ZMan is far from optimistic.
Way back in the before times, when terms like “multiculturalism” had not escaped the academy, it was assumed that science and math were immune from the politicization that was ongoing in fields like history. After all, history is about storytelling, while math is about getting the right answer. Surely the right answer fields would not succumb to the growing lunacy on the Left, with regards to race, sex and ethnicity. Yet, here we are in the current year and the Left has declared a fatwa against math.
It turns out that lunacy and intelligence are not opposites. Smart people, the sort you tend to find in science departments, can believe in crazy things. This probably should have been obvious to the men of science a long time ago, but scientists, like the lunatics now making war on them, have always had a narrow definition of religion and the supernatural. They fell into the trap of thinking the people spouting oogily-boogily about the gods were churchgoers, not their friends at the university.

While trying to receive holy communion at South Carolina’s St. Anthony Catholic Church, former Vice President and 2020 hopeful Joe Biden was denied by the church’s reverend, citing Biden’s support for abortion. The liberal media were once floored by Biden’s support for the Hyde Amendment but welcomed his buckle to political pressure and their radical demands. So, it’s no wonder ABC, CBS, and NBC ignored the religious rebuke of Biden

At an Obama Foundation event on Tuesday, former President Barack Obama made headlines by denouncing the purity test his party had set up for their 2020 presidential candidates and called on the left to end their so-called cancel culture, which aims to ruin people’s lives with false activism. But none of the liberal broadcast networks heeded his call and omitted it from their morning and evening newscasts on Wednesday.
Even the Magic Negro gets ignored when he wanders off of the reservation.

Officials who run former President Ronald Reagan’s library in California use goats to eat dried brush and grass around the building that often act as accelerates for the state’s ferocious wildfires.
Nearly 300 goats mauled their way through the dry grasses around the Simi Valley library, the Los Angeles Times noted in a report Wednesday. The report laid out the efforts firefighters are taking to prevent the so-called Easy Fire from torching the 40th U.S. president’s monument.

The Carolina Panthers’ speedy running back Christian McCaffrey, who is second in the NFL with 105 yards rushing per game, is bidding to become the first white player to lead the NFL in rushing since Jim Taylor of the legendary 1962 Green Bay Packers 57 years ago.
…
Despite McCaffrey’s fame, this year’s Madden videogame depicted him as black. After all, game-breaking NFL backs (McCaffrey has scored ten touchdowns in his first seven games) are virtually never white.

Hampshire was founded in 1970 to be a hippy college so it doesn’t have a big endowment nor beautiful buildings like older liberal arts colleges often do. Also, I’m guessing that Tiger Moms are allergic to it. Then came the Great Awokening, which as usual increased unhappiness at Hampshire by encouraging the least mentally stable students to act out.
Only 13 new students showed up at Hampshire this fall.

Father Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church confirmed Monday afternoon that he had denied the presidential candidate Holy Communion because of his stance on abortion. Biden, a lifelong Catholic, had attended the church’s 9 a.m. Mass.

The first name on the list for the U.S., The Dallas Morning News, ran editorials announcing its endorsement of Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Beto O’Rourke for Senate in 2018.

They probably don’t teach Kipling in public schools nowadays, and progressive Democrats like Ms. Hill would almost certainly condemn the great British poet as a racist and imperialist. Nevertheless, the common-sense verities once taught to every grammar school student remain as relevant as today’s headlines. When we forget those ancient lessons, bad things happen, and we have only ourselves to blame.
Sometimes the old ways are best.

Researchers think they have, for the first time, discovered the ‘cradle of humanity’ where the first modern humans evolved before spreading across the globe.
They are believed to have flourished in the prehistoric Makgadikgadi–Okavango wetland, just to the south of the Zambezi River.
A study of DNA records and migration patterns has proven, scientists say, that the genetic root of all modern humans comes from that region 200,000 years ago.

A social justice activist at Cornell University was kicked out of the school’s Alliance for Science fellowship and is now calling the school “racist,” despite complaints from other non-white fellows regarding the student’s behavior.
The student, Julia Feliz, uses the pronouns “they” and “them,” and, according to other students in the program, would constantly tie every classroom issue to social justice issues. This took time away from science, and frustrated other fellows.

People in many of the world’s most advanced nations — including the United States, the euro area and Japan — are holding more of it than ever.
In the U.S., for example, currency in circulation stood at an estimated $1.76 trillion as of late September, according to the Federal Reserve. That’s about 8.2% of gross domestic product, up from just 5.6% before the 2008 financial crisis and close to the highest level in at least 36 years.?
If people need less cash to pay for stuff, why do they want to hold so much of it? The answer, it seems, is that they’re turning to currency as a store of value.
Of course, the $100 bill is also the most frequently counterfeited. Just sayin’.

There are about 5,000 members of the U.S. military, mostly airmen, stationed at the huge, strategically located air base in Incirlik, Turkey, northwest of the Syrian border.
The American forces at Incirlik are also the custodians of about 50 B61 nuclear bombs. Data on these weapons is classified, but at their maximum yield each is ten times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, according to Stars and Stripes.
It’s a “Dr. Strangelove” scenario: No one quite knows how the American contingent could manage to secretly remove the deadly nukes from their concrete vaults, bring them out to the tarmac, load them on planes and fly them out safely over Turkish objections.

When the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman missed a planned deployment last month after suffering major electrical problems, the only East Coast-based carrier currently capable of deploying was forced to head back to the dock.
As the Navy scrambles to get the Truman out to sea, it is pulling material and work crews from two other carriers undergoing their own long-planned refit and repair availabilities, though Navy officials say they don’t expect the Truman’s problems to affect those other repair efforts. As it sits pier-side in Norfolk, the Truman has plenty of company, joining an already crowded Norfolk waterfront where six of the Navy’s 11 carriers are currently tied up. At the time we’re going to print that means not one of the six carriers based in Norfolk are ready to be deployed.

Fantasy worlds are defined by limits: much is unknown in these worlds, and the unknown either resists being known, or it is left in peace. These are fabled lands that no one has visited and lost empires known only through inscrutable ruins. Withholding an America-like landmass seems to be part of that. We live in an age of information overload and complete transparency, and fantasy worlds offer the succor of not knowing. Or of knowing only at great effort and consequence. One thing that is true for so many fantasy continents I’ve looked at: you can’t circumnavigate them. It isn’t all there for you to gawk at, for you to possess it whole. You are never a tourist in them. Exploring one part of a world commits you to never being able to explore others. The part that you choose defines you as a particular kind of person.
The Campaign Cartographer people have a tool called Fractal Terrains which will allow you to create an infinite number of imaginary worlds with the press of a button. Unfortunately, their tools only work on Windows — an understandable constraint considering that they’re out to make money, but a disappointment nevertheless.

More Nigerian leader are admitting the obvious; that Boko Haram violence continues because so many federal officials, military commanders and northern politicians cripple the counter-terrorism effort with corrupt practices. Too many Nigerian see the expensive effort to defeat Boko Haram as an opportunity to make (steal) money. The corruption up these is no secret and there have already been several newsworthy incidents where corruption was revealed or troops openly protested the dishonesty and incompetence of their leaders. Then there was the embarrassing situation of American aid being sought and the U.S. refusing to send any equipment because, based on past performance, it would soon become inoperable, or just disappear, because of the chronic corruption. Generals and politicians tried to depict that as a deliberate insult to Nigeria but most Nigerians agreed with the Americans.
