Germany’s Former Spy Chief Arrested for Treason

The former head of Germany’s BND intelligence service has been arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason.
In potentially the most serious spy scandal in German history, August Hanning is suspected of alleged treasonous espionage, the disclosure of state secrets, attempted treason and intelligence activity.

Mr Hanning served as president of the Federal Intelligence Service, or BND, from December 1998 to November 2005.
The prosecutor’s office did not reveal who the men were suspected of spying for.
