The 2012 Whiteness Crisis and the Race-Riot Card

13th May 2012

Steve Sailer notes a disturbing trend.

Clearly, some whites are being punished to encourage the others. But … to encourage the others to do what, precisely?

To not even think about not re-electing the black President. Don’t go there. The message that’s being sent is: bad stuff happens to people who don’t like blacks, which, for practical purposes in 2012 can be defined as people whom blacks don’t like, or whom blacks might not like if they ever noticed them.

Perhaps that answers the perennial puzzle of why black people feel attracted to Islam, despite the deep involvement of Muslims in the historical slave trade.

The ultimate message is one that can’t be sent publicly, at least not before a lot more ground is prepared via Two Minute Hates or Two Month Hates in the case of George Zimmerman:

Nice little gentrified downtown you’ve got there. It would be a shame if anything were to happen to it Election Night because some vibrant youths were displeased that their side lost.

Muslims have already learned that particular lesson, and applied it with great success in Europe. If you’re going to pick a model, go with a winner.

US Self-Defence Guru Tim Larkin Barred From Britain

11th May 2012

Read it.

Tim Larkin, a US self-defence instructor who teaches pupils to “inflict crippling pain from injury to easily damaged body parts” has been barred from Britain where he was due to give seminars in areas hit by last year’s riots.

Apparently defending yourself is yet another thing one is not allowed to do any more in Britain.

“The Home Secretary will seek to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good.”

This is the kind of power that Eric Holder dreams of….

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

Obama’s To-Do List

11th May 2012

Read it.

Characteristically combining arrogance with silliness, President Obama has given Congress a to-do list. The list includes the same chestnuts Obama has been promoting for a while; it really is directed to the House of Representatives only. Notably absent from Obama’s list is any suggestion that the Senate should adopt a budget, as is required by law.

I mean, really — obeying the law and saving the country from financial meltdown is just so fifteen minutes ago. Let’s move on to the really important stuff, like shutting down coal plants and ‘gay marriage’.

7th Circuit Orders Injunction Against Illinois Ban on Recording Cops

11th May 2012

Read it.

Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ordered a preliminary injunction barring Cook County from enforcing the Illinois Eavesdopping Act against “people who openly record police officers performing their official duties in public.” The law, the strictest of its kind in the country, makes such recording a Class 1 felony, punishable by four to 15 years in prison.

Well, let’s see what the blue states are up to these days.

  • Michigan adopts state socialism, and descends into anarchy, with race war around the corner. Check.
  • Illinois adopts fascism (i.e. state socialism in a Clever Plastic Disguise), and turns into a police state. Check.
  • Both states are reliably Democrat. Check.

Hmmm. No surprises here. Well, maybe there’s something on television….

Proposed Ban of PVC in Government Buildings Could Cause Environmental and Economic Harm

10th May 2012

Read it.

Recently, USGCB has sought to ban Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from government buildings even though studies have shown that PVC outperforms other alternatives. And the unintended consequences of these “green guidelines” could do more harm than good to the economy and the environment.

Leadership in Energy Development (LEED) is a certification process run by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGCB), a non profit, that certifies buildings as being “green” enough. And the USGBC has announced, in guidelines which can be seen here, that it will attempt to stipulate hat builders use “materials that do not contain” polyvinyl chloride  (PVC). But the science LEED uses is flawed.

The embattled GSA would adopt the guidelines, which is no surprise since the GSA, which oversees the leasing and administration of all government buildings and properties, has direct ties to LEED. In fact, the GSA’s deputy director of the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings, Donald Horn, is an adviser to LEED’s board of directors.

Hey, one hand washes the other. Good thing it wasn’t the NRA, or they’d really be in trouble.

Taking a Scythe to the Bill of Rights

9th May 2012

George Will blows the whistle.

His “People’s Rights Amendment” declares that the Constitution protects only the rights of “natural persons,” not such persons organized in corporations, and that Congress can impose on corporations whatever restrictions Congress deems “reasonable.” His amendment says that it shall not be construed “to limit the people’s rights of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, free exercise of religion, freedom of association and all such other rights of the people, which rights are inalienable.” But the amendment is explicitly designed to deny such rights to natural persons who, exercising their First Amendment right to freedom of association, come together in corporate entities to speak in concert.

Is It Really a Bullying Crisis?

8th May 2012

Read it.

I remember being bullied when I was a kid, but no one considered it a crisis then. I just did the healthy thing and put a hard shell around my feelings while developing a seething bitterness toward the world.

Has bullying really gotten worse? Maybe kids have just gotten sissier.

Actually, the real bullying crisis is the bullying on the part of ‘activist’ groups and their Big Brother, the government. ‘You’d better do it my way, or my brother will beat you up!’

We’re far removed from the days when children entertained themselves by shooting each other in the face with BB guns; childhood is now all about safety, being attuned to our emotions and avoiding peanut allergies.

This isn’t good for the country. Think: When Elvis was drafted, he at least looked capable of holding a rifle; you can’t say the same about Justin Bieber.

And there you have it.

NY: Dems’ ‘Minimum’ Job-Killer

7th May 2012

Read it.

Assembly Democrats want to raise New York’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour. Gov. Cuomo’s left the door open to this job-killer, so it could yet become law this year. Yet this mandate would make New York’s business climate even more uncompetitive — while harming the people it’s supposed to help.

Few if any of the folks pushing the minimum-wage hike have ever run a private-sector business. They have zero understanding of how hard it already is for job-creators in New York to run their businesses.

Indeed, I think it’s safe to say that few if any of the folks pushing the minimum-wage hike have ever held a minimum-wage job.

It doesn’t take a great deal of intelligence to grasp the simple fact that if you raise the price of something, you lessen demand for it. Yet politicians of all stripes seem to think that demand for low or unskilled labor is so inelastic that you can play with the price all you want without affecting how many people get employed. That this sort of stupidity makes its way into law is one of the chief indicators that our political system is badly broken.

Coroner Mystified by Death of British Spy in Bag

2nd May 2012

Read it.

It is unlikely that the death of a British spy found at his home in 2010 — his naked body padlocked inside a large red carrying bag stowed in the bathtub — will ever be satisfactorily explained, coroner Fiona Wilcox said Wednesday.

I suspect Jason Bourne.

There was a key to the bag in which he was found inside it with him, and there were others in his apartment, Wilcox said.

There was no sign of a break-in or robbery in his neat, tidy apartment, she said Wednesday. She described his body as “peaceful” and said there was no indication of a struggle.

Definitely Jason Bourne.

Are Apple’s Tax Games Bad for America?

30th April 2012

Read it.

Never mind the insane and arcane details. The big picture is that the world’s countries have built a great tax maze by competing to offer the most attractive rates to multinational companies, and the most sophisticated firms know how to navigate the labyrinth. It’s not unlike a shopping pro using coupons, sales, and return policies to pay bottom price at competing electronic stores — except at a much more complex and international level.

The reaction to the Times story has been fraught with indignation. But readers on every side of the federal tax debate ought to get used to this sort of thing. Yes, it’s frustrating, and yes, it’s morally debatable. But no matter what, U.S. multinationals are going to make most of their money overseas. No matter what, they’re going to use (legal) overseas loopholes to hide their money from our relatively high corporate tax rate. And, no matter what, we’re not going to see the vast majority of this money. And maybe we shouldn’t. Apple is an American company, but it makes two-thirds of its money overseas and its Asian market is growing almost three times faster than the American market.

Who wins in this system? Not the U.S. government, which is poorer for our efforts to have a high marginal tax rate that drives money out of the country. Not Apple and other multinationals, whose business plans are shaped by tax arcana rather than endogenous business strategies. And not Americans, who benefit neither from the tax money we don’t see nor the domestic investments we don’t get.

‘We’re the Wolf PAC and we’re coming.’

29th April 2012

Read it.

Actually, they’re just breathing hard. And eventually they’ll get over it, because, like the ‘occupy’ movement, their generation has endemic ADHD, and soon another squirrel will cross their paths, and then — all gone, leaving nothing behind but a monumental pile of trash that the grownups will have to clean up, at taxpayer expense.

Nothing better illustrates the ‘graphic novel approach to life’ adopted by far too many of the post-Boomer proletariat than this silly petition.

For one thing, the right in question belongs, not to the corporation as such, to the management of the corporation as agents for the shareholders. So there’s no ‘there’ there — no attribute of a corporation qua corporation to remove. Just as your attorney can spend money on your behalf on political speech in exercise of your First Amendment right, so can a corporation, acting on behalf of the shareholders, individual citizens, in exercise of their First Amendment rights.

(The question whether the shareholders want ‘their’ corporation to exercise their First Amendment rights in any particular individual manner is a question of corporate governance, not of Constitutional right. This is what happens when people not trained in the law attempt attempt political action based on a misapprehension — the problem ain’t what they know, but what they ‘know’ that ain’t so.)

For another thing, that a corporation is in law a person is of the essence of the corporate form of doing business. Wipe that out, and we return to the quasi-partnership joint stock arrangements that were the best that people could do before the Industrial Revolution (which the corporate form was a key ingredient in fostering). So our kiddies are not only ignorant of the law, they are also appallingly ignorant of both history and economics. Somehow that doesn’t surprise me.

This is what comes of sending your kids to government schools: A lot of indignation, but no real knowledge.

Parents Who Sued School Over Son’s Punishment for Cheating Receive Hate Messages

Obama Backs Down on Farm Chore Ban

27th April 2012

Read it.

I suppose one can credit the Obama administration for knowing when to admit it is wrong, but one also has to wonder what it says about the administration, or the bureaucracy, that it constantly tosses out these ideas only to have them overruled. Imagine all the bad press the administration could save itself if these ideas were shut down at some earlier stage before they became official proposals, and all the time and money that could be saved if the people who sit around dreaming up these overreaches were given the opportunity to seek more productive work in the private sector.

UK: Pupils Failing to Study British History at School

27th April 2012

Lessons in history are being increasingly undermined by an “incoherent, fragmented and repetitive” curriculum that leaves most children feeling “bored”, it was claimed.

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

The subject is also being distorted by a poor-quality exams system, which places an excessive emphasis on broad enquiry skills over core knowledge, researchers said.

After all, one must be hip, and trendy.

And let’s not even get started talking about the history of nations whose main contribution to world history is genocide and oppression, like the Muslim world.

Another Reason Why Today’s Unions Suck: Dues Devour Wage Increases

26th April 2012

Read it.

In addition to the $369 billion in underfunded union (private-sector) pension plans, the abundant evidence that unions kill companies and destroy jobs, today’s unions are doing such a miserable job at the one thing they’re supposed to do—negotiate contracts—that union members should demand refunds from their union bosses.

Given that union dues for most union members range from around 1.3% to 5% of pay, once union dues are deducted from members’ wages, the negotiated increases unions “achieved” for their members in 2011 are eaten up (and then some) by union dues.

Portland Protects Passengers From Prompt Pickups and Popular Prices

26th April 2012

Three years ago the city of Portland, Oregon, enacted regulations requiring car services to charge at least $50 for airport trips and at least 35 percent more than taxicabs for other trips. The city also requires that car services (limos and sedans) make customers wait at least an hour before picking them up. These consumer-unfriendly rules were expressly designed to shield taxicab companies from competition.

Wherever Democrats rule, freedom and prosperity dies.

Trying to Lead a Whore to Culture

26th April 2012

Taki pulls no punches.

Listening to some European protesters nowadays, one would think that nothing has changed since Pliny’s time. A leftist Oxford professor told me it was the blithe impenitence of the upper class that drives him up the wall. He said they display a demented disregard for common decency’s humblest demands. When I suggested he get real, he called me a fascist, then asked me to buy him a drink.

It began with a healthy challenge to deference from below and became a crisis of nerves from above. The people who belonged to the Establishment, the old authority figures—and by that I don’t mean only lords of the manor and millionaires, but also teachers, religious leaders, and politicians—no longer believe in the ethos that made them what they were. They no longer feel able to uphold traditional values. Parents, bombarded by generations of lifestyle gurus on bringing up their children, simply lost the plot. Respect for one’s elders is now an alien concept.

Dem Hill Aide: Military Training Is ‘Faux’ Training

25th April 2012

Read it.

Last week, Steve Fought, spokesman for Dem Rep. Marcy Kaptur, lashed out at Kaptur’s election opponent, Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, calling him “Joe the Faux Plumber.” Ever since Joe was thrust onto the national stage he’s had to face charges that he isn’t a ‘real’ plumber. The reason Fought and others claim Joe isn’t a “real” plumber? He received his training in the military, not the civilian world.

Unbelievably, as thousands of veterans learn upon discharge every year, the training they receive in the military doesn’t necessarily translate into skills recognized by the civilian world. In Joe’s case, he was a plumber in the Air Force for 4 years achieving a level comparable in the civilian world of a “journeyman”, allowing him to do jobs solo. After discharge, Joe went to the local union and was told that his training didn’t ‘count’ and he’d have to start at the bottom of the ladder.

I’d trust a military-trained plumber over some random union guy.

Rural Kids, Parents Angry About Labor Dept. Rule Banning Farm Chores

25th April 2012

Read it.

A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

Thank you, Mr Community Organizer. Next will be a ruling requiring them to join a union.

The exact range of the missile was not revealed, but retired General Talat Masood, a defence analyst, told AFP intermediate range ballistic missiles could reach targets up to 2,500 to 3,000 kilometres (1,550 to 1,850 miles) away – which would put almost all of arch-rival India within reach.

On Thursday India test fired its long range Agni V missile, which can deliver a one-tonne nuclear warhead anywhere in China.

According to police, Owens fussed at some kids playing basketball in the middle of Delmar Drive about 8:30 Saturday night. They say the kids left and a group of adults returned, armed with everything but the kitchen sink.

Police tell News 5 the suspects used chairs, pipes and paint cans to beat Owens.

Owens’ sister, Ashley Parker, saw the attack. “It was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed.” Parker says 20 people, all African American, attacked her brother on the front porch of his home, using “brass buckles, paint cans and anything they could get their hands on.”

Damn those racist white people! Oh, wait….

What Parker says happened next could make the fallout from the brutal beating even worse. As the attackers walked away, leaving Owen bleeding on the ground, Parker says one of them said “Now thats justice for Trayvon.” Trayvon Martin is the unarmed teenager police say was shot and killed February 26 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Samford, Florida.

Longing for Jobs We Used to Hate

23rd April 2012

Michael Barone calls out the regressives of the Left.

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen liberal commentators look back with nostalgia to the days when a young man fresh out of high school or military service could get a well-paying job on an assembly line at a unionized auto factory that could carry him to a comfortable retirement.

As it happens, I grew up in Detroit and for a time lived next door to factory workers, so I know something that has eluded the liberal nostalgiacs — which is that people hated those jobs. Assembly-line work was boring and repetitive. Management had imbibed Frederick W. Taylor’s theories that workers were stupid and couldn’t be trusted with any initiative.

No worry about anybody in Detroit actually working any more, of course.

The Great California Exodus

22nd April 2012

Joel Kotkin lays out some inconvenient truth.

Mr. Kotkin, one of the nation’s premier demographers, left his native New York City in 1971 to enroll at the University of California, Berkeley. The state was a far-out paradise for hipsters who had grown up listening to the Mamas & the Papas’ iconic “California Dreamin'” and the Beach Boys’ “California Girls.” But it also attracted young, ambitious people “who had a lot of dreams, wanted to build big companies.” Think Intel, Apple and Hewlett-Packard.

Now, however, the Golden State’s fastest-growing entity is government and its biggest product is red tape. The first thing that comes to many American minds when you mention California isn’t Hollywood or tanned girls on a beach, but Greece. Many progressives in California take that as a compliment since Greeks are ostensibly happier. But as Mr. Kotkin notes, Californians are increasingly pursuing happiness elsewhere.

If the goal of the Americans with Disabilities Act was to, uh, disable much of America, it’s an unmatched success.

Indeed, there seems no end to the realms of American life in which this 1990 law inflicts pain, particularly in New York.

This week, The New York Times highlighted one such area: small businesses that are harassed — essentially, shaken down — by lawyers fishing for violations.

It’s a goldmine, of course, for the lawyers who “flood” businesses with lawsuits, ostensibly on behalf of disabled clients they recruit from advocacy groups.

This Week at War: The General’s Dystopia

21st April 2012

Read it.

In a post-industrial era, the correlation between population and military power is sharply reduced. Examples of this transformation abound. Very small countries like Israel and Singapore field military forces far more powerful than their populations would suggest and provide security for themselves in regions with far larger neighbors. Last summer, Special Forces soldiers from the tiny nation of Qatar led the boots-on-the-ground unconventional warfare campaign inside comparatively massive Libya that brought down Muammar al-Qaddafi. Among non-state actors, Hezbollah in southern Lebanon has the military organization and enough sophisticated weapons to rival many states in the region. Mexico’s Sinaloa and Los Zetas drug cartels have the resources and structure to merit consideration as small but troublesome quasi-military organizations.

The falling costs and increased dispersion of militarily useful technology has lowered the barriers for organizations, be they nation-states or non-state actors, to become dangerous military threats. For such potential military powers, acquiring warehouses of small arms, munitions, and equipment is merely an afterthought. Anti-aircraft and anti-ship guided missiles, once only for major military powers, are now available for sale or fabrication from commercial components. The dispersion and cheap access to technology applies not only to munitions but also to supporting components such as optics, night vision sensors, communications and navigation devices, and electronic warfare equipment — areas where the Pentagon has invested enormous sums over past decades. The advantages U.S. forces formerly gained from those investments are now fleeting, a consequence of the falling costs and increased dispersion of such technology.

Occupy Facebook Page Touts Anti-Semitic Cartoon

19th April 2012

Read it.

As Michael Moynihan points out, it could have been drawn by Julius Streicher.

And once again we see proof that Jonah Goldberg was right, that the left is merely fascism in a Clever Plastic Disguise.

UN Monitors Flee Protest When Assad Forces Open Fire

Read it. And watch the video.

The major difference between U.N. monitors and rabbits is that rabbits make a nutritious meal.

EPA Prices Americans Out of Car Market

18th April 2012

Read it.

A recent report released by the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) found that if EPA regulations are implemented, we can expect to see 7 million car buyers drop out of the new vehicle market by 2025.  According to the EPA, the new rules concerning the fuel economies of these vehicles will increase the average cost of these passenger cars and small trucks by $3,000.

Your tax dollars at work.

Although some say that these more fuel efficient vehicles will help prices at the pump, the point is moot  since many Americans will be unable to obtain these cars.

Hey, if you can’t buy a car, you aren’t burning gas. If you’re not burning gas, you’re not causing unclean air AND you’re walking, which improves your health. Win-win, right? Thank you, Unka Barry.

Obamacare in Action? Private Practice Shuts Down Citing ‘New Regulations’

18th April 2012

Read it.

Boiling Springs Family Medicine wrote to their patients that, presumably because of the regulations they would have to comply with under Obamacare, they would “no longer be able to provide you with medical care,” and “it is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you” of the closing.

The private practice wrote that “the challenges of practicing primary care medicine independently in today’s world and economy are too great” and “new guidelines and regulations have made the practice of medicine as we know it impossible as independent practitioners.”

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

Of course, liberals who espoused Obamacare had to know that private practices such as Boiling Springs Family Medicine would close, forcing more citizens to be dependent on government for their health care.

Your tax dollars at work.

Leftist Group Leaks Confidential IRS Information

18th April 2012

Read it.

Here’s the problem: The donor information on a 990, which tax-exempt groups are required to file, is meant only for Internal Revenue Service eyes, and revealing it constitutes a felony. In a twist that seems not at all to be coincidental, the HRC is headed by Joe Solomonese, a recently appointed national co-chair of the Obama reelection campaign.

Following a public call by NOM last week for federal investigation into the matter, the documents are no longer available for general viewing on the HRC website. NOM has determined from document analysis that the scanned papers had to have come from within the IRS – meaning there was a high-level security breach, apparently for political purposes, at a government agency to which every citizen of this country routinely entrusts classified information.

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.
