Iran Refuses to Hand Over Crash Data, Stoking Speculation Plane Was Accidentally Shot Down

8th January 2020

Read it.

More suspicious details have surfaced over the past few hours as investigators take the first hard look at the circumstances that caused a Boeing 737 to plunge out of the sky minutes after takeoff.

Bloomberg reports that foreign investigations into what happened will undoubtedly be hindered by the regime, particularly amid rising tensions with Washington. Meanwhile, more evidence as emerged to suggest that the jet was a victim of a misfiring of Iran’s missile defense system.

As theories multiplied, the Ukrainian embassy in Tehran amended an earlier statement on its website, in which it ruled out terrorism. Instead, it offered ‘no comment’ on possible causes.

The Washington Post — Message Board for the Deep State

7th January 2020

Read it.

At Power Line, we sometimes refer to the Washington Post as an adjunct of the Democratic Party. To an even greater degree, the Post is an adjunct of official Washington — the cadre of career bureaucrats and former officials who consider it their God given right to set policy, regardless of what elected officials desire. (There is, of course, considerable overlap between official Washington and the Democratic Party).

Thus, it’s not surprising that a few minutes after I read Steve’s post called “Trump’s sin: Conducting foreign policy without permission,” I read this Washington Post story called “Trump is short on advisers, allies as he faces Iran crisis.” In this article, the Post argues, in essence, that Trump is committing the sin of conducting foreign policy without permission.

Democrats vs. The Bee

7th January 2020

John Hinderaker has some fun.

As you undoubtedly know, the Babylon Bee is America’s leading satire site. It gently mocks contemporary leftism, something that leftists can’t abide. Humor is, after all, a powerful tool. So the Left–specifically, the Democratic Party–is out to get the Bee. That’s not funny!

I must confess that I sometimes can’t tell whether a Babylon Bee article is real or satire. The Left is just that crazy sometimes.

Veteran Sonarman Explains Why Pump-jets Are Superior to Props on Modern Submarines

6th January 2020

Read it.

Pump-jet propulsors also feature better efficiency across most all but the low-end of a submarine’s performance envelope. They protect the blade elements contained within them. They can also be handy in shallow water, especially if they have a nozzle or deflecting surfaces for thrust vectoring. There are drawbacks, as well. They are heavy, making them ill-suited for many smaller submarine designs, and they are costlier and more complex than a propeller.

A GAO study released in early 2019 detailed ongoing, critical problems in recruiting, training and sustaining front-line and support personnel across all services and at all levels and, purportedly, the Pentagon has no comprehensive strategy to address them. Given millennials’ attitudes toward the military, this situation will likely worsen.

Pre-Inca Canal System Uses Hillsides as Sponges to Store Water

6th January 2020

Read it.

A team of hydrologists, engineers, and social scientists is hoping to strengthen the water security of Lima and other Peruvian cities through analysis of a 1,400-year-old nature-based system developed by pre-Inca mountain communities. The technique uses a canal system that diverts water from streams to small ponds or spreads it over rocky hillslopes that act as natural sponges. This slows the flow of water down the mountains, preserving it into the dry season.

Sorry, Bill Gates, You’re Wrong About an Income Tax

5th January 2020

Read it.

I admire Gates’ philanthropy and respect it. He has done fantastic things for this world. But two of the things he has always demanded of the organizations to which his foundation donates is efficiency and return on investment. There is nothing more inefficient than government. While people are sleeping in tents on 35-degree nights, government agencies devoted to stopping homelessness spent money on a conference that featured a stripper.

Bill Gates is worth $110 billion. If the government took half of his wealth, he is still filthy stinking rich beyond any of our wildest dreams for ourselves.

Compare and contrast that to a mom and dad who have both worked really hard their whole lives. Let’s say they’ve denied themselves some indulgences because they wanted to provide for themselves and their families, so they could have something for their kids. They’ve invested, they’ve been diligent, and they’ve worked tirelessly. Over the years, they accumulated $1 million or $2 million. Now you want to take half of that? They go from having their own little piece of the American Dream to wondering why they denied themselves those indulgences for all those years, if the money was just going to government anyway. The $1 million they lose out on is a lot different than the $50 billion Gates would lose.

Fungal Architecture

5th January 2020

Read it.

As one of the primary consumers of environmental resource, the building industry faces unprecedented challenges in needing to reduce the environmental impact of current consumption practices. This applies to both the construction of the built environment and resource consumption during its occupation and use. Where incremental improvements to current practices can be realised, the net benefits are often far outstripped by the burgeoning demands of rapidly increasing population growth and urbanisation. Against the backdrop of this grand societal challenge, it is necessary to explore approaches that envision a paradigm shift in how material is sourced, processed and assembled to address the magnitude of these challenges in a truly sustainable way, and which can even provide added value. We propose to develop a structural substrate by using live fungal mycelium, functionalise the substrate with nanoparticles and polymers to make a mycelium-based electronics, implement sensorial fusion and decision making in the fungal electronics and to growing monolithic buildings from the functionalised fungal substrate. Fungal buildings will self-grow, build, and repair themselves subject to substrate supplied, use natural adaptation to the environment, sense all what human can sense.

The Weirdo Problem

4th January 2020

ZMan points out what everybody’s thinking.

This is a problem that all outsider politics faces. The weirdo problem was not unique to the alt-right. Anyone who has attended a Libertarian Party event knows that movement has had a weirdo problem for generations. The environmental movement has had a similar problem. Most people are happy to support conservation efforts, for example, but when they see some nut dressed as an elf, demanding everyone give up their cars, they assume he and the movement are crazy.
