Her parents fled Laos in 1976. Her father lied on the immigration forms to “skip a step” so they could get into the U.S. faster. She then automatically got U.S. citizenship when her parents became citizens.
Even after the controversy, Kaohly was elected the mayor of St. Paul in November 2025, because of course.
Fast-forward to July 2026, and the police chief has filed a criminal complaint against Mayor Her, alleging that she sent inappropriate messages to city employees.
