On July 1, 2026, New York City put into place its tax on second homes—the so-called pied-à-terre tax on high-value homes, condos, and co-ops within the city. That tax was applied retroactively from January 1, 2026, but its retroactive application is only one of the many problems with a tax whose two major supporters are New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani. On the day of its publication, the lead editorial of the New York Times dismissed an anticipated fuss over the new tax as though it were no big deal, billing it as a corrective against out-of-staters who freeloaded on New York’s vast cultural and social resources. The Director of Finance in the City, Richard Lee, announced that the city is “committed to implementing the new nonprimary residence property surcharge fairly and efficiently.” But the public mood sharply changed when the Mamdani administration took one large and foolish step when it published a list containing some 960,000 units that could be subject to the tax, including, as the New York Post notes, such celebrities as Woody Allen, Anna Wintour and Cynthia Nixon. The mayor thinks that he can clear $500 million per year, while the Democratic City Controller puts that number between $340 and $380 million—which, given the pace of events, could also be too high. But the bad news is out of the bag: the tax roll already “far exceeds early estimates.”

The story already looks like a colossal policy misadventure. So as the events continue to play out, it is useful to conduct a post-mortem to explain how the legal situation came to this. The driving force behind the campaign is a proud boast: TAX THE RICH. Mamdani makes no bones about it. As he stated on Tax Day, “I promised that we would tax the rich, and with our new pied-à-terre tax, that is exactly what we have done . . . to fund our parks, schools, and libraries.” At the same time, Governor Hochul pleads with the rich ex-New Yorkers to return home, knowing full well that their exodus was driven by a mix of oppressively high taxes and repressive regulations. A pied-à-terre tax is not a way to lure them home.

So now the acid test for the new pied-à-terre tax is this: what does it do to help the situation, especially when it doesn’t only tax the rich? To see how counterproductive the new pied-à-terre tax system is, look at the full table put out by the Department of Finance that covers all classes of non-primary residents, even though there can be only one primary residence, even for full-time New Yorkers with two or more homes in the city.

This says the quiet part out loud: Most of “The Rich” in New York are exactly the Wokerati that Mamdani counts on as his base. Politics is all well and good when it just means verbal virtue-signaling; when it hits the actual pocket-book, well … I suspect that the exodus from New York City will accelerate.

Prof Jason Arday has resigned from the University of Cambridge after The Telegraph revealed he falsely claimed to have published a book.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, Prof Arday said he was stepping down “with immediate effect” from his position at the university and at Jesus College citing the “unrelenting level of public scrutiny”.

It came hours after the university announced it was investigating him following new information regarding his “academic qualifications and honorary appointments”.

Prof Arday, who was a professor of sociology of education, has been at the centre of a plagiarism row after The Telegraph reported accusations he had copied parts of his PhD thesis from another student.

Earlier on Wednesday, The Telegraph also revealed that Prof Arday had repeatedly claimed that he was the author of a book called Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse.

The book was listed in his biography description in published essays as well as in promotional material for speaking events, and was attributed to the Palgrave Macmillan publishing house.

There is no evidence that any book was written or published.

German police have launched a double homicide investigation after two corpses were discovered near an asylum accommodation facility in the southern city of Augsburg. Shortly afterwards, a 29-year-old man was taken into custody as the primary suspect.

According to a police spokesperson, authorities were called to the scene in the southern district of Augsburg on the evening of Monday, August 3rd. Investigators discovered the bodies of two men: a 39-year-old with dual Syrian and Saudi Arabian citizenship, and a 54-year-old Iraqi national.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released in accordance with German privacy laws, is a 29-year-old man holding both Syrian and Saudi Arabian citizenship. He was provisionally arrested at the scene and is currently being investigated on two counts of manslaughter (Totschlag).

Ali Shehab, a leading figure in Sweden’s Foxtrot criminal network, has been sentenced to life in prison by an Iraqi court for drug trafficking, Swedish prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday..

The 22-year-old, who has dual Swedish and Iraqi citizenship, was arrested in Iraq in December 2025 in a joint operation involving Iraqi police and Swedish authorities. Prosecutors said he was convicted for his role in drug trafficking operations that were run from Iraq and directed a criminal network supplying the Swedish market.

According to Swedish prosecutors, Shehab is a close ally of Foxtrot leader Rawa Majid and has been linked to multiple serious crimes in Sweden. He is suspected of ordering the October 2025 shooting on a public street in Gävle, in which a 13-year-old boy opened fire and injured six young people. Authorities also accuse him of instigating murders and attempted murders in Lund, Gävle, Norsborg, and other locations, totaling five murders and 23 attempted murders.

Pedro Sánchez is reportedly preparing to summon three senior ministers for crisis talks as a damaging row over whether his government ignored advance warnings of the mass breach of Spain’s border at Ceuta deepened on Wednesday.

The Spanish prime minister is expected to meet Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Defence Minister Margarita Robles and Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares at La Mareta, the state residence in Lanzarote where he is spending his summer holiday, according to La Razón.

The meeting comes amid growing tensions between the Interior and Defence ministries over what the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) knew before tens of thousands of migrants entered Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa bordering Morocco, last week.

CNI sources told La Razón that the interior ministry was warned “with sufficient time” and that intelligence notes had been prepared. The agency reportedly identified several WhatsApp groups promoting the crossing by July 22—eight days before the influx began—including one named “Crossing to Ceuta or death.”

It remains well within the power of Congress and the president to shut down the contracts, clinics, agencies, and visas that convert foreign money into American citizenship—without amending the Constitution or defying the Court. Until the Court revisits the issue, the political branches are solely responsible for overseeing the marketplace, and they have no excuse to delay.

Tuesday, August 4th saw the French Coast Guard rescue at 170 ‘small boat’ illegal migrants whose unseaworthy vessel caught fire in the English Channel.

The Sweden Democrats (SD) are calling for a much tougher national response to Islamism, saying that the ideology poses one of the greatest threats to Swedish democracy in modern times.

In a recent debate article, party secretary Mattias Bäckström Johansson and MP Johnny Svedin said that decades of large-scale immigration from predominantly Muslim countries have reshaped parts of Sweden, creating neighborhoods where cultures and values are increasingly at odds with Swedish society.

The party, which supports the current government, recently backed the launch of an official inquiry into the scope of political Islam and Islamism in Sweden. The investigation will examine the extent of religious radicalization and how Islamist influence and infiltration are affecting society.

The authors stress that Islamism should not be confused with Islam as a religion, describing it instead as a political ideology that seeks to reorganize society according to religious principles.

A  distinction without a difference. There is no such thing as ‘Islamism’; there are merely Muslims who act as Muslims have acted throughout history, and Muslims who don’t … yet.

Despite repeated assurances from the Spanish government that the migration crisis in Ceuta is easing, residents of the Spanish exclave say the emergency is far from over. While Madrid maintains that most of the migrants who crossed into the city from Morocco have already left, accounts from local residents, the city government and regional media paint a different picture.

Although daily life is slowly returning to normal after businesses shut their doors during the weekend emergency, thousands of migrants are reportedly still in Ceuta, hiding from security forces deployed throughout the city.

The city government says reception centers remain overwhelmed, operating at 2872% above capacity. At the same time, videos allegedly showing remaining migrants shouting “Allahu Akbar” have reignited public debate on the integration of Muslim immigrants in Europe.

Local reports indicate that many migrants have fled into the wooded hills, forests and beaches surrounding Ceuta to avoid being returned to Morocco. According to the Spanish newspaper ABC, groups of around 20 young men have established makeshift camps around the city.

The Afghan man accused of killing a British charity worker and wheeling her body through Athens in a suitcase entered Europe illegally by small boat before becoming a champion boxer and co-founding a refugee charity.

Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, arrived on the Greek island of Lesbos in 2016 after travelling through Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey, according to an account of his journey published online.

He is now accused of murdering 38-year-old Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a Christian volunteer from Edinburgh whose decomposing body was discovered inside a suitcase in a derelict building in Athens’ Kypseli district on July 18.

Medical evidence reportedly suggests Ross died from asphyxiation.

An almost unbelievable scandal involving a professor of black studies at Cambridge University demonstrates how institutional DEI can only be defeated from without, not within.

First, the story, which has received far too little attention from American media.

Cambridge University professor Jason Arday has been one of the darlings of academia, particularly in the U.K. He’s been wildly and effusively celebrated as an incredible, inspirational story of how a young, black man with autism who couldn’t read until he was 18 became an esteemed professor.

“He has helped the Government with its antiracism strategies; advised on the national curriculum; guest-edited the Today program,” Kathleen Stock wrote for UnHeard. “ … His writing has been enthusiastically praised by [journalist] James O’Brien and [member of parliament] David Lammy. His fans now await his memoir, to be published in a month’s time.”

Arday’s life story and work have been promoted as a necessary antidote to the alleged systemic racism of Western societies.

He was a poster child of successful DEI, much like how Ibram X. Kendi was billed as the wise swami of anti-racism before he came crashing down to earth.

Missouri incumbent Rep. Wesley Bell registered a resounding victory in Tuesday’s Democratic primary against Cori Bush, a prominent Democratic socialist and ardent critic of Israel.

The Associated Press called the race just an hour after polls closed, at 8:02pm local time. By 10:15 p.m., Bell had 66.1% to Bush’s 30% with 50% of votes counted.

The primary is a déjà vu moment for St. Louis. The same pair of candidates vied just two years ago to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District.

Bell prevailed in 2024 to oust Bush in a clash that was largely defined by a $9 million influx of AIPAC cash in support of Bell. In this rematch, Bush made the American Israel Public Affairs Committee a central issue in her campaign, similar to other Democratic Socialists of America candidates.

“AIPAC has become yet another way for MAGA-donors to divide the Democratic base by meddling in primaries,” Bush told JTA in a written statement prior to the primary. “In St. Louis and across the country, people know that our fight against antisemitism means fighting against the far-right’s effort to divide us.”

Looks like it worked this time. Or maybe people just woke up to the fact that Cori Bush is a dirtbag communist.

But as the city tries to address problems with the rollout, real estate leaders caution that targeting high earners could ultimately backfire on working-class New Yorkers if revenue shifts out of state.

“Policymakers need to be honest about the trade-offs and what drives the local economy,” Aria Development Group founding partner David Arditi told Fox News Digital, warning that if high-earning taxpayers leave, “it doesn’t just hit the people who left, it shows up much more prominently in the budget of those who will stay behind.”

“Every city that leans this heavily on a small group of high earners has to reckon eventually with this possibility. New York still continues to have real staying power, but we’re clearly in a moment where that’s being tested,” he continued.

That was the smug verdict in much of the commentary over the weekend. Tens of thousands of people may have crossed illegally into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

But when Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, declared shortly afterwards that “practically all” of them had returned to Morocco, relief quickly gave way to mockery – even though almost nobody had bothered to verify Madrid’s claims.

Giorgia Meloni’s outrage, and her suggestion that Schengen free movement with Spain might have to be temporarily suspended? Wildly overblown, apparently. So too was the criticism coming from other European capitals.

German liberal weekly Die Zeit denounced what it called “fact-free Spain-bashing” and went further still: “The new arrivals were returned quickly and without bureaucracy, so precisely what conservative and Right-wing parties always demand has happened.”

It would be comforting if that were true. It is not.

A mega-dinghy believed to be carrying 160 migrants has caught fire during an attempt to cross the Channel.

Search and rescue services were launched at around 6am on Tuesday after the vessel’s engine went up in flames in French waters.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Eastbourne was deployed alongside both the British and French coastguards as part of a rescue operation to retrieve the migrants and return them to France.

It is understood that up to 160 people were on board the dinghy, it is not yet known whether any of those on board have been injured or killed.

The average number of people per small boat has increased from seven in 2018 to 63 in the year ending this March, and up to 70 last month.

Crime rates have fallen to “historic lows” across the United States, with homicides this year on track to register the lowest level in at least 126 years, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In the first half of 2026, homicides were down 18 percent compared to the first half of last year, DHS said in a July 31 statement. Carjacking crimes tumbled 47 percent during this period, motor vehicle thefts fell 20 percent, robberies dropped 17 percent, and residential burglaries declined 13 percent.

The numbers come from a July 2026 report from the nonpartisan think tank Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) that assessed crime stats across various U.S. cities.

Shortly after Virginia removed more than 6,500 noncitizens from its voter rolls, Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she has restored voting rights for 10 times that many convicted felons in the state.

Virginia’s state constitution permanently disenfranchises convicted felons but gives the governor’s office broad discretion in restoring the rights. Spanberger announced Friday that 66,085 formerly incarcerated Virginians have had their voting rights restored since she took office in January.

“The right to vote is foundational to who we are as Americans. As a Member of Congress, as a candidate for Governor, and in the months since I took office, I have heard from many Virginians who have shared their personal stories of redemption with me — and heartfelt reflections of the moment their voting rights were restored by previous governors,” Spanberger said in a public statement.

Accordingly, the restoration of voting rights to a convicted felon ought to entail the same sort of scrutiny as pardoning said criminal. But Democrats need the votes, so blanket amnesty it is.
