Gother Than Thou: The Most Pretentious Card Game Ever Made is a card game that parodies the goth subculture. It was first published in 2000 by Savant Garde Entertainment. Gother Than Thou appeared on the 2001 Games magazine Games 100 list and was nominated for the “Best Graphic Presentation of a Card Game” category of the 2002 Origins Awards.

The game is played with a deck of 55 cards, which contain three types of Points, which are Goth Points, Sickness, and Money. Every player is dealt five cards. Each player, on their turn, discards one card from their Fate pile, then plays a card into each player’s Fate pile, including their own, finally drawing enough cards to refill their hand.

For each Sickness point a player has, they can hold one less card in their hand. At five points of Sickness, a player Swoons, loses their entire Fate pile, and draws five cards. A player who is not In Debt can draw cards from the discard pile. The first player to twenty Goth points wins.

A saying is making the rounds on social media that captures the European relationship with the state: Europeans love to be governed so much, they’ve even installed a government for their governments in Brussels. It’s a reference to the European Union’s bureaucracy—a sprawling administrative apparatus that is gradually disempowering national governments and shifting the burdens of centralization onto the citizenry.

The latest example: a ruling by the European Court of Justice that weakens the definition of a “safe country of origin,” effectively removing any effective legal instrument EU states might use to stop the overwhelming wave of illegal migration.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he will begin trying to remove Democratic lawmakers from office Monday if they don’t return after dozens of them left the state in a last-resort attempt to block redrawn U.S. House maps that President Donald Trump wants before the 2026 midterm elections.

The revolt by the state House Democrats, many of whom went to Illinois or New York on Sunday, and Abbott giving them less than 24 hours to come home ratcheted up a widening fight over congressional maps that began in Texas but has drawn in Democratic governors who have floated the possibility of rushing to redraw their own state’s maps in retaliation. Their options, however, are limited.

Four years later, Abbott is taking a far more aggressive stance and swiftly warning Democrats that he will seek to remove them from office if they are not back when the House reconvenes Monday afternoon. He cited a non-binding 2021 legal opinion issued by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, which suggested a court could determine that a legislator had forfeited their office.

He also suggested the lawmakers may have committed felonies by raising money to help pay for fines they’d face.

“This truancy ends now,” Abbott said.

It is not clear to me what legal basis there would be to remove them from office aside from impeachment. The U.S. House of Representatives can expel a member, but Adam Clayton Powell demonstrated that if constituents support a member in being an asshole, there isn’t much that a legislative body can do about it in the short term. I’m not sufficiently knowledgeable about Texas politics to say what options there might be, nor am I sufficiently interested to put any time in researching it; things will happen as they happen.

Facing sharp scrutiny from the Trump administration over perceived left-wing bias, the Smithsonian Institution said Friday that it had temporarily removed a display on President Donald Trump’s two politically motivated impeachments.

The ultimate fate of the display remained uncertain for the foreseeable future, although a Smithsonian spokesperson maintained that the National Museum for American History’s exhibit on the American presidency eventually “will include all impeachments,” the Associated Press reported.

Smithsonian spokesman Phillip Zimmerman said the decision to restore the exhibit to its previous 2008 state stemmed from a need to update some of the details following a review in July of the museum’s “legacy content.”

The temporary installation on Trump that was added in September 2021 “was intended to be a short-term measure to address current events at the time,” he said.

Monasteries are built to last not for decades or even centuries, but for millennia. A monastery is meant to remain there and make that place holy, and that is the reason why monasteries were so successful in the creation of Christendom. But consecrated life, or what the Church calls ‘religious life’—that is, life lived under special vows—underwent big changes. Those changes came about due to the adaptation of religious life in the face of moments of crisis. But in the long run, such changes probably had unhelpful consequences. The consequences to which I refer slowly changed the Christian Faith from the permanent form of a concrete and settled way of life, to a set of intangible ideas or propositions which one either agreed with or one did not.

Settled monastic orders in the Latin Church refer to their abbey as their “stability” for a reason.

The appearance of the friars marked a revolutionary change in which these new ‘monks’—free from the vow of stability—no longer remained in monasteries. They did not stay in one place to transform the area in which they’d settled, consecrating it down the centuries. These friars were on the move, wandering and preaching, turning up in cities and then disappearing again years later. They established lasting priories, but the friars moved between those priories constantly. The friars were to have no lasting attachment to a particular place and its surrounding landscape. What is more, rather than seeing this change in the Church as an unfortunate innovation necessitated by a passing crisis, new celebrity friars—including someone as influential as St. Thomas Aquinas—argued that their way of life marked the perfection of all religious life, combining as it did both contemplative and apostolic life, whereas monks were ‘disadvantaged’ by being contemplatives alone, so Aquinas argued.

By this change in the conception of a ‘consecrated person,’ the Church was set on a trajectory that ultimately unwound its mission centuries later. The friars were not farmers, artisans, and traders; they were full-time missionaries. They would come, render the faithful orthodox with their preaching, and leave. In this way, the definition of the Christian tacitly changed from a ‘liturgical person’ to a ‘person who accepts certain propositions.’ The Faith, without anyone noticing, slowly changed from the existential transfiguration of human nature and the ongoing transformation of human culture to a set of formulae requiring assent. In short, the threads of rationalism, which would later deconstruct the Church and her mission, were sewn into her most holy organ, namely the consecrated life of her religious orders.

Being a Christian changed from “what one did” to “what one believed”. Unfortunately, faith without works is dead.

The body, now known as the National Security and Online Information Team (NSOIT) has been lobbying social media companies such as TikTok to take action against users who post what it describes as “concerning narratives” about immigration and ‘two tier policing’.

The unit operates within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and was previously known as the ‘Counter Disinformation Unit’ during the pandemic.

It suggests that we have here an examination of a world in which ‘extreme wealth were impossible”, whereas it actually discusses a world in which “we make extreme wealth impossible”, which is a different kettle of fish. (“Journalists”, of course, have grown expert at this sort of prestiverbitation.)

Throughout history human societies (and ideological groups within those societies) have attempted to impose their notion of The Good Life on their fellows, and pretend that it is somehow based in reality. They may even believe it. Reality, however, is what happens while you’re dreaming your dreams, and it doesn’t go away just because you imagine things to be a different than they actually are.

Also noticeable is the fact that it is written by a woman, as exemplified by its “FebBot ‘journalism”: Start with a tear-jerking anecdote designed to tell people How To Feel about the situation, then elide smoothly into a lecture based on the confident assumption that the audience will be ready to accept the not-too-hidden political agenda of the author as demonstrated fact, when in fact it is Just Another Story.

The significance of this is rooted in evolutionary psychology. Human beings evolved, both physically and socially, to be nomadic hunter-gatherers, and each sex evolved to fill distinct roles: men are the breadwinners, and women are the homemakers. We didn’t choose these roles–natural selection chose them for us, and wired our “firmware” to support them. As a result, men organize their social groups hierarchically, and women organize their social groups collectively. The hunt requires clear chains of command and structures of authority, because everybody needs to know precisely who’s in charge and where he fits in ongoing operations. Gathering (and nurturing babies) require cooperative work, pooling of resources, and firm social bonds among participants. Historically, men keep trying to make all of society hierarchical and women keep trying to make all of society collectivist. Both sides think that their way is the right way and the other way is the wrong way.

From the beginning of the species down to about the early 18oos, men typically won this particular conflict, because breadwinning was hard–until the coming of industrialization, built upon the invention of portable non-muscular power sources, made “breadwinning” something so easy that even women could do it. This, coupled with hormonal birth control, made the “homemaker” role on the part of women completely voluntary, with the inevitable impact on marriage rates and population growth.

Since a considerable portion of the “breadwinning community” is now composed of women, hardwired to prefer collectivism over hierarchy, we see “wealth inequality”, the social expression of hierarchy, being denigrated in favor of “egalitarianism”, the social expression of collectivism.

Go back and read the article again through that lens, and things become a lot clearer.

Note that the Starting Anecdote is about a rich woman, whose money came from her breadwinner husband, sharing that money with an institution for the collective benefit of a certain group of people, for which she is praised, mostly by other women. Female collectivism on the hoof.

Note that the supposed ill effects of “wealth inequality” are nowhere demonstrated except by some vague handwaving (by a female professor). The author writes in the sure and certain confidence that her feelings-based politically-correct-instructed audience will tag along dutifully and unquestioningly. The plain historical record that collectivism, on a scale larger than a nuclear family, has failed, always and everywhere, is simply ignored. And ignoring reality is what collectivists do best. And we are all doomed to suffer as a result.

When asked how far the US government has plunged into the red, many fiscally-conscious Americans will tell you the national debt has reached $37 trillion. As distressing as that official number is, America’s true fiscal situation is even worse — far worse. According to a barely-publicized Treasury report, the actual grand total of Uncle Sam’s obligations is more than $151 trillion.

That huge discrepancy springs from the fact that the federal government doesn’t hold itself to the same accounting standards it imposes on businesses. Rather than using accrual accounting — which recognizes expenses when they’re incurred — our Washington overlords self-servingly use simple cash accounting, only recognizing expenses when they’re paid. As a result, discourse on federal obligations solely focuses on the national debt, comprising Treasury bills, notes and bonds.

Once a year, however, an obscure report delivers a more accurate version of Uncle Sam’s balance sheet. While it receives almost no attention from journalists or public officials, the Treasury Department is required to submit an annual report to Congress detailing the government’s financial condition. Critically, the 1994 law compelling this report mandates that it reflect “unfunded liabilities” — that is, commitments made without any dedicated assets or income streams to ensure they’ll be kept.

Administrative Law is sufficiently significant that I was able to take a course by that title in law school in the 80s.

Every day the news brings word of edicts handed down from on high by rulers whose names we have never heard of or voted for. I mean the heads of the various administrative agencies that control every corner of our lives.

Administrative law is not an inherently interesting subject. You may not be interested in administrative law, but administrative law is interested in you. William F. Buckley, Jr. used to say that “a liberal is someone who is determined to reach into your shower and adjust the water temperature for you.” That was in the good old days, when we thought the threat was subject to direct political control. What once was a jape is now the law. Since Buckley spoke federal regulators have extended their hands into every aspect of the home bathroom, including toilets and, yes, shower heads.

Philip Hamburger is the Maurice & Hilda Friedman Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. In 2014 Hamburger published his monumental treatise Is Administrative Law Unlawful? In this post I am adapting the review I wrote for National Review.

Professor Hamburger observed that, although administrative law is unrecognized by the Constitution, it “has become the government’s primary mode of controlling Americans.” He further noted, however, that “administrative law has avoided much rancor because its burdens have been felt mostly by corporations.” That is changing: “Increasingly, however, administrative law has extended its reach to individuals. The entire society therefore now has opportunities to feel its hard edge.”

Well, it’s not anymore. A two-bedroom house in Bramerton Street will, for the moment, set you back over three million pounds, but no one except a gibbering lunatic would advance the proposition that today’s Britain is “the most eminently civilised society on earth”. England particularly is increasingly what Trump would call a bleephole – very literally. When its remnants finally go up in flames fifteen years (at most) from now, you’ll strain to believe that it could ever have been as Lerner characterised it.

At the end of April, an Afghan family contacted the local employment center in Hamburg. The parents and their five children, as a needy household, applied for Bürgergeld, the citizens’ benefit paid when people have no income or do not earn enough money to support themselves and their dependents. According to official documents obtained by German investigative portal Nius, the employment center approved monthly payments of €6,733.83 from June to November 2025, with an increase to €6,814.83 starting in January 2026. Of this amount, approximately €5,100 is earmarked for Fördern und Wohnen, the city-owned social enterprise that runs the refugee accommodation where the family currently resides.

According to Nius, the Afghan family in question receives substantial state welfare support while its members run a chain of Middle Eastern grocery stores in Berlin and Hamburg. The head of the Hamburg family appears to be working at one of the supermarkets owned by members of his extended family. Raising further questions, two adult members of the household regularly flaunt expensive cars and watches on social media, posting hashtags such as “rich” and “Dubai.” The father apparently also poses on Facebook as an “entrepreneur” who visited Istanbul a few months ago.

Hares are mammals belonging to the genus Lepus. They are herbivores and live either in pairs or alone. They nest in slight depressions, which are known as ‘forms’, and their young, known as leverets, are able to fend for themselves shortly after birth.

Hares are very different from rabbits. For one, they are generally much bigger than rabbits, and they have longer ears and more powerful, longer legs. They can reach speeds of up to 40mph when evading predators. Their habitats also vary considerably, with hares preferring open areas such as fields and grasslands, while rabbits are often found in shrubby areas where they create burrows called warrens.

With rare exceptions, most of the articles about the Trump administration’s science-funding policies have discussed them in catastrophic terms.

Because, as we all know, no science was ever done prior to it being the TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY of the U.S. government–and the U.S. taxpayer.

A professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has called cuts to research funding the “apocalypse of American science.” Critics believe this will sound the death knell of the American economy and our scientific leadership. Despite this widespread condemnation, the administration shows no signs of changing course. The most recent estimate suggests that basic research endowments will fall by US$15 billion in 2026.

Just think of all those ‘research scientists’ having to go out and get a Real Job.

These claims are worth examining in more detail. For a start, the best available evidence does not demonstrate that federal science funding predicts economic growth. This claim has been evaluated multiple times, sometimes decades apart. In 1989, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) audited R&D investments and determined that federally financed research was having no significant effect on the economy. The Congressional Budget Office reached the same conclusion during its assessment in 1998. Another BLS audit in 2007 found that: “Returns to many forms of publicly financed R&D are near zero.”

International audits have returned similar results. In the late 1990s, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) looked at economic growth differences between countries, and reported their findings in 2003. The OECD could find “no clear-cut relationship between public R&D activities and growth.”

Even if the analysis is restricted to the “golden era” of NIH funding in the 1950s and 1960s, the effect on US growth is suspect. Given the massive public investment at that time, subsequent years should have demonstrated more rapid economic growth. But they did not. The annual growth rate of GDP after the 1950s was fairly stable. Terence Kealey has noted that total factor productivity (TFP) and other measurements that account for technological change fell in the post WWII era as federal science budgets expanded.

The PBS News Hour’s bizarre post-October 7 enmity toward Israel has blared bright the last few days, eager to portray Israel, fighting for existence against a soulless enemy, Hamas, as a cruel invader purposely starving Gaza’s infants. This is the “public television” that claims to be a public service.

PBS’s coverage of late has been guilty of bias by omission, spewing phony figures and hunger anecdotes from the Hamas-controlled “Health Ministry” entity — while usually leaving out the Hamas affiliation. References to the hostages still cruelly held by Hamas were sparse.

One would think the New York Times publishing mortifying misinformation (a front-page photo on Friday of a “starving” child in Gaza who was actually suffering an unrelated medical condition) would inject a little humility into the legacy press’s assumptions of starving children in Gaza.

Guest host Lisa Desjardins opened Saturday’s News Weekend by leaving off the fact that the terrorist group controls the Gaza Health Ministry while skipping mention of the twenty or so hostages assumed to still be alive, being held by Hamas.

For many years, large segments of the American public were perfectly willing to go on Jerry Springer and admit to the world that they abused their spouses, molested their children, tortured their pets, and consumed every illicit drug they could get their hands on. Beginning with Alcoholics Anonymous, a plethora of Anonymous organizations has come on the scene to deal with these issues, along with an ever-increasing number of other social and psychological maladies. However, there is not one Anonymous chapter where a person can get in front of a supportive group and state: “Good evening. My name is Steve, and I’m stupid!” Don’t believe me? Google it!

The Department of Justice has been tightening the noose around the Vera Institute of Justice, a leftist, billionaire-backed nonprofit that has long acted as a shield for illegal aliens. The DOJ has slashed millions in taxpayer funding to the rogue nonprofit, which is reportedly operating a real-time alert system designed to track ICE raids and warn criminal illegal aliens to avoid certain areas and evade arrest.

By now, the DOJ has likely seen, or at least we can hope, the latest undercover investigation by James O’Keefe’s team, which features a secretly recorded interview with Santiago Mueckay, associate director of Vera’s Advancing Universal Representation initiative.

In the footage, Mueckay openly admits to the undercover reporter that leftist billionaires are bankrolling Vera’s operations.

“It’s usually like foundations, like the Gates Foundation, or Jeff Bezos, or some of these huge philanthropists, who have millions of dollars,” Mueckay said in the video.

Mueckay shared information with the reporter that points to Vera creating a database monitoring ICE trends nationwide to alert criminal illegal aliens about impending raids.

One of the major flaws in any scheme of government-provided (i.e. taxpayer-provided) health care is that it is heavily weighted toward “the poor” (i.e. people who don’t produce any value to society except votes for the Party of Free Stuff) and turns access to health care from an economic endeavor to a political favor that regime apparatchiks can grant or withhold on their whim.

There never was a Russian collusion conspiracy. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser sued Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputy Alexander Zwinck last week after Zwinck reportedly sent federal agents information about a student present in the U.S. illegally, The Associated Press first reported.

Zwinck and another deputy, Erik Olson, have also been placed on unpaid leave; Zwinck for three weeks and Olson for two weeks.

On June 5, Zwinck is reported to have pulled Caroline Dias-Goncalves over for a traffic stop. The officer gave Dias-Goncalves, a college student from Brazil with an expired visa, a warning but shortly after, federal immigration officers stopped Dias-Goncalves and arrested her.

A Mesa County Sheriff’s Office internal investigation found that Zwinck and Olson were a part of a Signal group chat that included Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Both deputies are reported to have used the Signal chat to relay information to federal officers.

On July 3rd, a Kosovar Muslim man, identified as Mirsad H., set his wife, Dula K., on fire in the Belgian village of Houthalen-Helchteren after being released from incarceration months early due to prison overcrowding. The attack happened in front of the couple’s five children, one of whom tried to extinguish the flames while waiting for help to arrive. The woman is now in a medically induced coma, fighting for her life, with her chances of survival minimal according to the doctors treating her.

Mirsad H. was previously known to the police, having amassed a considerable rap sheet including illegal possession of a weapon and receiving stolen goods. Before the horrific attack on his wife, he had been serving a 37-month prison sentence for domestic violence.

Despite his ample criminal record and propensity for violence against his wife, the man was granted conditional release by the Hasselt prison administration, based on an “emergency measure” implemented by former Belgian justice minister Paul Van Tigchelt to tackle overcrowding in the prison system. Current justice minister Annelies Verlinden has since called the measure illegal and vowed to end it.

The man is now facing charges of attempted murder and is expected to be tried before the Assize Court.
