I have a soft spot in my heart for the National Review crowd, but this is just too stupid for words.
Just because Trump says X doesn’t mean that X is true. Nordlinger and the other pearl-clutchers of the Establishment Right have this serious psychological defect that, coming from the right-wing think-tank/opinionator realm, they say what they mean and mean what they say; as a result, they think that anybody who isn’t a Lying Democrat (of which there be many) does (or at least ought to do) the same thing. That’s not Trump. For Trump, what he says is a tool, and any correspondence between what he says, and what actually is, may or may not exist. What Trump says is what he wants you to hear, and that’s all. If you take it for more than that, then you’re a fool and he will play you like Eric Clapton with a guitar.
Trump knows more about what’s going on than you or I or even (gasp) Jay Nordlinger. He has all of the intelligence apparatus of the President of the United States at his disposal. If he does something, there’s a reason for it, and that reason is likely to be far from obvious — so to look at the obvious and recoil is on a par with a cow changing direction because a cowboy is flapping a blanket at it. Nordlinger has locked down his membership in the herd, and I find it very distasteful that supposedly intelligent people are so easily duped.
Jay Nordlinger doesn’t want a real President; he wants somebody Righteous. Ronald Reagan was Righteous. George W. Bush was Righteous. Mitt Romney was Righteous. Nordlinger suffers from the same disease as every SJW in the DemLegHump Media: They want a President who will Signal Virtue with every word he speaks and every act he takes (which is why they loved Obama so much). This is why the National Review crowd would rather have a Republican Presidential candidate who is Righteous but loses over one who isn’t and can win.
Trump isn’t Righteous. He has seen Righteous in the business world and has correctly deduced that it is a Loser. Trump is Cunning. As a result, he wins far more often than not. As President, the American people have benefited from the winning along with Trump. That’s why Trump has gotten More Stuff Done from a ‘conservative’ standpoint in two years than Reagan managed to get done in four, and is likely to continue winning.
When it comes to winning, I’ll pick Cunning over Righteous every time. People like Jay Norlinger need to go back to sucking their thumbs and leave governing to those who understand the process and can get the job done.

The requirements of modern journalism are such that if you are writing anything about a state that is not one of the Deep Blue Coast states, you must take the approach of someone from civilization boating down the Zambezi river, observing the natives in their colorful native costumes doing colorful native things. Isn’t that amazing!
And, with respect to Texas, if you can sneak ‘cult’ into the headline somewhere, so much the better.

If you sense a synthetic quality to the outrage greeting the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court by President Trump, you aren’t mistaken. The Women’s March had its statement decrying the apocalypse to be wrought by the nominee before he (or she) was named yesterday. Once the announcement was made, the blank name was to be filled in by the Women’s March functionary. In the event, the functionary did a poor job of executing the task, first forgetting to fill in the blank and then misspelling the nominee’s name.

This piece in Salon, of course, is apologetic in nature and attempts to turn West’s vacuous platitudes into something resembling actual arguments — unsuccessfully, since you can’t make bricks with just cotton wool.
West’s tap-dancing is just a variant of the myriad of folks who explain the fact that socialism has failed every time it’s been tried with the bromide ‘real socialism has never actually been tried’. They feel justified in saying this because they believe, deep down in whatever they use for souls, that (per Marx) there is an inevitable tendency in history toward socialism that will sooner or later result in successful socialism (this is what they mean by being ‘on the right side of history’). So, whenever socialism fails, it’s because it hasn’t really happened yet.
One of the things I find most interesting about this attitude is that Nazis (if you can find one) never say ‘real national socialism has never actually been tried’, nor do fascists (if you can find one that isn’t masquerading as a socialist) say that ‘real fascism has never actually been tried’. Socialists are the only brand of statist that actually stand there bare-faced and say ‘Who are you going to believe, Marx or your lying eyes?’.

It’s almost as if New Yorker readers are profitably assumed to be part of an ideological tribe with as strong territorialist emotions — How dare Bad Guys defile the sacred turf of Berkeley? — as Glasgow soccer hooligans beating tourists from Milan.
But if you were as lucid as, say, Berkeley professor Judith Butler, you’d understand that Good Guys are Good. The masked vigilante Antifa Black Bloc might look like thugs, but they are Our Thugs, and that’s what counts.
Berkeley’s turf is sacred not because of some principle made about Free Speech in the 1960s but because that’s where Our Team beat Your Team. And the fact that Your Team is now appealing to the logic of Our Team’s rationalization of our triumph to contest our control of our turf just proves you are the Bad Guys.

More virtue-signalling by people who aren’t going to suffer from the consequences of the silly thing they advocate.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren called for the abolition of ICE during a rally on Saturday morning. “The president’s deeply immoral actions have made it obvious we need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our morality and that works,” Warren said, according to The Hill.
I would agree that we ought to (not need to) rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, primarily because it is so sclerotic and bureaucratic that it takes damned near forever to immigrate legally, which is a large part of what is motivating people to ‘cut out the middleman’ and immigrate illegally. That bureaucratic tangle has given rise to a vast number of ‘abogados’, lawyers specializing in Working the System for immigrants both legal and illegal, which only makes it worse — when you’ve got a large group whose income depends on the system being difficult, they’re going to be a great stumbling block in the way of making the system less difficult. (Think tax preparers and the tax system.) This is what the slur-term Special Interest is all about.
The great flaw in Warren’s position (and that of those similarly situated) is that ‘replacing ICE’ is not the best, or even a useful, place to start. All of this ‘replace ICE’ blather is just grabbing a complex situation by whatever sticks out farthest and pretending that that’s the handle. These politicians (and the bulk of the ‘protestors’) are good examples of what Scott Adams called ‘child-like thinking’ — like children, they look at the people who are in charge and shout ‘JUST FIX IT’ as if that’s all it took.
The family-separation fracas is a very good example of this sort of thinking in practice: There are very good reasons, often having to do with the safety of the children involved and the proven fact that a lot of these children come north with people who are NOT their parents, for separating them while things are sorted out. But, according to opponents, you should just change everything immediately so that they are not separated — Hey, just sign a piece of paper and everything will be fine. Well, Trump showed them that you ought to be careful what you wish for; he ‘signed a piece of paper’, and whaddaya know, it didn’t fix it. And of course now it’s his fault that the magic didn’t happen.
These people are the intellectual equivalent of a boss who gives you an impossible task and says ‘Just do it.’ The overwhelming urge to Just Do Him speaks to the way people react to such stupidity. Do enough of that and things blow up good and proper, and that’s the direction in which we are headed.
