The Democrats have once again taken a word that is a treasured symbol for our country–Democracy–and has tried to desecrate it by assigning blame to Republicans for imperiling it. The irony is that they apparently don’t know what a Democracy actually is, having chosen to mis-define it, celebrate Marxism, and use their new definition to incriminate Republicans. I thought I could help them out by clarifying the characteristics of a Democracy, and we can all reflect on who is doing the most damage to our country.

People cry at airports all the time. So when Jai Cooper heard sobbing from the back of the security line, it didn’t really faze her. As an officer of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), she had gotten used to the strange behavior of passengers. Her job was to check people’s travel documents, not their emotional well-being.
But this particular group of tearful passengers presented her with a problem. One of them was in a wheelchair, bent over with her head between her knees, completely unresponsive. “Is she okay? Can she sit up?” Cooper asked, taking their boarding passes and IDs to check. “I need to see her face to identify her.”
“She can’t, she can’t, she can’t,” said the passenger who was pushing the wheelchair.
Soon, Cooper was joined at her station by a supervisor, followed by an assortment of EMTs and airport police officers. The passenger was dead. She and her family had arrived several hours prior, per the airport’s guidance for international flights, but she died sometime after check-in. Since they had her boarding pass in hand, the distraught family figured that they would still try to get her on the flight. Better that than leave her in a foreign country’s medical system, they figured.

The Washington Post is one of America’s most revered news organizations. Once led by Katharine Graham, an era-defining media CEO, and edited by news legend Ben Bradlee, the Post is famous for the Watergate-era journalism of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, which made it the nation’s political paper of record.
Today, one of the Post’s most high-profile employees is an internet-culture reporter named Taylor Lorenz. Her involvement in numerous scandals involving reporting errors, frequent falsehoods, violations of journalistic norms and troubling online interactions call into question whether outlets like the Post can continue to function effectively as the Fourth Estate in the age of online clout-chasing and click-based news.
A former social-media manager and marketer, Lorenz is credited with carving out a new kind of internet-focused journalism that made social media culture a topic for serious coverage. Upon hiring her earlier this year, the Post called Lorenz the “country’s premier chronicler of internet culture.” But Lorenz, who declined to be interviewed for this article, has also become a lightning rod whose Wikipedia “controversies” section is as long as the rest of the entry.

This week, President Joe Biden—in search of a new label to pin on his political opponents after the failure of his “ultra-MAGA” branding, which prompted peals of laughter rather than shudders of horror—landed on a new slur with which to tar those who don’t support his agenda: they are, he said, semi-fascists.
Speaking with a crowd of Democratic donors in Maryland, Biden reportedly said, “What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy. It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the—I’m going to say something—it’s semi-fascism.”
Now, Democratic politicians painting half of Americans as beneath contempt is old hat. Former President Barack Obama, of course, said that Americans who didn’t support him in 2008 were merely bitter bigots, clinging to “guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them.” Hillary Clinton was more pithy: she called them a “basket of deplorables.” So, “semi-fascist” shouldn’t come as much of a shock.

Another left-wing attempt to rewrite election rules has gone down in flames. This time, liberals attempted to put a measure on the November ballot to gut election safeguards and skew voting rules in the influential swing state.
But if the left thought they could buy their way onto the ballot, they were wrong. In their rush to “save democracy,” the group pushing the measure — euphemistically named “Arizonans for Free and Fair Elections”— failed to follow state law.

The Mexican passport holders were flagged as part of a probe into passport fraud, and each identified individual will be further evaluated, the Free Beacon reported.
A senior DHS official told the outlet that the agency likely will investigate whether any of the individuals traveled to the U.S., and whether there are patterns in their travel.
“This investigation highlights that criminals often use legal travel to facilitate criminal activity,” the official told the Free Beacon. “The nexus to Mexico should cause the public and lawmakers to reflect on how a porous border can be even more dangerous.”

A recent magazine section in the Sunday New York Times breathlessly announced the “untold story of Jones Day’s push to move American government and courts to the right.” Jones Day is a powerful and well-respected law firm. The author of this exposé is an investigative reporter, David Enrich, who draws this excerpt from his new book, Servants of the Damned: Giant Law Firms, Donald Trump, and the Corruption of Justice, whose lurid title all too well sums up his grandiose thesis. Enrich is not a lawyer, nor does he argue like one. Instead, his modus operandi is to merely assume that Donald Trump, any of his associates, and indeed any conservative cause deserve intense public condemnation.
Enrich wants to delegitimize Jones Day by turning the firm into an arch-villain. He hopes first to make Trump persona non grata, so that large corporate law firms will rid themselves of Trump loyalists and dissociate themselves from any conservative causes. In going after Jones Day, Enrich lurches into dangerous territory by branding it ethically improper, if not downright immoral, for individuals to defend causes with which Enrich disagrees. His ultimate objective is to neutralize conservative law firms, a goal toward which at least one giant law firm appears already to have moved. (Kirkland & Ellis parted ways with two of its most distinguished lawyers—Paul Clement and Erin Murphy—because of their successful and sound defense of gun rights in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen (2022).) It would be equally wrong to mount this kind of crusade against any left-wing firm that decided to defend any of President Joe Biden’s initiatives on immigration, student loans, foreign affairs, or climate change. On both sides, it is far better to argue a case on the merits than to cast aspersions on the people and causes with which you disagree.

An enduring question on this side of the great divide is over the motivation of the Cloud People as they go about their war on the Dirt People. Is there some grand plan behind the war or is it some weird instinctual thing? Are they motivated by base instincts like money and power or is it something spiritual? There is the “deep state versus emergent behavior” angle but also the simple question about whether these people have the self-awareness to grasp what they are doing at all.
For example, the war on Russia was launched six months ago and at the time it was clear to most people that the cost to the West would be high. The question was about the cost to the Russians. Given the dismal history of economic sanctions and the public utterances of Russian leaders, sober minded people saw the sanctions regime as a high risk and extremely low reward gamble. That quickly became an all risk and no reward strategy that was doomed to fail.
Despite the obviousness of it all, the West kept doubling down on the program as if they were on the right side of history. Now people are getting gas bills in Europe that are five and ten times normal. Europeans are posting their utility bills on-line as a desperate effort to get attention to the issue. For reasons no one has bothered to explain, Western media is not treating this as an important story. They are not grilling Western leaders on the situation or even asking them questions.
In fact, European nations have asked the U.S. to step up to the plate and produce more oil and gas to help them out, and the Secretary of Energy is too busy pushing electric cars to help out our allies.

The self-appointed “fact checkers” generally fall silent when a Democrat tells a whopper. We are seeing a lot of that in Minnesota these days, with incumbent Governor Tim Walz locked in a tight race with Dr. Scott Jensen. Walz didn’t have a lot of composure to start with–he is an angry, intemperate man–and whatever composure he had seems to be crumbling under pressure. The result is frequent departures from the truth.
On Sunday, Walz was interviewed at the State Fair by a liberal reporter from WCCO television. He unleashed a couple of epic lies. First, he claimed that there had hardly been any school shutdown in Minnesota: “Just to be clear, over 80% of our students missed less than 10 days of in-class learning.”
This assertion is inexplicable. Gov. Walz shut down the entire school system on March 15, 2020. His administration then put in place a complicated matrix using county health data and school district boundaries for schools to reopen in the fall of 2020. Most public schools did not return to in-class learning until the spring of 2021. “Less than 10 days”? That is not true of any public school student in the state. For most, it was a year.

The last few decades have seen the emergence of two rival economies: an older analog one built on the actual production of goods, and another that profits from financial transactions, images and customer surveillance. The contest between the two has been rather one-sided, with the “laptop economy” the big winner, particularly during the pandemic.
But while lockdowns made this one-sidedness clear, recent developments have been an unwelcome reminder that the pain suffered in the analog economy still matters. Whether through inflation, energy shortages or supply chain issues, we are getting an uncomfortable lesson in the enduring relevance of the material world.

Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, should be subject to an Article 32 Hearing under the provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for his conduct and statements as memorialized in the Bob Woodward book “Peril,” and the Aug. 8, 2022, New Yorker magazine excerpt of a forthcoming book by Susan B. Glasser and Peter Baker.
…
Gen. Milley called his communist Chinese military counterpart in October 2020 and January 2021 with unauthorized promises and assurances of advanced warnings of U.S. military intentions and actions. America learned of these contacts through the book “Peril,” authored by Mr. Woodward and Robert Costa. In the book, Gen. Milley is quoted as saying, “General Li, I want to assure you that the American government is stable and everything is going to be OK. We are not going to attack or conduct any kinetic operations against you.” And then, reportedly, Gen. Milley said this: “General Li, you and I have known each other for five years. If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise.”
Gen. Milley admitted to making the calls. A spokesman for Gen. Milley stated that Gen. Milley acted within his authority as the senior military adviser to the president and the secretary of defense, yet Gen. Milley failed to consult any civilian authority, a fact confirmed by Christopher Miller, the former acting secretary of defense, and by former President Donald Trump.

This reality has been unfolding for a generation. Asian and European nations have long prioritized their export industries, helping them gain dominance in many markets, from steel and cars to semiconductors. By contrast, big American capital, bolstered by cheerleaders in the corporate media, sacrificed our nation’s communities and the personal aspirations of countless workers for the sake of greater profits.
Munger cites imported semiconductors, smartphones, and other American-branded tech as big wins for our economy. This may be true for the investors who own piles of big tech stock. The technology is also cool for consumers, if sometimes very pricey. But what did this system produce for the overall U.S. economy and the health of its workforce? Google, Microsoft, and the other oligarchic firms make virtually nothing here. Apple may be “headquartered” in Cupertino, but more than 90 percent of iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks are made in China, albeit “designed in California.” Despite their endless virtue-signaling, these corporations are indifferent to the national economy. Instead, many have become China’s ultimate cheerleaders and enablers, with venture capital firms raising billions to fund new firms in the Middle Kingdom—in other words, subsidizing the competition.
The current position of Europe due to the Russia sanctions demonstrates the problems that can arise from dependencies based on the assumption that free trade is free and will always be available. There needs to be more thought and discussion about this.

The current American ruling class is obsessed with the exact correct use of language. You can’t say China-virus and you need to know the exact pronouns towards whatever gender construct was made yesterday.
Then Trump comes along with his big New York accent; his funny hair; his golden yuge-sized ego; and his genuine love for the lifestyles and values of middle America. He is like a Crab clan Samurai with a funny northern accent talking about making money and drinking low-class tea with the peasants. (The crab clan are slightly larger members of Rokugan who are known for being uncouth but practical. They also love building large things to protect the borders of Rokugan.)
Above all, it is Trump’s unpleasantness of speech that so infuriates the NTers. Rob Long, Jonah Goldberg, JPod, David French, Sam Harris, Steve Pinker, William F. Buckley the younger, Charles Cook, and Kevin D. Williamson all make money from how good they are at words. I like most of what they write, heck I even quoted an article from Kevin D. Williamson a few paragraphs ago.
As for the political elites, the John McCain, Liz Cheney, and Bill Kristol types. Trump is simply an outsider who doesn’t have the right to rule. This makes his unpleasant language all the worse. Trump will never read as much as Victor Davis Hanson and he will never write with VDH’s clear and compelling prose so VDH doesn’t need to feel threatened. However, political and media mediocrities have every right to feel threatened.
Think of what propelled him to popularity. He spoke about trade imbalances, the poverty and hopelessness of the rust-belt, and illegal immigration. What all these positions had in common was that they were favored by the elite and talking about them was taboo. Trump promoted the opposite positions of the elite and defended them in a rude way.
If you don’t believe me, look at how the MSM treated George Dubya vs. Barack Obama. Obama often didn’t say anything of importance but he looked good and he said the pretty words that make you a good person. He was popular in the Noble Court. The policies on the little people outside L.A., New York, D.C., and all the other elite enclaves didn’t matter all that much. They are just little people after all, practically peasants.

As the Biden administration continues its attempts to consolidate power within the federal government and among its leftist allies, there’s a familiar face being tapped to lead Biden’s effort to surge power, resources, and agents to the IRS — and she has quite the track record of working to target conservative groups and organizations.
One of Lois Lerner’s lackeys from the Obama-era IRS scandal — one that saw the agency target conservative and tea party affiliated groups as a political arm of the Obama-Biden administration — will be leading the Biden administration’s expansion of the IRS and stated goal of hiring 87,000 new agents.
Nikole Flax, who most recently served as the deputy commissioner in charge of the IRS’ Large Business & International Division, has been with the IRS since 2008. According to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, Flax will be leading “the creation of a new, centralized office for implementation of all IRS-related provisions” outlined in the boondoggle falsely named the “Inflation Reduction Act.” There’s little Democrats love more than a chance to work on “centralized” anything within the federal government.

In her official capacity, Michigan Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer has acknowledged that she hasn’t actually created 25,000 auto jobs since taking office. Her reelection campaign apparently didn’t get the memo.
Whitmer’s campaign site says the Democrat “created nearly 25,000 auto jobs as part of the biggest manufacturing boom in years.” But even Whitmer’s official office has conceded that the claim isn’t true. After a Washington Free Beacon report showed that Michigan has actually lost auto jobs on the Democrat’s watch, Whitmer amended an official state government fact sheet to remove a section that touted “creating nearly 25,000 good-paying auto jobs.” Whitmer’s official Twitter account also deleted a June 30 tweet that included the false claim, and in an Aug. 1 press release, the governor noted that the 25,000 figure stems from “projected” jobs that have been “announced” but not actualized.

WebMD—and its imitators—are terrible. Often the first stop for health questions, WebMD bombards you with vague, unhelpful articles strewn with garish pharmaceutical ads—an ocean of “content” without substance.
And I’m not just some crank with an ax to grind—satisfaction with online health information is incredibly low, around 38%. What’s more, this satisfaction has been very stable over time—one study found that users in 2008 were just as unhappy with health information as they were in 2017!
Rightly done, a medical information site would concentrate on being up-to-date with all the latest research–a place where doctors themselves would go to find out the latest and greatest.
Do you think many doctors consult WebMD (or any of it many imitators)?

Like much of the internet, the purpose of WebMD (and its many imitators) is not to provide a service–after all, it’s free; where’s the money in that?–but to monetize provided content. Nothing is more common than a web article about some otherwise-unimpressive-person who makes GAZILLIONS OF DOLLARS A MONTH OF PASSIVE INCOME, and when you look into it you find out that the way to wealth and fame on the internet is … monetized provided content.
Not providing a service–there’s no money in that; people expect the internet to be free, so if you charge for what you do, you’re left sitting in cyberspace whistling to yourself. This is why newspapers are so lame these days.

A woman from the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland converted to Islam and became a mujahidette because she wanted to prove that a woman can be just as good as a man at slaughtering infidels. Now she’s on trial for stabbing two people in Lugano.

Surveys over the past couple years show that at least 45% of college graduates are unable to find a job once they enter the private sector. Those that can find a job usually end up working outside the scope of their field of study. Keep in mind this is happening during a period of very low official unemployment.
The result? Four year or eight year degree holders end up working side-by-side with high school graduates in lower wage jobs. This is extremely common and is fueling a rise in worker discontent. Their fantasies of six-figure incomes and a life of prestige suddenly hit a wall called reality, and now these students are angry and in debt to the tune of $36,000 or more on average.

The Taliban’s Deputy Interior Minister Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali told reporters Sunday that “martyrdom brigades,” or suicide bomber units, are a part of the Taliban’s security forces and a source of “pride.”
At a press conference for the Ministry of Interior’s annual report, the Taliban official reportedly said that “the martyrdom brigades are an integral part of our Jihad and our source of pride, their small or large number is confidential, which we do not see it necessary to explain.”
According to Khaama Press, Afghan military and security forces have never before included suicide bomber units.

Heavy clashes erupted in Baghdad, killing almost 20 people on Monday, after powerful Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said he would quit politics, prompting his loyalists to storm a government palace and fight with rival groups.
As night fell, machine-gun fire and explosions rang out, with tracer fire rising into the sky above the Green Zone that houses government headquarters and foreign embassies, in the worst fighting the Iraqi capital has seen in years.
