Teens Who Fail Maths and English GCSEs ‘Should Not Have to Resit’

Teenagers who fail their English and maths GCSEs should not be forced to resit the exams unless they have a “realistic” chance of passing, the Commons education committee has said.
In a report published on Tuesday, the cross-party group of MPs urged the government to introduce three alternative pathways for the thousands of post-16 pupils who do not achieve a grade 4 in these core subjects.
It warned that the policy of mandatory resits was “not serving its purpose”, as more than 80 per cent of pupils who failed at 16 had still not passed by age 19.
It is exactly serving its purpose, which is to ensure that people who have gone through the educational system have actually learned what they were supposed to learn.
