It is said that Soviet negotiations with Hezbollah failed after Hezbollah kidnapped four attaches in Beirut back in the ’80’s. So Hezbollah executed one of them. The KGB kidnapped the nephew of a highly-placed Hezbollah official, castrated him, shot him, and delivered severed parts and proof of death to Hezbollah, along with a list if names and addresses of other relatives. The remaining three attaches were released promptly.
I imagine Putin knows this.
