A Spanish Supreme Court ruling restricting the immediate return of migrants arriving by sea has been blamed for an influx that has overwhelmed the reception system in Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 migrants, mainly from Morocco, reached Ceuta by sea over a period of nine or ten days, according to the city’s Mayor-President, Juan Jesús Vivas.

“In the last few days, more than 1,500 migrants, including adults and minors, have reached Ceuta by sea,” Vivas told journalists.

“The reception centers have collapsed and are over-saturated,” he said. Ceuta’s temporary migrant reception centre, which has 512 official places, was housing nearly 600 people, while more than 400 others waited outside.

“We are in a very serious situation. We are in a very difficult situation,” Vivas added, warning of conditions like those in May 2021, when around 8,000 illegal migrants stormed and entered Ceuta in just two days, equal to around 10% of the local population.

Footage circulating on the internet shows how easy it is to enter the exclave by sea, as migrants only need to swim around a short pier to bypass the fence that marks the Spanish-Moroccan border.

And this will continue to happen as long as Spain doesn’t get rid of them as soon as possible.

A think-tank has warned that British police forces are being hampered by an obsessive focus on diversity, equality and inclusion, with the ideology of “anti-racism” now set against the foundational duty to police without fear or favour.

Germany’s federal government just dropped numbers that should end every soft-border talking point still circulating in European capitals.

Of the 1,087 suspects identified in 751 recorded gang rapes last year, 53 percent were foreign nationals.

In November, California voters will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition 39. The measure, officially the Voter Identification, Citizenship Verification, and Registered Voter List Administration Initiative, would require Californians to show identification when they vote and force state officials to clean up the voter rolls and verify that the people on them are eligible citizens.

All signs suggest it will pass. A poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found in May that 71% of Californians support requiring proof of citizenship for first-time voter registration, and 54% want it required before every election. However, Attorney General Rob Bonta is trying to make sure it doesn’t pass.

His latest move came on July 21, just months before the November election, when Bonta rewrote the official ballot title for Prop 39, replacing the language he himself approved last year with a new title that proponents say is engineered to make voters reject it.

Ruiz, who had reportedly been released from prison (read report) shortly before the incident, was approached by police while riding a bicycle after allegedly attempting to enter several vehicles. Far-left activists have since designated the occupied area the Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone, or CRAZ.

The encampment appears designed to demonstrate control over public space while creating conditions in which any police intervention could be framed as state repression. However, reporting from local media and anti-communist commentator Karlyn Borysenko suggests the local government is accommodating, and potentially enabling, the occupation rather than moving to dismantle it.

A criminal investigation into UK Green Party leader Zack Polanski was dropped by London’s Metropolitan Police on Wednesday, July 29th, sparking another row over ‘two-tier policing.’

The row began when 20 images were shared on one of eco-zealot Polanski’s official social media accounts. One featured a photo of a Bristol activist wearing a T-shirt depicting a guillotine and the words “We’re only making plans for Nigel.” Reform UK leader Nigel Farage reported the post to police, arguing that it amounted to incitement.

Farage has recently drawn attention to the large number of death threats he receives, particularly since the killing of his colleague Ann Widdecombe. There may be a free speech argument for allowing the image to be shared—even with Polanski’s 713,000 Instagram followers—but Reform officials are understandably nervous. On Wednesday, Farage said that Polanski, as a political leader with a large following,

cannot put out on his social media the image that he did, my name, the guillotine, without some consequences.

The McKinney Islamic Association is facing continued scrutiny after the McKinney City Council announced it will be holding a final vote on a proposed mosque and Islamic center.

Last week, it was revealed that McKinney’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted 7-0 to recommend approval of the association’s plan to build a new mosque and community campus off Virginia Parkway near two residential neighborhoods. The council is scheduled to approve or deny the project at its Aug. 4 meeting.

Ammon Blair, senior fellow for the Secure & Sovereign Nation initiative at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, told the Daily Signal that Texas needs to “demand complete transparency regarding MIA’s funding, foreign contributions, institutional affiliations, tribunal activities, use of campus facilities, dispute-resolution practices, and protections against coercion.”

“Texas must enforce one constitutional order, one civil sovereign, and one controlling rule of law,” he said. “No religious, ideological, political, or foreign-linked organization stands above that standard.”

Advocates for voter ID in California have sued the state over altered ballot language for the November initiative.

The ballot initiative Proposition 39, which would amend the state constitution to require that voters provide government-issued identification to vote, originally included the description, “Establishes additional voter identification and citizenship verification requirements.”

However, last week, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, changed the language to say: “Prohibits citizens from voting unless they present government-issued identification.”

Plaintiffs supporting the passage of Proposition 39 say it would not “prohibit” any votes. Under federal law—the Help America Vote Act—voters can cast provisional ballots if there is a question about their eligibility.

Further, supporters of the ballot initiative contend that state law requires state officials to “give a true and impartial statement of the purpose of the measure” in developing ballot language, KCRA Channel 3 Sacramento reported. The lawsuit calls the state’s updated description “not a true and impartial statement of the measure’s purpose.”

Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division headed to duty on the U.S.-Mexico border will be among the first to live in new 3D-printed barracks unveiled this week at an Army base in Texas.

Two new 3D-printed barracks buildings at Fort Bliss, Texas, which opened on Tuesday, are built for transient soldiers who are not permanently assigned to the base, Army officials said in a release. The service signed a $62.8 million contract with construction company ICON to build 10 barracks that can hold 560 troops.

Army officials said some of the first residents will include soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division’s 1st Mobile Brigade “Bastogne” unit from Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Their deployment to the southern border was announced in June.

Christiane Amanpour, the eponymous host of PBS’s Amanpour & Company, welcomed author and activist Bill McKibben to Tuesday’s show to partake in the latest doom-and-gloom prognostications on the environment. According to McKibben, climate change is mostly former President Ronald Reagan’s fault and any additional blame should be directed at President Trump for engaging in “economic-self sabotage.”

Towards the end of their discussion, Amanpour invited McKibben to “Tell me your story about President Carter back in the ’70s. There was the oil crisis there, and he did all sorts of things, including putting solar panels on the roof of the White House. What did he tell people back then? Tell the American people?”

McKibben mourned, “What he told people was that the sun was, in fact, the future. And in his last budget, he put aside another R&D money that the plan was for America to be producing 20 percent of its power from the sun by the year 2000. Had we done that, we would live in a very different world today, a much cooler one, because this renewable revolution would have been pushed forward several decades.”

Lamenting Reagan’s election, McKibben continued, “Instead, of course, Ronald Reagan was elected over Mr. Carter, and he took down those solar panels from the White House roof. More importantly, he took that money out of the budget and locked us into this cycle of endless drilling for more oil that’s come to define not only America’s economy, but America’s politics.”

On July 15th, Mario Roggero, a jeweller from Piedmont charged with fatally shooting two of the three robbers who had just raided his shop in 2021, received a final sentence of fourteen years and nine months in prison. This protracted legal battle has opened up a new political front in Italy and reignited a heated debate: to what extent does a citizen have the right to defend themselves when the state is no longer able to protect them?

With a new election cycle just a few months away, the case has become a powerful symbol for the Italian Right, which sees it as an illustration of a justice system more concerned with the rights of offenders than with those of victims. Conversely, the judiciary and the Left are defending the ruling as essential to upholding the rule of law, refusing to equate self-defence with a right to revenge.

The events date back to 28 April 2021. Three armed men entered Mario Roggero’s jewellery shop in Grinzane Cavour, Piedmont. The shopkeeper, his wife, and his daughter were threatened during the robbery. When the criminals fled, Roggero grabbed his legally owned gun, chased them down the street and fired several shots at their vehicle. Two robbers were killed; the third was seriously injured.

Sweden’s left-wing parties are running Arabic-language advertisements aimed at immigrant voters ahead of this year’s elections, repeating a strategy used during the 2022 campaign.

The advertisements have appeared on Al Kompis, an Arabic-language website aimed at immigrants in Sweden who cannot speak Swedish. Political parties and public authorities have previously used the platform to reach the country’s Arabic-speaking population.

Among those advertising during the current campaign are the Social Democrats and the Centre Party.

An advertisement featuring Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson promises greater investment in healthcare and schools. It links to a dedicated campaign page claiming that the party’s economic policies would leave “ordinary people” with more money.

The party also promises support for workers, families and pensioners struggling with rising electricity, fuel, food and borrowing costs.

The Centre Party’s advertisements focus on fighting racism and discrimination. One features MEP Abir Al-Sahlani, who says she is “equally skilled at cooking Iraqi and Swedish dishes.”

On the party’s campaign page, Al-Sahlani says she wants Sweden to have “a balanced immigration policy that upholds human rights.”

When you add it all up, 150 of this year’s congressional races featured no meaningful competition, according to a new report from Unite America, a nonprofit advocating for election reforms.

“These 150 candidates, mostly incumbents, ran unopposed in the dominant party primary for districts that the Cook Political Report rates as uncompetitive in the general election,” the report explains. “In other words, we already know not only which party is all but guaranteed to win these seats in November, but which person will win.”

This is an underappreciated problem plaguing American democracy—and one that contributes to other, more visible problems, like gerontocracy and Congress’ general flaccidity in the face of executive overreach. In those 150 districts where there are no competitive elections this year, over 84 million Americans have been effectively disenfranchised. Those voters can’t make a different choice, no matter how badly they might want one.

They could move. Nobody has nailed their feet to the ground. People who “can’t make a different choice” in California and New York have been moving to Texas and Florida for quite a while now. People in ‘competitive’ districts who lose the election can “make a different choice” all they want to, but their views still aren’t represented by the winning party’s candidate. How does this improve their lives? This is not rocket science.

I am constantly scratching my head about this fetish certain people have for ‘competitive districts’ for Congress. On the part of ‘journalists’ I can understand it, because political sturm und drang pays their bills, but for people who in theory actually follow (and allegedly think about) politics don’t have that excuse. The cure for ’84 million Americans have been effectively dis[en]franchise’ is to increase the percentage of the minority so that when the election is over even more people are ‘dis[en]franchised‘? How does that make any sense?

THE PURPOSE OF CONGRESS IS REPRESENTATION. The more ‘uncompetitive’ a district is, the more accurately the resulting winner will represent the existing inhabitants of that district. A district that is 95% Democrat or 95% Republican will represent the viewpoint of the overwhelming majority of the people. If the district becomes ‘competitive’, meaning it drops to, say, 55% of one party and 45% of the other, THAT INCREASES THE PERCENTATE OF PEOPLE IN THE DISTRICT WHO, WHEN THEY LOSE THE ELECTION, ARE ‘DIS[en]FRANCHISED’ (in the sense that their ‘representative’ represents the viewpoint of the other side).

The best representation is when 100% of the people in a district favor one party; the only questions that arise in an election are internal differences within the broad range of what that party stands for. That’s democracy pure and simple.

Locals lined up outside a Toronto bagel shop on Monday in a show of support after attacks on two outposts of the Jewish-owned chain, adding to a string of incidents facing Jewish businesses in the city.

Two locations of Kiva’s Bagel Bar, a fixture for Toronto Jews since it opened in 1979, were targeted late Saturday and early Sunday. Gunfire hit the windows of one storefront just an hour after another storefront was vandalized and its front glass shattered, according to the Toronto Police Service.

Police said their Hate Crime Unit was investigating, and they believed the same SUV may have been involved at both scenes. The bakeries were closed at the time and no injuries were reported.

New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker tweeted on X on Saturday that it is time for the White House Correspondents’ Association to “rethink” its annual dinner with the president, after the event with President Donald Trump did not “advance” the cause of reporting “without fear or favor.” As if that motto isn’t ridiculous at this point?

“Have been a member of the WHCA almost continuously since the 1990s. Our mission is to defend the First Amendment rights of White House correspondents to report on the president without fear or favor. Unfortunately last night did advance that cause,” Baker posted. “Time to rethink the dinner.”
