The English linguistic purism movement dates back to the 16th century, and concerned the use of ‘inkhorn terms’, foreign loanwords that repeat existing usage. One of the earliest proponents was Thomas Wilson, who criticised those who ‘seeke so far for outlandish English, that they forget altogether their mothers language’.
One of the most notable campaigners was Victorian poet William Barnes, who wished to replace foreign loan words with Germanic Anglo-Saxon terms he’d made up: genealogy becomes kin-lore, grammar speech-craft and, perhaps less attractive, forceps become nipperlings. He also suggested wortlore for botany, welkinfire for meteor, and sunprint for photograph.
What made Barnes interesting was that he was a noted scholar of foreign languages. Paul Kingsnorth, who takes a keen interest in Old English, described him as ‘a rural boy from Dorset who became a literary figure befriended by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Thomas Hardy. He was a polymath, speaking seven languages and teaching himself mathematics, music and wood engraving. All of this was done from the Dorset village he lived in; his walks in to Dorchester to set his watch by the town clock were the closest he came to metropolitan life.’

A new report published by the House Homeland Security Committee finds that “foreign jihadist networks and homegrown violent extremists” represent a “persistent terror threat to America.”
The committee’s report identifies over 50 cases in 29 U.S. states between April 2021 and September 2024, including dozens of attempts to provide material support to designated Islamist foreign terrorist organizations such as ISIS, Hezbollah, and al-Qaeda, with individuals receiving military-type training from ISIS and Hezbollah as well as committing fraud.
The states with identified jihadist cases include Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Will America’s downtowns recover after the downturn from the global pandemic? Digital technology and working from home have reduced the need for many of America’s workers to make the commute into a busy downtown every day. When employees aren’t heading downtown for jobs, it affects restaurants, retail, and other downtown businesses. Though some American downtowns are rebounding, many have experienced severe population declines in the past 10 years. One American city in particular has reduced its population by nearly 40% in a ten year time span. The population of Albany, Georgia’s downtown has declined by 39.3%.
Albany is 75% black and (of course) run by Democrats, and has what you would expect for crime rate.
Anybody who wonders why their downtown has declined by almost 40% in the last ten years needs to get out more.

Kamala Harris keeps changing her tax plan, but her latest proposal is to raise the corporate tax rate to 28%. She would also raise the top capital-gains tax to roughly 32%, the highest since the 1970s.
Extracting money from those big and faceless corporations with profits in the tens of billions of dollars has populist appeal. But the more accurate way to think of the corporate income tax is that it puts Uncle Sam first in line to take a share of all the profits an American corporation earns. Only after the government takes its pound of flesh does anyone else get a return on his money.
At a 28% federal corporate tax and an average of roughly a 5% state and local tax, the government would snatch away roughly 33 cents of every dollar of profit. This leaves 67 cents to the shareholders. Those include the more than 100 million Americans who own stock directly or through pension and other retirement funds. Every percentage point that Congress and Ms. Harris raise the tax would dilute the value of the stock owned by the rest of us.
Reminder for the dim-witted: Corporations do not pay tax. Corporations merely collect tax. Taxes are an expense to corporations, and (like any other expense) are folded into the price that customers pay for the product or service that the corporation sells. The customer pays ‘corporate’ income tax, and taxing corporations is just another method for government to dip it’s hand into the ordinary citizen’s pocket, something that Democrats have been perfecting since Tammany Hall.

The dean of Michigan State University’s College of Education, Jerlando Jackson, plagiarized extensively over the course of his career, according to a complaint filed with the university on Thursday, lifting text without attribution and raising questions about his fitness to lead one of the top teacher training programs in the country.
The complaint includes nearly 40 examples of plagiarism that span nine of Jackson’s papers, including his Ph.D. thesis, and range from single sentences to full pages. It adds to the allegations of research misconduct already facing the embattled dean, who was a coauthor on several papers implicated in complaints against diversity officials earlier this year, including Harvard University’s chief diversity officer, Sherri Ann Charleston.
“Jackson has failed all ordinary standards of academic honesty,” said Peter Wood, the head of the National Association of Scholars and a former provost at Boston University, where he helped lead plagiarism investigations of faculty and alumni. “As long as he remains as a dean, the university has no legitimate basis to hold students and faculty to basic standards of intellectual integrity.”

Eddie Gallagher knows how it feels to have a target on your back, both on and off the battlefield.
The decorated Navy SEAL, now retired, served his country for more than two decades in combat zones overseas, fighting terrorists who were determined to kill him and harm America. Then, after returning home from his eighth and final deployment in 2017, Gallagher was accused of war crimes, put in the crosshairs of both prosecutors and the media and imprisoned for nearly eight months before his name was cleared.
Now, as co-founder of the Pipe Hitter Foundation, a nonprofit that gives financial and legal support to “veterans, police officers and their families,” Gallagher is raising money to help others fighting similar battles.
Pipe Hitter has gone to bat for other controversial figures like Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, whose 17-year career ended in court-martial in 2021 after he went viral for questioning senior military leadership amid the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. Another is Cmdr. Erik Ramey, a Navy physician who was serving as the senior medical officer at Basic Training Command (BUDs) when Seaman Kyle Mullen died after completing “Hell Week” training in California.

Despite the participants openly calling for the murder of Jews, police officers watched without interrupting, despite having an interpreter on site, according to Apollo News.

The two French essayists Dora Moutot and Marguerite Stern, who are committed to denouncing transgender ideology, were targeted by attacks during a book signing at their publisher’s in Paris on Saturday, October 5th. At the event, 64 far-left activists were arrested by the police, amid a deafening media silence.
For months, the two authors have been hounded by transgender activists who have denounced the publication of their best-selling essay Transmania, in which the two women, coming from the Left and feminist movements, demonstrate the dangerous mechanisms of transgender ideology in society. Their public appearances are hounded to prevent them from holding conferences or presenting their book.
Recently, when they were invited to Lyon by ISSEP, the political science institute founded by Marion Maréchal, they were exposed to violent pressure to cancel their speech. The ISSEP premises were subjected to extensive material damage as a form of intimidation. The conference eventually went ahead but was held under heavy police protection.

Ron Sherman has always had what he considers a typical baby-boomer attitude toward work: You’re loyal to your employer, you give 100%, and you never call out sick unless you really have to — and even then, you might try to push through anyway.
Work, however, has not always had that same attitude toward him. Sherman has been laid off three times in his career: once after his company was bought out, once after his job was shipped overseas (he trained his replacement), and, most recently, after his team at a major cable company was downsized. “Three strikes, you’re out,” he somewhat painfully jokes. The company says age has nothing to do with it and that it was about title, but Sherman, who is 67, notes that everyone who was cut from his team was over 60. As he contemplates whether it’s time to retire, the callousness with which his past employers treated him is making him rethink his give-it-all-on-the-job attitude.
“I was sort of raised that you do a hard day’s work and you’re honest, and things will work out for you — it’s a two-way street between you and your employer,” he says. “But I found out that’s truly not the case.”

On Saturday a 4.5-magnitude seismic event occurred in Iran’s Semnan province, sparking speculation that Iran has tested a nuclear weapon for the first time. Such a seismic event is typically the result of an earthquake, but speculation has arisen on social media suggesting the event was instead an underground nuclear test carried out by the Islamic Republic in response to Israeli threats to bomb Tehran’s nuclear energy and oil facilities.
According to Iranian sources speaking with The Cradle, the possibility that a nuclear test was indeed conducted is being discussed at high levels in Iran. Syrian sources speaking with The Cradle in September predicted that Iran would seek to develop breakout nuclear weapons capability in response to Israel’s assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
Iran launched at least 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, causing damage to three airbases on October 1, following Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforushan on September 27. Iran is now awaiting a possible Israeli response.

Huffington Post. (Yeah, I know, but I’m trying to make a point here.)
Is a five-year age gap in a relationship a little untoward? What about a three-year gap?
On social media, Gen Zers–at least those who are chronically online–are constantly debating the ethics of age gaps. Even if some relationships are perfectly legal, that doesn’t necessarily make them ethical, many say.
“Untoward” and “Ethical” are the new “I don’t like it so you have to quit doing it”.
It’s little wonder then that age-disparate relationships are cause for so much conversation: Having grown up alongside the #MeToo movement, Generation Z is well versed in unbalanced power dynamics and the language of consent. And lately, there’s been plenty of celebrity pairings to interrogate.
“Power dynamics.” “Language of consent.” “Interrogate”. Let’s see how much Woke pseudo-intellectual jargon we can cram into one sentence, shall we?
There’s the obviously icky examples, like the recent, short-lived romance between Aoki Lee Simmons — Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons’ 21-year-old daughter — and restaurateur Vittorio Assaf, 65. Earlier this month, viral photos showed the pair flouncing around on vacation in St. Barts.
“Icky” is the new “unethical”. Whatever it actually is cannot withstand how somebody feels about it. It’s all about the feels. A 21-year-old obviously has no agency; she has to be protected from herself by Older And Wiser Heads (excepting Vittorio; he’s TOO old). (Of course, it doesn’t count how “icky” a transgender weirdo might be; your feels must Get With The Woke Agenda.)
Yes, they’re both consenting adults, but it was still unseemly, critics said.
“Unseemly.” It’s all about how critics feel; your choices must bend to their prescriptions. (Of course, these are the first people to celebrate Cardi B and Miley Cyrus being “unseemly” in public; You Go Girl trumps everything.)
So the discomfort around these types of relationships isn’t anything new. What is new, according to Lehmiller, is how comfortable Gen Z feels about publicly and vocally disapproving of these relationships ? even on people’s personal Instagram pages. (Aaron and Sam Taylor-Johnson recently spoke out against the “bizarre” online judgment they’ve received. Eilish and Rutherford brushed off the criticism from overly concerned fans by dressing up as a baby and an old man one Halloween.)
“To some in Gen Z, age-gap relationships read as being inherently exploitative because they perceive age discrepancies as necessarily creating a power imbalance that favors the older partner,” Lehmiller told HuffPost.
Here is the actual reason: Sexual Market Value.
Men reach their peak Sexual Market Value in their mid 30s; women in their early 20s. Women are evolutionarily wired to prefer older men, who have more experience with life, more confidence, more charm (“rizz”), and more financial resources. Evolutionary psychologists like David Buss have been documenting this FACT for years.
Most of the hate thrown on age-gap relationships comes from women who are past their peak SMV and discover that the men they want, who are their own age or greater, are passing them by in favor of younger women who are still around their peak SMV.
Here’s the sad truth:

Within each cell, inside every nucleus, your survival relies on an intricate and highly complex process. Proteins are continuously wrapping and unwrapping DNA, and even the smallest error in this delicate dance can result in cancer.
A new study from the University of Chicago reveals a previously unknown part of this dance—one with significant implications for human health.
In the study, published Oct. 2 in Nature, a team of scientists led by UChicago Prof. Chuan He, in collaboration with University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Prof. Mingjiang Xu, found that RNA plays a significant role in how DNA is packaged and stored in your cells, via a gene known as TET2. This pathway also appears to explain a long-standing puzzle about why so many cancers and other disorders involve TET2-related mutations—and suggests a set of new targets for treatments.

The womb is a remarkable organ — a muscular, pear-shaped chamber that supports the transformation of a tiny cluster of dividing cells into an entirely new person. All humans begin their lives in this sturdy chamber.
At least for now.
Several research groups are busily developing artificial wombs to replicate the basic life-support functions of the uterine environment for extremely premature infants — that is, babies born at or before 28 weeks of the typical 37-42 week pregnancy.1
At least one group is working on something altogether more radical: a system to grow a fetus from embryo to birth entirely outside the womb, a concept known as ectogenesis. And while currently being developed under the guise of helping to rescue extinct or critically endangered species, such technology could have profound implications for the future of human reproduction.
This is probably inevitable sooner or later. As with the atomic bomb, anything science can show can be done eventually will be done, by somebody; there is no cramming everything back into Pandora’s box.

A lament about the demise of AM radio has been rising in the halls of Congress.
Several automakers, most notably Tesla and Ford, have decided to stop putting AM radios in their electric vehicles. They claim their electric motors interfere with the audio quality of the signal and insist that FM and satellite radio are enough.
Given that people who listen to radio tend to primarily do so while driving, a trend like this could threaten the commercial viability of the over 4,000 AM stations currently broadcasting in the U.S.
Which is why they’re doing it. Every AM station in my area is doubled by an FM sub-station that is typically a few seconds behind it, timing-wise. We don’t need AM radio; anybody who wants to listen to the “AM station” can tune into its FM replica and get the same programming with higher quality sound.
The radio industry has been fighting back, lobbying for legislation that would force carmakers to install AM radios as a matter of public interest.
I.e. fat donations to politicians to mandate an obsolete technology for commercial purposes. Your democracy at work … and play. To paraphrase Samual Johnson, legislation is the last refuge of the uncompetitive.
U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat who sponsored the bill in the Senate, described free AM radio as “an essential tool in emergencies, a crucial part of our diverse media ecosystem, and an irreplaceable source for news, weather, sports, and entertainment for tens of millions of listeners.”
Democrats: Best legislators money can buy. If he wants to support “an essential tool in emergencies”, he ought to support ham radio, which I notice that he doesn’t mention. “Diverse media ecosystem” is Woke-speak for “let’s continue what we’re doing so long as it brings in lobbying money”; there is no such thing as a “media ecosystem”. Nor is it an “irreplaceable source” for anything — people have been listening to FM radio for new, weather, sports, and entertainment since I was a kid in the 1960s. This is just bought-politician boilerplate that fools nobody.
As a media historian, I welcome hearing AM radio described as a public utility, particularly after decades of free-market orthodoxy dominating discussions of its fate.’
In other words, the author is a progressive media shill who is quite happy to see “free-market orthodoxy” displaced by government-regulated behavior under the Clever Plastic Disguise of “public utility”.

Well, duh. We have fluoride in our toothpaste, fluoride rinses, and just try to get through a visit with your dentist without him (or her) pushing a fluoride treatment ( that YOU have to pay for) on you.

Of the images I have not been able to clear from my mind over these past 12 terrible months the most tenacious is that of two young women: one in an elegant hijab, one not, laughing for the camera as they deface a poster of a hostage.

About nine months ago, the WSJ Editor-in-Chief admitted to Davos elites that legacy media outlets no longer had a monopoly on information and narratives. In other words, misinformation and disinformation campaigns to brainwash the masses were no longer working.
“We owned the news. We were the gatekeepers, and we very much owned the facts as well … Nowadays, people can go to all sorts of different sources for the news. And they’re much more questioning about what we’re saying,” WSJ EIC Emma Tucker said.

This title is intentionally a play on the pro-gun faction’s slogan “Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People.” At a certain time before my social awakening, I was appalled by all of the gun violence in the US and elsewhere and therefore believed restricting gun sales and use (through more stringent registration regulations) might be a good idea.
However, I never thought that particular NRA slogan was nonsense as so many of my liberal friends did. It actually rings quite true. Yes, you can still argue (as the leftists do) that if there were not as many guns lying about, people wouldn’t use them to kill other people. To me, that is a rather weak argument.
I have known many gun owners, and I must say as a group they are the most responsible people amongst my friends. The people who use guns to kill others indiscriminately are typically mentally deranged and in need of psychological intervention. So, we either reach out and come up with ways to help these people, or we remove access to guns—for everyone. Which way do you think the agenda believes we should go?
That seems to me equivalent to removing all cars so drunk people don’t have access to them to kill other people with. I know, I know…those who would wish to argue with me would say “Cars have a useful value, guns do not.” It isn’t so much taking away the guns as material objects, it is taking away the right to have them.
