California Is America’s Banana Republic

11th June 2026

Read it.

Well, Banana People’s Republic.

Historically, a “banana republic” is a derisive term for small, unstable nations in Latin America dominated by a corrupt ruling clique. These regimes maintained power through manipulated elections, suppression of opposition, crony capitalism, and the systematic looting of public resources, all while projecting a thin veneer of democratic legitimacy. The people suffered in poverty while the elite lived in ostentatious luxury.

Tragically, that archetype no longer belongs solely to distant tropics. It now describes California—the wealthiest subnational economy on the planet and America’s clearest example of institutional decay.

California’s gross domestic product exceeds that of all but a handful of sovereign countries. The state is the birthplace of transformative technologies and the global capital of entertainment. Yet beneath the glossy surface of Silicon Valley valuations and Hollywood glamour lies a political order that has grown increasingly authoritarian, opaque, and self-serving.

The state is no longer governed by competing visions of the public good. It is controlled by a single party that has captured every lever of institutional power.

The Irish, Scots and English Are at the End of the “First Follower” Phase in Cultural Survival

When the systems of a ‘law and order’ society find no intention, benefit or reasonable expectation of safety from their established construct of government -generally driven by an intentional willingness to ignore the demands of the citizens those officials are expected to represent- eventually people take matters into their own hands.

It is fair to call this the end of the “first follower” phase.

Four Afghans on Trial Over Alleged Bristol Gang Rape

11th June 2026

Read it.

Four Afghan nationals, including a 16-year-old boy, are on trial in Britain accused of repeatedly raping a 17-year-old girl over several hours after allegedly grooming her online and transporting her to Bristol in late November 2025.

Mehrab Safi, 21, Awal Ahmadzai, 19, and Salman Habibkheil, 19, along with the juvenile, allegedly groomed the victim after Safi approached her in Bristol’s Cabot Circus. Court proceedings at Bristol Crown Court heard that Safi added the girl on Snapchat and requested nude photos before organising a taxi to bring her from Somerset to Bristol in the early hours.

Once there, she was allegedly taken to a property in the St. Werburghs area, plied with vodka and cigarettes, and allegedly raped by all four defendants. Prosecutor Ed Hetherington told the court the girl was isolated, alone in an unfamiliar city at night, and subjected to repeated sexual abuse against her will over several hours. The alleged assault came to an end after the girl’s mother alerted police.

Three of the adult suspects fled the scene as officers arrived, travelling to London and Birmingham before crossing to France hidden in a lorry. French police detained them in Calais on 3 December 2025; they reportedly gave false names before being returned to the UK. Safi faces two rape charges and one of human trafficking. Habibkheil denies human trafficking and rape. Ahmadzai denies rape and assault by penetration. The 16-year-old denies rape. The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.

Why AI Hasn’t Replaced Software Engineers, and Won’t

11th June 2026

Read it.

There is great anxiety and uncertainty about AI replacing jobs. How can we move past vague warnings and bombastic predictions and bring data to bear on this question? One good way is to look at the profession where AI capabilities are furthest along and adoption has been exceptionally rapid: software engineering.

In this essay, we argue that there is enough evidence to reject the narrative that once AI capabilities reach a certain threshold, it will cause mass layoffs. Given that this is true even in a sector with very few regulatory barriers, most other professions are likely to be even more cushioned.

We also have a good understanding of why this is the case. We can think of many kinds of knowledge work, including software development, as a “decide-execute-deliver sandwich”. AI compresses the “execute” layer — the middle of the sandwich — but the other two layers resist automation in a way that will not be overcome by capability improvements alone.

We conclude on a note of cautious optimism about the future trajectory of demand for software engineering. This essay is the first in a series, and the next one will look at reasons why individual software engineers’ careers might be rocky even if overall demand is healthy. The series is based on the published literature in economics and software engineering, our own evaluations and observations of AI agents, and many software engineers’ reflection on the present and future of AI impacts on their profession, gleaned both from published writings and our interactions with the community.

The Market Behind the Wall

11th June 2026

Cringely says the quiet part out loud.

There’s a reason your bank’s AI will tell you its branch hours but not your account balance. A reason the hospital lets it summarize the cafeteria menu and not the medical chart. A reason no airline will put a language model near a cockpit and no law firm lets one file a brief without a terrified associate reading every line. It isn’t the cost. It’s that the thing lies — confidently, fluently, without warning, and without any tell. In a chatbot recommending a taco place, a hallucination is a shrug. In a domain where being wrong gets someone audited, sued, sick, or killed, a hallucination is a wall. And behind that wall sit the most valuable AI markets on Earth — banking, insurance, medicine, law, aviation, defense — frozen, spending fortunes on pilot projects that might never ship, because the last mile is always a liability lawyer saying no.

Homes Burned as Belfast Erupts After Knife Attack

10th June 2026

Read it.

Violence erupted across Northern Ireland on Tuesday night after a Sudanese asylum seeker was charged with attempted murder following a brutal knife attack in north Belfast that sparked widespread public outrage.

The 30-year-old suspect, who is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court, was also charged with possessing a bladed article in a public place and making threats to kill. The victim, a local man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries to his face, neck, and back and remains in hospital.

The case attracted national attention after footage circulated online appearing to show the attacker repeatedly striking the victim while he was on the ground. Police later confirmed that the suspect had arrived in Ireland in 2023 before travelling to Northern Ireland, where he claimed asylum and was subsequently granted leave to remain in the United Kingdom until 2028.

The revelation reignited debate over Britain’s asylum system and border controls, particularly the so-called “Irish route,” under which migrants can enter the Republic of Ireland and later travel into Northern Ireland without routine border checks.

Professors Behind California’s Wealth Tax Threaten Possible Legal Action Against Critic

9th June 2026

Read it.

There is an interesting controversy brewing in California after four California university professors threatened a political candidate, Richard Lucas, for criticizing them for their roles in the “Billionaire Tax” and sent him a “cease and desist” letter.

David Gamage from the University of Missouri, Brian Galle and Emmanuel Saez from UC Berkeley, and Darien Shanske from UC Davis claimed that the public criticism violated anti-doxxing laws by sharing contact information. They are clearly wrong. One of the aggrieved professors, Brian Galle, teaches at Berkeley Law School called Lucas “a clown,” but insisted that sharing public information is unlawful.

Attorney Catha Worthman sent the letter, but has reportedly refused to respond to inquiries after attorneys for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) pushed back on her legal claims and those of her clients.

Good luck with that.

White British Children Set to Become Minority in Schools

9th June 2026

Read it.

The latest figures released by England’s Department for Education offer a glimpse into the country’s future, revealing how the British are slowly becoming a minority in their own country.

According to the data for the 2025–2026 school year, the proportion of pupils identified as white British has fallen below 60% for the first time, while the share of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds has reached a record high of nearly 39%.

These developments are presented by British commentator Matt Goodwin on his Substack as evidence of accelerating demographic and cultural change within England. He argues that the trends visible in schools today provide a preview of the country’s future population and social landscape, being based not on British traditions and the English language but dominated by immigration.

The statistics suggest that England’s classrooms are changing at a pace that would have been unthinkable only a decade ago. During the 2015–2016 school year, white British pupils accounted for 70% of all schoolchildren. Now, that figure has fallen to 59.7%.

MIT Boffins Take Electrospray Nozzles Out of the Cleanroom, Into the 3D Printer

9th June 2026

The Register.

The process for producing triple-layer drug-delivery particles and materials for tissue regeneration could get easier, thanks to a new advance in creating the electrospray nozzles used to make them. A team of MIT researchers has now used a 3D resin printer to output tiny electrospray nozzles without the expensive cleanrooms they normally require.

A team led by MIT principal research scientist Dr. Luis Fernando Velásquez-García detailed its work developing tiny arrays of triaxial electrospray emitters in a recent paper. Before jumping into what they actually did, it might be worth explaining exactly what we’re talking about and why it’s such a potential breakthrough.

Electrospraying is a process that relies on tiny nozzles – we’re talking fractions of a millimeter, here – that are subjected to an electric field to atomize liquids into droplets smaller than what can be achieved through purely physical methods. Electrospraying can be done with lots of different liquid materials, and has a variety of uses, from ionizing liquids for mass spectrometry, to space propulsion.

Such cutting-edge applications traditionally require expensive equipment, and electrospray nozzles have classically been no different.

How California’s Election Procedures Turn Early Leads Into Late Losses

9th June 2026

The Foundry.

Delayed vote tallies in Calfornia are attributable to the vote-by-mail system and weeklong deadlines for receiving ballots, which undermines confidence in results, election experts say.

Tuesday is the deadline for the last of California’s ballots to arrive, where about 80% vote by mail and about 40% of ballots arrive after Election Day in the nation’s most populous state. These are among the factors that contribute to repeatedly delayed results.

On Sunday, it appeared that Republican mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt would fall out of contention for the general election after several days of appearing in the top two vote recipients along with L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat. Another Democratic candidate, Nithya Raman, appeared to overtake Pratt for second place to face Bass in the general election. The state’s primaries allow the top two vote-getters, rather than party nominees, to advance to the general election.

California also doesn’t allow local jurisdictions to require voter ID, and allows 22 days for “curing” ballots. Curing is when a voter’s ballot needs to be corrected or clarified to count, such as fixing illegible marks on the ballot or inserting a missing signature on the ballot envelope.

Tim Pool explains it all to you.

Similar apparent flips have occured in previous elections in the state, including in races for the U.S. House of Representatives. On election night in 2024, Republican incumbent Rep. Michelle Steel was leading, but that lead turned into a loss days later as Democrat Derek Tran won the seat 22 days after the election.

That’s not suspicious at all. Perish the thought.

Uncle Sam Considers Buying a Seat on the Titanic

9th June 2026

The Register.

The US government is reportedly weighing whether to take a financial stake in AI companies, which looks a bit like negotiating for a seat on the Titanic.

Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic, the marquee brands in US AI, are profitable yet. While Anthropic may be nearer to that point if its accounting survives scrutiny, OpenAI’s $1.4 trillion in financial commitments over the next eight years have been interpreted as a red flag for investors.

This raises (at least) two questions: Should the US government be picking winners? And should the US government be picking losers?

Bernie Sanders is, of course, very happy with the government picking winners and losers—so long as they are Politically Correct winners and losers—but he’d avoid the whole problem by just stealing half of an AI company for the government rather than actually, you know, paying for it.l

Thomas Massie Calls for USS Liberty Probe, Elevating Anti-Israel Conspiracy Theory to House Floor

9th June 2026

Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie took to the House floor Monday to call for an investigation into Israel’s 1967 attack on an American spy ship, giving new prominence to a decades-old conspiracy theory that has become a touchstone for critics of Israel.

“It’s my great honor, maybe one of the biggest honors of my lifetime, to stand here on the floor and do something that’s 59 years overdue, to recognize the survivors and those who gave their lives on the USS Liberty,” Massie said. “Fifty-nine years ago today when they were viciously attacked by IDF jets and also after that by torpedo boats.”

The attack on the USS Liberty occurred on June 8, 1967, in the midst of Israel’s Six-Day War. The intelligence-gathering ship was stationed off the shore of the Sinai Peninsula during the conflict when it came under attack by Israeli forces, killing 34 crew members and injuring 171 more.

Israel later apologized for the attack, explaining it had mistaken the boat as Egyptian, and paid damages to the United States and the families of the victims. Multiple U.S. investigations, including by the CIA, have since determined that the attack was a mistake.

Still, the incident has become a rallying point for critics of Israel who claim the attack was deliberate and gained more adherents lately as anti-Israel sentiment has swelled. On Friday, Massie cited a host of U.S. military and intelligence officials he said had cast doubt on the outcomes of the U.S. investigations.

Supreme Court Vacates Decision Outlawing Gas Stoves, Water Heaters

8th June 2026

Read it.

On Monday, the Supreme Court vacated a lower court ruling that upheld Biden Energy Department regulations that would outlaw gas stoves and water heaters in Americans’ homes and require homeowners with these to either renovate their homes or switch to electric appliances.

In American Gas Association, et al. V. Dept. Of Energy, et al, the District of Columbia’s district court upheld the Biden Administration’s regulations banning the use of non-condensing appliances, effectively eliminating gas furnaces and water heaters from the marketplace.

In response, the American Gas Association, American Public Gas Association and National Propane Gas Association asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the decision. In their petition to the high court for a writ of certiorari, they stressed the consequences of allowing the lower court’s decision to stand.

8th June 2026

Read it.

he Trump administration has referred more than 100 employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for suspension and debarment after investigators alleged they participated in Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel or were members of Hamas-linked militant groups.

The report issued Friday by the USAID Office of Inspector General, the office overseeing U.S. foreign assistance programs, recommends that 101 individuals be placed on a governmentwide exclusion list barring them from participating in U.S.-funded foreign aid projects for 10 years.

According to the report, those identified included “UNRWA school principals, teachers, security personnel, attendants, psychosocial counselors, and medical professionals” who were found to be members of Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades or other militant organizations.

Among those cited were a “deputy school principal serving as an al-Qassam deputy company commander in the Ain Gallout/5th infantry battalion” and a “math and computer teacher” with “ties to an Al-Qassam intelligence squad.”

Houthis Declare “Total Ban” On Israeli Ships As Dual Chokepoint Crisis Stokes Supply Chain Nightmare

8th June 2026

Read it.

Brent crude futures jumped as much as 5% to $97.83 a barrel, while WTI traded around $95 a barrel, as renewed Iran-Israel fighting threatened to unravel a fragile US-Iran ceasefire and further disrupt energy flows.

On the maritime chokepoint front, Iran-backed Houthis declared a full ban on Israeli vessels in the southern Red Sea, warning that any Israeli ship (or linked ship) will be seen as a military target.

“First: We declare a complete and total ban on maritime navigation for the Israeli enemy in the Red Sea, and we consider all enemy movements to be military targets for our Armed Forces from the moment this statement is issued,” the terror group said Monday in a statement.

The statement continued, “Second: We affirm that we will meet escalation with escalation, and that our military operations will escalate in line with events, the battle, and in conjunction with the axis of Jihad and Resistance.”

“Third: We affirm the right of our people and the peoples of our free nation to confront American-Israeli aggression, and that we will not stand idly by in the face of the unjust siege imposed on our people and the peoples of the axis of Jihad and Resistance in Palestine, Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, and Iraq. All enemy attempts will fail, God willing, and our operations will continue as long as the aggression and siege against us and the axis of Jihad and Resistance continue,” the statement concluded.

CNN’s Jennings Says Dems Are Standing Behind ‘Scumbag, Nazi Tattoo Guy’ Graham Platner

8th June 2026

Newsbusters.

When the polls close on Tuesday night in Maine, it’s all but guaranteed that the man who has been accused of “toxic relationships” by three woman, sexting with women outside his marriage, referred to himself as a communist, called police officers “bastards,” said rural White Americans are racist and stupid, and sported a Nazi tattoo, Graham Platner, will be the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate. The liberal media, in an effort to get out in front of this Democratic disaster, have taken to equating Platner with President Trump and Texas GOP Senate nominee, Ken Paxton. That was the case Saturday on CNN Newsroom.

5 People Hurt in Stabbings at New York’s Penn Station, Suspect in Custody

8th June 2026

Read it.

Six people were injured in a stabbing inside New York’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, authorities said, less than a day before thousands of fans are expected to descend on neighboring Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

A suspect was taken into custody after the attack, which unfolded around 7 p.m. in one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs.

I predict that it will be a Person of Color, because

Authorities did not immediately release details about what led to the stabbing or whether the victims were targeted.

Navy Veteran Accused of Trying to Use Crypto to Send ISIS Money for Drone, RPG Attack on US Troops

A Navy veteran is one of three men recently arrested for allegedly trying to pay more than $2,000 to a person whom they thought was a member of the Islamic State group, or ISIS, to buy rocket-propelled grenades and drones for an attack against U.S. troops overseas, officials said.

Bareen Dzayee, 25, was taken into custody on June 5 along with two other men, a Justice Department news release says. Prosecutors claim Dzayee suggested the drone attack target U.S. Special Forces, according to the Justice Department, according to the Justice Department.

Dzayee enlisted in the Navy in November 2021 and served until July 2024, reaching the rank of seaman, according to his service record, which was provided by the Navy.

After completing the service’s boot camp and Surface Warfare Engineering School in Illinois, Dzayee served on the destroyer USS John S. McCain from March 2022 to July 2024, his record says. KNSD, an NBC television station in San Diego, first reported that Dzayee had served in the Navy.

‘CIAbigail’ Spanberger Wars With Fellow Virginia Democrats

8th June 2026

Read it.

On the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, the leader of the Virginia Senate budget conference decided to start firing on her political opponents from her fortified bunkers on the hill she has occupied, while the governor tries to take the political beach from her and her allies with covert operations.

Here’s where the fun begins.

Saturday, rather than spend time sharing stories of locals who were part of the landing operation in France 82 years ago, Senate conference leader Louise Lucas took out her social media flamethrower.

In response to a post by Sen. Scott Surovell decrying the suggestion of a “DC-style continuing resolution,” the Senate president pro tempore wrote, “we had a meeting with ‘Data Center Diva’ [Gov. Abigail Spanberger] and she agrees with ‘Amazon Don’ (House Speaker Don Scott) who doesn’t want to impact the richest corporations in America!”

Explaining Bureaucratic Bloat

8th June 2026

The Antiplanner.

In recent posts, I’ve noted that the nation’s transit agencies are carrying far fewer riders than in 2019 and yet since that year the size of the transit bureaucracy has grown by more than 50 percent. Two MIT researchers, Vicky Yang and Levi Grenier, have offered a new explanation for such bureaucratic bloat. Instead of looking at transit, they were struck by MIT, whose faculty has grown by 9 percent and the number of students has grown by around 30 percent since 1985, but the number of administrative staff has almost tripled.
