California Government Abandons Rooftop Solar, Favors Big Utilities

4th December 2015

Read it.

California has stunned green advocates, by excluding rooftop solar from their renewable energy mandate.

LA Times speculates that this shift in policy was due to pressure from utilities and unions – rooftop solar installers are not extensively unionised, compared to workers in large solar utility plants.

California: Run By Demoncrats = Crony ‘Capitalism’ = Politicians In Bed With Businesses That Give Them Money.

Seems pretty clear to me.

“We Can Make Your Problem Go Away”: Turkey’s Responsibility for the ‘Refugee Crisis’

4th December 2015

Read it.

For years the Turkish coast guard and police had stopped most of the people-smuggling boats from crossing the narrow strip of the Aegean between Anatolia and the Greek Islands. As long as those boats were stopped, the flow of migrants into the EU from Turkey remained a trickle. Most Mediterranean trafficking used the more westerly route from Libya or Tunisia to Lampedusa, Pantelleria, Malta, Sicily, and the southern Italian mainland.

All that changed about five months ago, when Turkey abruptly stopped interdicting the people-smugglers, who were allowed to ply their trade without hindrance. The results are well-known: a million or so “refugees” have illegally entered the European Union by landing in Greece and then traveling overland to Austria and Germany.

The Dog That Won’t Quit Barking

4th December 2015

The evidence continues to accumulate that the Bonnie and Clyde massacre in San Bernardino yesterday was a case of jihad. We’ve got the home armory. We’ve got the pilgrimage to Mecca. We’ve got the contact with foreign terrorist subjects. Sherlock Holmes solved the case in the story “Silver Blaze” with the clue of the dog that didn’t bark. The San Bernardino dog won’t shut up.

Huh. Donald Trump Was Right After All

4th December 2015

Read it. And watch the video.

Donald Trump’s insistence that he saw one or more television news stories about Muslims in Jersey City celebrating the collapse of the Twin Towers in September 11 provoked outrage on the left. Among others, the Washington Post’s fact checker, Glenn Kessler, awarded Trump four Pinocchios, claiming that his assertion was “outrageous.” I wrote about the controversy here, agreeing that Trump exaggerated–there was no evidence that thousands of Muslims celebrated–but that Kessler was also wrong in dogmatically denying that there was any evidence of any such reaction to the 9/11 attacks. The controversy has continued from there, as Trump has doggedly insisted that he saw a television report that was the basis for his statement.

Now, someone has found the TV news report that Trump probably was talking about. It is from a local station in New York and was broadcast on September 16, 2001. The report confirms that Muslims were observed celebrating the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, and says that eight were arrested. This is consistent with newspaper accounts that were published at the time, including one in the Washington Post:

No apology will be coming from the Drive-By Media, of course.

The War on Noticing

3rd December 2015

Steve Sailer spells it out.

At this point, I don’t want to debate specific actions, but just call attention to the zeitgeist of the War on Noticing.

An analogy is to driving on a two lane winding road. You constantly have to make small decisions and adjustments to keep from either going into the ditch on the right or into oncoming traffic on the left. If you are trying to drive safely, sometimes you make perfect adjustments, sometimes you undercompensate to the right or left, sometimes you overcompensate to the right, other times you overcompensate to the left.

But if you adopt a rule that you will never ever allow yourself to overcompensate to the right, you will, on average undercompensate, and these errors will build up pushing you on average toward the left. Eventually, you will inevitably wind up over the line on the left with oncoming traffic headed your way.

How ChefSteps and Gabe Newell Plan to Transform Sous Vide Cooking

3rd December 2015

Read it.

If you don’t know anything about sous vide cooking, there’s a good article in Wikipedia on it.

ChefSteps is selling its new product not as a straightforward retail product, but as a tool for its growing community. Think about how Nintendo or Sony builds upon its popular products and the demands of its audience to create new hardware and software. The similarities between the video game world and the culinary world suddenly seem obvious. ChefSteps videos featuring sous vide cooking are some of the sites’ most watched content. Young says they wanted Joule to live in “your top drawer or your countertop,” not in the back of your cabinet with all of the other wacky appliances you buy on a whim, use once, and never pull out again.

I use mine as often as I can, and I’m looking forward to doing more with it.

Jihadism in San Bernardino, Now Proven

3rd December 2015

Lion of the Blogosphere pulls back the veil.

Since the term “jihadism” doesn’t exist in the liberal vocabulary (because it implies that there is something wrong with Islam and Allah forbid that anyone should imply that), which is also the vocabulary of Obama and the MSM (except maybe for Fox News), they have to classify it as terrorism (which is caused by lack of good job opportunities and not by Islam even though Farook was making a pretty good salary as a health inspector for the government) or something else.

EuroParliament Prez: Christians ‘Not Safe In Our Continent’

3rd December 2015

Read it.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

Speakers cited the work of Open Doors, a human rights organization that monitors the persecution of Christians, noting that 150 million Christians worldwide suffer torture, rape and arbitrary imprisonment. Christians in Iraq, Somalia, Syria, Pakistan, North Korea and Nigeria are among those hardest hit.

Nothing better underscores that Islam, like Communism, is an oppressive totalitarian ideology with which no co-existence is possible.

Another Way the Ivy League Perpetuates Inequality

3rd December 2015

Read it.

We’ve written before that “America’s top universities, for all their rhetoric about equality, diversity, and social justice, actually do far more to perpetuate and sustain the upper class than they do to promote those values.” Schools like Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton “rack up billions in tax-exempt donations, connect their disproportionately wealthy students to lucrative job opportunities, and foster exclusive social networks of the rich and powerful.”

A new study out of UC San Diego highlights one of the ways this process works. According to the authors, elite universities facilitate the Ivy League-Wall Street nexus by actively shepherding students into fields of finance and consulting by giving these firms preferential access to their students.

Where was this system when I needed it? Sheesh.

The simple fact is, that the people who go to these schools are, by any measure, the cream of the crop, and the cream always rises. (That others are also successful doesn’t undercut my thesis: These upper-level institutions simply don’t have the room to embrace all of the top-tier.)

This is true despite the increasing adulteration of the student population with affirmative-action admissions and other politically-motivated pandering — such people either don’t get picked for jobs in areas like finance or ‘flunk out’ as soon as their incompetence becomes apparent … although that is also being steadily adulterated by ‘diversity’ mandates in business firms; but such tokens rarely make the Big Bucks unless they wind up in a successful race-hustling operation like the Rainbow Coalition or some other lobbying group.

Biafra May Be Staging a Comeback

3rd December 2015

Read it.

Dissatisfied with Nigeria’s messy governance and the recent election of a Muslim president from the country’s north, the Igbo people are starting to talk again about reviving Biafra, the secessionist state that was repressed in a brutal civil war in the late 60s.

In Europe, nobody would doubt that Biafrans constitute a nation and have the right to a state. The Igbo population, at 32 million, is larger than 22 members of the EU. In Africa, they’ve been told they are a tribe, and in 1970 the world stood by as they were starved into surrender.

Second Amendment and Jihad

3rd December 2015

Lion of the Blogosphere understands the dialectic.

When the Second Amendment was written, it was assumed that the gun owners would be white Christian men.

In a country where there are nearly 3 million Muslims (which is greater than the entire population of the United States in 1776), easy access to guns just makes it easier for them to commit jihad.

That’s an argument you will never hear from liberals. Just putting it out there.

Harvard to Discontinue Use of ‘House Master’ Title

3rd December 2015

Read it.

Harvard College plans to change the title of its heads of residential housing from “house master,” the traditional term, to a new term that will better reflect “the 21st-century needs of residential student life,” according to a letter to students from the college dean, Rakesh Khurana.

The change, announced in an email sent out Tuesday, comes after long discussion over whether the term “master” has connotations of slavery, and in the wake of recent protests at Harvard and other colleges over racial bias, from the real to the symbolic

I suggest ‘Head Coddler’ as being an accurate reflection of the position’d duties.

Muslim “No-go Zones” in Europe

3rd December 2015

Read it.

The existence of “no-go zones” in predominantly Muslim areas in Europe has been a major topic of conversation since the latest Paris massacre on November 13, primarily due to the assailants’ many connections to Molenbeek, a heavily Muslim district of Brussels. This discussion brings to mind my visit to a drug- and crime-infested slum of 7,000 inhabitants in Marseilles, France, on Jan. 29, to see the situation for myself.

I entered the housing complex in an unmarked but recognizable city-owned car driven by a city employee who had been tasked with showing me around. Unfortunately, being mostly a paper-pusher and not experienced in the field, he got spooked and abruptly turned around to leave, raising suspicions among the drug dealers around us, who proceeded to set off the alarm.

A motorcyclist and a truck then zipped ahead of us and boxed us in on a nearby highway. Sitting in the car’s front passenger seat, I was accosted and threatened by four young thugs. The city rep pleaded with them, telling them I was a visiting sociologist. They responded first with threatening comments and then by throwing a piece of concrete the size of a football through the back window. Luckily no on was injured, and they let us leave after the intimidating incident had concluded. I provided the mayor’s office with audio, video, and still photographs of the thugs and their license plates.

What a model of assimilation. Let’s let them all in. What could go wrong?

“Rampage” in San Bernardino?

3rd December 2015

Lion of the Blogosphere sums it up very nicely.

Yes, that’s what the LA Times is calling it. Not Islamic terrorism. A rampage.

Meanwhile, we now know that the two (not three) suspects were a devoutly religious Muslim of Pakistani origin, Syed Rizwan Farook, and his Saudi Arabian bride. He allegedly met the Saudi Arabian woman, Tashfeen Malik, online, and went to Saudi Arabia to meet her in person, and then they were married.

The mainstream media, which is trying to pin the terrorism label on the crazy guy who shot people at Planned Parenthood, is trying to assign this obvious case of terrorism to workplace violence.

Yeah, workplace violence like the jihadist Nidal Hassan shooting up Fort Hood.

This tells you everything you need to know about the Narrative.

Obama Calls for ‘Stronger Background Checks’ to Prevent Mass Shootings

3rd December 2015

The only ‘stronger background check’ that would have prevented the San Bernardino shooting would be one that barred Muslims from buying guns or explosives. But, of course, that’s not what he meant; after all, that would be ‘profiling’.

Spare Us: Carmakers Removing Trunk Tires in More Models

3rd December 2015

Read it.

Automakers are removing the spares to save money and trim weight to improve efficiency as they face increasingly stringent fuel economy standards. Trading a spare tire for an inflation kit removes about 25 pounds from the car.

They are also “eliminating the spare tire well to increase usable interior space in downsized vehicles as well as to improve the aerodynamics of the underside of the vehicle for better mileage,” said Megan McKernan, manager of the Auto Club’s Automotive Research Center.

So you have government-mandated fuel economy regulations to thank.

Impact of Illegal Aliens

2nd December 2015

Read it.

My son was a great boy — no parent should ever have to go through what I did. An illegal alien from Mexico, a member of a violent street gang who had just been released from Los Angeles County jail after his third gun charge, shot my son Jamiel Jr. to death in 2008. My son was on his way home from the mall after we spent the morning at a football camp.

Jamiel was murdered three houses from our home and left in the street. He was shot in the stomach, and while he lay on his back with his hands up, he was shot a second time through his hand and in his head. His mother, an Army sergeant, was on her way home from the Middle East when Jamiel was killed. She made it home in time to bury her son.

And there you have it.

Another Association Backs Israel Boycott

2nd December 2015

Read it.

The National Women’s Studies Association is the newest scholarly group to back the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel.

What does ‘Women’s Studies’ have to do with Israel? Is Israel a place where women are significantly oppressed? (What about the surrounding Arab states? Can we expect a similar boycott? I’m sorry, I can’t say that with a straight face….)

“We’re basically redefining feminism and putting solidarity with Palestine into that definition of what it means to be a feminist,” said Sharoni, a professor of gender and women’s studies at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. “Or, to put it differently, the vote of almost 90 percent of the members of the National Women’s Studies Association in support of this resolution underscores the fact that boycott, divestment and sanctions can be or is seen by members of our association as an example of expressing feminist solidarity.”

In other words, ‘women’s studies’ aren’t about studies at all, but merely a vehicle for pushing cultural Marxism and lining up behind the ‘progressive’ Narrative.

ATR Urges Support for Resolution to Impeach IRS Chief John Koskinen

2nd December 2015

Read it.

ATR President Grover Norquist today sent a letter to members of Congress urging support for H.Res.494, a resolution to impeach IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, introduced by House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah).

It is imperative that the IRS be perceived as an impartial, nonpolitical agency. Its job is to administer the tax code in a fair way. But under Commissioner Koskinen the agency has inserted itself in the political arena, misled investigators, and deceived the American people.

Americans for Tax Reform is one of the few organizations that stick up for the rights of taxpayers. Koskinen is just the latest in a gaggle of Administration officials who have deeply politicized the Executive branch of the government (don’t get me started on the Attorney General). I think it would be a good thing to start impeaching and removing from office these partisan trolls, as an example to future officeholders.

600 Refugees in Australian Detention Centre Write Open Letter Demanding Assisted Suicide

2nd December 2015

I am not making this up.

Hundreds of refugees are thought to have signed an open letter calling for mass assisted suicide in the Australian immigration detention centre where they are being held.

Australian immigration lawyer Julian Burnside posted a transcript of the letter on his blog on Monday.

An obvious stunt to put political pressure on the Australian government to open the floodgates. Note what they did NOT ask for: Assistance in going back where they came from.

Speaking to Vice Australia, a refugee living on Manus, who gave his name only as Mahmud, claimed to have written the letter.

Living with Islam.

He said: “Recently Immigration is telling us there is no country that will accept us on this planet.

Can’t say that I blame them. Unmentioned: Where they came from, which could probably be persuaded to take them back.

Allahu Akhbar From Central Africa to Macedonia

2nd December 2015

Read it. And watch the videos.

The consonants K-B-R form the Arabic stem for “greater”. Whenever you hear Muslims shout “Allahu Akhbar!”, they are using the comparative form of the adjective “great” to say “Allah is greater [than any other god]”.

The leader of a mob of jihadis will shout “Takbir!” to his followers, receiving an “Allahu Akhbar!” as the ritual response. The word “takbir” is formed by adding a T- to K-B-R. The prefix has the meaning of an imperative to “call” or “profess”, so that the jihad cheerleader is saying, in effect, “Shout ‘[Allah is] greater’!”

This chant is heard all over the world wherever the mujahideen gather to fire themselves up for holy war against the infidels.

That’s what’s happening in the following video, which was recorded during Pope Francis’ visit to the Central African Republic. The mujahideen in this case are veiled young ladies. Euronews conceals what they are doing by muting the sound and replacing their chant with a voice-over, to convey the impression that they are joyously greeting the pope. However, the raw footage from the scene tells a different story:

The Distorted Politics of Gun Control

1st December 2015

Read it.

The overwhelming majority of fatal shootings in America happen in our inner cities. They aren’t committed by mentally ill loners, but by gang members involved in petty disputes. About half of the dead are black men (who represent just six percent of the total U.S. population). The most common type of firearm used is a handgun.

Black lives matter … except when it’s a black trigger finger.

Democrats increasingly see gun control as a wedge issue, and are therefore may be more willing to identify gun violence as a problem associated with their political enemies—white men in red states. Talking about gun violence in communities that vote overwhelmingly Democratic would not rally the base as effectively.

The Maps That Prove the Daylight Saving Cycle Is Ruining Our Lives

But what would the country really look like without Daylight Saving Time? As Axis Maps cartographer Andy Woodruff points out in a recent blog post, its effects are not consistent across the United States. But even so, the time-turning phenomenon looks pretty horrifying for those who arise at the reasonable hour of 7 a.m.

Affordability Baffles Planners and Politicians

1st December 2015

Read it.

The Washington, DC, public housing authority has figured out how to solve the region’s affordability problems: Evict people from public housing, convert the dwellings into luxury homes, sell them at a profit, then use the profits to build more affordable housing. This cycle can be repeated endlessly, especially since it won’t really solve the problem.

The housing authority claims it is only selling homes at “scattered sites,” especially ones in “more desirable neighborhoods,” while it concentrates the subsidized homes in what must be less-desirable neighborhoods. In other words, it is increasing income segregation, exactly the opposite of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s goal of promoting more integration of both races and incomes. Apparently, DC’s housing authority didn’t get the memo.

I’m sure that the real-estate developer friends of public officials (all Democrats, of course; this is D.C.) are quite pleased with the arrangement.

Drug Laws and Gun Controls Are Just Business Opportunities for Corrupt Cops

1st December 2015

Read it.

Following in the footsteps of so many people before him, Juan Pimentel saw opportunity in restrictive laws. It’s an old story; government officials tell people they can’t have what they want, and that prohibition creates a lucrative business opportunity for anybody willing to break the law to keep buyers happy. But when Pimentel was pulled over two weeks ago north of Tucson, Arizona with 150 pounds of forbidden cocaine destined for Chicago, there was something a little special about him: he was a U.S. Border Patrol agent—one of the people hired and trusted to enforce government officials’ will.

Sarah Furay’s case is a little different, since she had no badge in her wallet when she was busted last month in College Station, Texas with commercial quantities of cocaine, marijuana, Ecstasy, psychedelics, hash oil, and hydrocodone (one-stop shopping, indeed).  But she is the daughter of Bill Furay, a Drug Enforcement Administration official with the U.S. embassy in Panama and the former head of the DEA office in Galveston, Texas. No doubt, she’s had ample opportunity to see the potential for profit in the laws her dear old dad enforces.
