Democrats have twice impeached Donald Trump in the House and twice failed to convict him in the Senate. They’re angry about failing, and double angry about failing twice. That’s understandable. Nobody likes to fail.
But they’ve now fallen into the trap of letting their anger get the better of their reason and their oaths to uphold the Constitution. The result is a legislative temper tantrum in a bill dubbed the “No Glory for Hate Act.”
The act is petty and petulant, and it inspires a strong temptation to laugh and mock. It is, however, an unconstitutional abuse of power, and that transforms an amusing little fit into a worrisome precedent.
The bill targets “any former President that has been twice impeached”—excuse me while I take a moment to figure out all the presidents that it applies to—and says that no federal funds may be used to commemorate all those presidents.
This is effectively a Bill of Atrtainder, which is specifically prohibited by teh Constitution.

As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, many public schools have been closed for in-person instruction for nearly a year, thanks in large part to resistance from teachers’ unions. Meanwhile, children have been falling behind academically, mentally, and physically — and their families have been scrambling to search for education alternatives because of the traditional public school system’s unwillingness, and in some cases inability, to adapt to change.
The past year has exposed one of the main problems with K-12 education in the United States: there is a long-existing massive power imbalance between the public school monopoly and individual families.

The Phoenix Police Department says a man called for help saying a burglar tried getting into his home, and the incident ended with the caller in handcuffs.
In a social media post on March 1, the department stated, “A man calling to report a possible break-in, finds himself in handcuffs instead. While officers were searching his home for the alleged burglar, they located: 6,000 fentanyl pills, 392 grams of meth, $4,685.”
Be careful what you wish for.

Q: Why is it that only Democrats want D.C. and Puerto Rico to be states?
A; Because they want four more guaranteed Senators.
If they could revoke Alaska’s statehood, I’m sure they would.

Audacious Epigone remarks on the gorilla in the room.
The State of the Union will be a heavily militarized event. Trump was mocked for wanting a military parade through the capital during his term; now Joe Biden is getting a permanent one. The left used to recoil in horror at this sort of militarism. No longer.

Derek Chauvin goes on trial for murder in the death of George Floyd on March 8. His trial has been separated from that of the other three officers who have been charged; theirs will begin in August. Chauvin is the principal defendant. Of the four policemen involved, two were on something like their fourth day on the job. The third was a tiny guy, also not very experienced. Chauvin was the only officer on the scene who had the experience and the strength to deal with an oversized career criminal who was hopped up on drugs, and he took the lead.
I want to see how they argue that somebody can be choked to death by kneeling on the side of his neck.

With Neera Tanden’s nomination in serious trouble, the knives are out for Ron Klain, Joe Biden’s chief of staff. How do we know? Because of the leaking that drives this Washington Post article called “Biden’s chief of staff at center of controversy over White House budget pick.”
Leaking can be a subtle art, but not in this case. One of the leakers told the Post that the Tanden play “was Ron, Ron, Ron, Ron.”
The Democrat Party motto ought to be Nature Red In Tooth And Claw.

Eight Republican Michigan state senators sent letters to acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Wednesday demanding investigations into Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s handling of COVID-19 in the state’s nursing homes.
Residents of Michigan’s long-term care facilities represent 5,549 of the 16,436 suspected and confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the state since the start of the pandemic, according to the state’s latest available reporting. The GOP lawmakers requested Nessel and Wilkinson investigate whether Whitmer’s April 15 executive order, which prohibited nursing homes in most cases from barring admission to residents who were previously hospitalized with the virus, contributed to the death toll.

For years, Big Tech, Hollywood elites, and Democrats in power have stretched their reach to gain unprecedented control over our speech, our culture, and our way of life. From censoring conservative speech on social media to de-platforming a sitting president of the United States, the left has sought to win over public opinion through shaming and smearing the opposition, rather than winning hearts and minds in the battle of ideas.
The current chapter in this larger saga is taking place in the House of Representatives this week. The House just passed H.R. 5, ironically called the “Equality Act.” This bill is a patently unconstitutional assault on religious freedom, which also weakens long-standing civil rights law by equating biological sex with “sexual orientation and gender identity.”
This legislation at its core would take civil rights laws designed to protect classes of people based upon immutable and objective characteristics, and would instead base it upon subjective ideas about gender, and political viewpoints about sexual orientation.

The U.S. Labor Department’s inspector general said this week that roughly $100 million in fraudulent unemployment insurance claims were paid in 2020 to criminals who are already in jail. That’s a tiny share of the estimated tens of billions of dollars in jobless benefits states have given to identity thieves in the past year. To help reverse that trend, many states are now turning to a little-known private company called ID.me. This post examines some of what that company is seeing in its efforts to stymie unemployment fraud.

Two and a half years ago, when Alex Jones of Infowars was kicked off a series of tech platforms in a clearly coordinated decision, I knew this was not going to be an isolated thing.
Given that people like Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy were saying the ouster of Jones was just a “good first step,” it seemed obvious the tactic was not going to be confined to a few actors. But corporate media critics insisted the precedent would not be applied more broadly.

How stupid does a politician have to be to try to shut down their state’s main source of home heating fuel right before winter? They would have to be doubly stupid to do this in a state with real winters, like Michigan. As bad as the Texas energy disaster was, the freezing weather that triggered it only lasted about 10 days.

Republican leaders in the House and Senate say a proposed plan for an independent commission to study the Capitol insurrection is overly tilted toward Democrats, arguing that the panel should have an even party split like the one formed to study the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that a legitimate commission would be comprised of an equal number of Republicans and Democrats. A draft proposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would create an 11-member commission with four Republicans and seven Democrats, three of whom would be chosen by President Joe Biden, according to one of multiple aides who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the details under negotiation.

If you have followed our rogue prosecutor series, no doubt you were disturbed by Boston’s Rachael Rollins and her list of “15 crimes” you can now commit there, appalled at the anti-police policies of Philadelphia’s Larry Krasner, disgusted by the actions of Baltimore’s Marilyn Mosby, nauseated by the weekly death tolls caused by the apathy of Chicago’s Kim Foxx, and disconcerted by the predictable anti-victim policies of Fairfax’s Steve Descano.
The goal of each of these Soros-backed rogue prosecutors, as we wrote in our research paper on the topic, is to “fundamentally reverse engineer” the role of the prosecutor and to fundamentally transform our criminal justice system.
To that end, they have enacted policies that favor defendants, ignore drug laws, prohibit prosecutors from filing certain misdemeanors, and require prosecutors to cut sweetheart deals with many offenders. All of these actions have contributed to spikes in crime (including homicides) in many of their cities and have damaged their relationships with local police and victims’ rights groups. In the end, their policies push them further away from their supposed goal of seeking justice.
Thank you, George Soros.

State legislatures, take note: Americans have legitimate concerns over election integrity, as amply demonstrated by the many proven instances of voter fraud that we continue to add to The Heritage Foundation’s Election Fraud Database.
These vulnerabilities within the electoral process need to be addressed as soon as possible.
The right to self-government depends on free and fair elections. We should have zero toleration for actions that interfere with the choices of voters at the ballot box.
Heritage’s database catalogs 1,311 cases of voter fraud, one of the most recent occurring during the 2020 election.

The Indiana Senate on Tuesday voted 37-8 to pass a bill that would give the government broad powers to seize assets from people suspected of “unlawful assembly,” which, under state law, is defined as “an assembly of five (5) or more persons whose common object is to commit an unlawful act, or a lawful act by unlawful means.”
If that sounds hazy, that’s because it is—perhaps intentionally so. “The one thing we know is that vague laws are often enforced as broadly as they possibly can be,” says Sam Gedge, an attorney at the legal nonprofit Institute for Justice, “and civil forfeiture is often enforced as much as it can be because the government stands to profit.”
That practice—civil forfeiture—is similarly foggy, a fitting accompaniment to unlawful assembly. The process allows the state to steal property and/or cash from people suspected of, charged with, or convicted of a criminal offense, depending on where you live. In Indiana, prosecutors need only to furnish a preponderance of the evidence to initiate forfeiture proceedings. They don’t need a criminal charge, much less a conviction.
