You Can Check Out Any Time You Like

Read it.

My nephew lived with us for many years. And then he moved to Arizona for many other years. But the State of California still sent him jury summons. And ballots. I will speak of both.

My ex left CA and 20 years later they tried to collect income taxes. For whatever stupid reason, she didn’t file a tax form for the last partial year she was there. I had an awful time trying to get my hands on the forms and instructions from 20 years back. It ended up that they actually owed her like $14. I wrote the state a letter and explained that they would have owed her money and that they could drop the case and keep the money as a penalty, or they could pay up, or they could forget it because Texas was never going to let them touch her. To my surprise, they ended up dropping it. One would have thought a statute of limitations applied, but CA told me it didn’t. Gray Davis (later governor) was the head of their tax agency when the ex skipped town.
