was the divinely ordained social order, too. Euclidean geometry, that is, was used to justify monarchy.

Brattleboro is a small town (about 12k people) in Vermont, one of the whitest states in the U.S. There are only about 5,000 Africans in the entire state, so there’s a good chance that a significant portion of the African population in the state consists of college students at Dartmouth and other educational institutions that need African students for affirmative action purposes.
I suspect that one does not travel to Vermont if one prefers living around black people. There was a time, of course, when there were a lot of black farmers — they were called ‘sharecroppers’ and they did not have enviable lives.

ZMan unpacks a fashionable political fetish.
There is a slow shift going on with the definition of racism. The first part of those common definitions now says something like “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race.” In other words, the moral codes that define racism now include an assertion of fact. That is, race does not exist. After all, to say that people have shared traits that define them as a people is what is considered the primary definition of racism. To be a racist is to acknowledge race.
Racism is well on its way to becoming a form of magic. The racist mind is now one that perceives things that are not real, like sub-Saharan Africans having dark skin. The epicanthic fold not only cannot exist, noticing it suggests the person seeing it is possessed by the demon of racism. There really is no other way to interpret the emerging definition of racism. In order to resolve the conflict between the definition and nature, they must introduce some supernatural element.

Crucially, 99.4 per cent cases identified as cancer were correctly spotted – meaning just 0.6 per cent of cases were misdiagnoses of healthy patients.

I am very familiar with transcripts of presidential phone calls since I edited and processed dozens of them when I worked for the NSC. I also know a lot about intelligence whistleblowers from my time with the CIA.
My suspicions grew this morning when I saw the declassified whistleblowing complaint. It appears to be written by a law professor and includes legal references and detailed footnotes. It also has an unusual legalistic reference on how this complaint should be classified.
From my experience, such an extremely polished whistleblowing complaint is unheard of. This document looks as if this leaker had outside help, possibly from congressional members or staff.

Environmentalists love their trains. Apparently, the cutting edge of 19th-century technology is the solution to our transportation problems. The City of Austin recently spent about $150 million on a commuter rail system. This expenditure has reduced traffic congestion approximately 0 percent. If you stand next to I-35 during rush hour, more people will pass you in one minute than ride the train all day. A while ago, I was stopped at a railroad crossing for one of these trains. When it went by, I could see that there were fewer people in the train than cars stopped for it. It was only for a short time, no longer than a long traffic light. Still, that means that a couple of dozen cars were idling so 20 people could ride the train. If you multiply that by every railroad crossing in the city, that means that more gas is being wasted and more CO2 being generated by the idling vehicles than if those twenty people had driven their cars.

Graham Piro at the Washington Free Beacon found a fascinating nugget in the waning minutes of an hourlong Monday segment of the NPR talk show 1A. They’re doing a series of climate segments under the heading “No Plan B.” Host Joshua Johnson was speaking about how many Democratic voters strongly — we might say creepily — hope to see their opponents die off, so the Left can get what they want. Dianna Muller, who served in the Tulsa Police Department for 22 years and is the founder of gun advocacy group The DC Project, was among the witnesses at the House Judiciary Committee hearing. The session on an otherwise contentious issue flew largely under the radar amid the Trump-Ukraine controversy and Democrats’ impeachment push. But reflecting the gun control divide in the country — amid a spate of deadly mass shootings that prompted renewed calls for strict laws — Muller said that such a ban would force lawful gun owners to either give up their arms or become criminals.

At first, no one claimed to know how 24 boulders lining sidewalks to crowd out homeless camps in a San Francisco neighborhood appeared recently, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
But now some residents say they collected $2,000 to buy and place the boulders to deter homeless people — whom they accuse of selling drugs, setting fires and starting fights — from setting up tents on the sidewalk, KGO reported.
“Since the rocks, it has helped,” said neighbor Ernesto Jerez, KTVU reported.
