Place Where Biden Face-Planted Off Bike Is Named ‘Brandon Falls’ on Google Maps

19th July 2022

Read it.

Someone has managed to place a landmark in the Delaware location, naming it after the infamous ‘Lets go Brandon’ chant, which was initiated after the White House claimed Nascar fans were not chanting ‘F*ck Joe Biden’ when they totally were.

At time of writing, ‘Brandon Falls’ is still listed as a ‘historical landmark’ on Google Maps.

Now that’s comedy.

Cognitive Distortions

19th July 2022

Read it.

In June 2018, the book Modern American Extremism and Domestic Terrorism published a false and defamatory statement about a living person, copied from a piece of Wikipedia vandalism. The statement was a fabricated quote about Linda Gottfredson, a psychologist known for her opposition to racial affirmative action policies, which compared her views in this area to Nazism. In an article published in the Critic in October 2020, I reported that an original source for this quote does not exist, and that the vandalism had remained in the Wikipedia biography for nearly two years—long enough for an academic book to repeat the hoax.

This was not an isolated case. Wikipedia hoaxes about topics including recently deceased people, South American wildlife, Middle Eastern cuisine, and hair products have all come to be regarded as “accepted knowledge” if they remained on the site for a sufficient period of time, and in many cases the false information was repeated in reputably published books or newspapers. The influence of Wikipedia hoaxes has also extended to papers published in academic journals. For example, a Wikipedia hoax describing a fictitious medical condition known as “glucojasinogen” went on to be discussed in several medical journals as though it were a real condition.

Pro-Abortion Extremist Democrats Push to Extend ‘Sanctuaries’ Nationwide

19th July 2022

Read it.

Last week, leftist senators introduced the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act of 2022. Led by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., the bill is a response to the claim that “radical” pro-life states might pass laws prohibiting women from traveling across state lines for an abortion.

But the bill is a solution in search of a problem.

Prohibiting such travel would clearly violate the Constitution. A state has the right to decide whether it will protect unborn life, but it has no right to impose its own laws on another state or limit the travel of its residents.

If you look for a definition of “Karen”, you find a picture of Patty Murray.

CDC Health Emergency Extension Could Be the Least of Our Problems

19th July 2022

Read it.

Is anyone surprised that the CDC has extended the public health emergency regarding COVID-19 for 90 more days? Of course, their “reasoning” is that cases are once again increasing; 95,000 new cases are being reported daily, and hospitalizations are “beginning to increase again.” At this point, I frankly do not care about these results: COVID is going to COVID, and what in the world does it mean that hospitalizations are “beginning to increase”?

What does this extended declaration tell us?

Trying to keep the PANIC going….

After the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told fans at a London concert that he would renounce his citizenship. Don’t bet on it.

Armstrong is no stranger to preening wokeness. He also “threatened” to leave the U.S. when President Trump was in charge, as did many other lefty celebs—Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, Lena Dunham and Cher, to name but a few. Yet, curiously, they’re all still here.

NPR Claims Dino Emojis Belong to Trans People, Tucker Mocks Them

18th July 2022

Read it.

As frequent viewers of Tucker Carlson Tonight on the Fox News Channel are aware, Carlson has a recurring segment where he exposes how insane NPR has gotten over the years. No longer are they simply a monotone liberal public radio station, but now simply a woke leftist outlet that sits around and rails against the United States and its founding while finding things to be offended over.

The latest installment of Carlson’s “what happened to NPR” segment came Friday night when Carlson aired soundbites of a June NPR segment claiming dinosaur emojis belong to the transgender community and if you use them that makes you transphobic.

“We’re All Dutch Farmers Now!”

18th July 2022

Read it.

For weeks now, farmers in the Netherlands have been engaging in fierce protests over their government’s plan to halve the country’s nitrogen and ammonia pollution by 2030. It is estimated that this plan—which will mandate emissions cuts of 95% in some provinces—will require a 30% reduction in livestock and will drive many of the nation’s farmers out of business.

The protests have been remarkably heated, as tens of thousands take to the streets to block the country’s highways, torch bales of hay and spread manure around politicians’ homes. In one incident, Dutch police actually fired live rounds on one of the protesters as he attempted to breach the police line with his tractor.

Yes, the scenes coming out of the usually quiet Dutch countryside are shocking. But they should not be. They are just the early stages of a great worldwide battle that is shaping up between the free people of the world and the technocrats, who are starting to clamp down on them in the name of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Enslavement.

Calculus of Compliance

18th July 2022

Read it.

Current American popular culture eerily demands the same behavior of ordinary Americans as Havel’s hypothetical greengrocer. Whether you’re putting on a face mask before entering a grocery store or stringing up a pride flag for the month of June, Americans are signaling their conformity to the whims of the ruling class. Whether they’re actually an ally or think masks are effective is irrelevant. Like Havel’s greengrocer, all that matters is their desire to show that they’re team players. The only difference is that it is the retaliation of social media mobs rather than NKVD agents that citizens fear now.

Anthropologists Call for an End to Classifying Human Remains by Gender and Ancestry

18th July 2022

Johnathan Turley, Voice of the Crust.

There is an interesting controversy brewing in anthropology departments where professors have called for researchers to stop identifying ancient human remains by biological gender because they cannot gauge how a person identified at that the time. Other scholars are calling for researchers to stop identifying race as a practice because it fuels white supremacy.

I am not making this up.

Mass Shooter at Indiana Mall Killed by Armed “Good Samaritan” Civilian

18th July 2022

Read it.

A man with a rifle walked into an Indiana mall and opened fire in a food court Sunday evening. A law-abiding citizen with a permit to carry a handgun responded in seconds and was able to shoot and kill the suspect, ending the rampage.

The Greenwood Police Department said a lone suspect entered the food court area of the Greenwood Park Mall, located on Highway 31 on the south side of Indianapolis, around 1800 local time. The suspect was armed with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition and immediately began firing. He was identified as an adult male, and police have yet to release a motive.

The suspect killed three people and injured two during the rampage but was stopped short by a 22-year-old man carrying a gun lawfully. Police have not shared the man’s name, but local authorities are already calling the citizen who stopped the shooter a “real hero.”

Are We Looking at Another Civil War?

18th July 2022

Read it.

The logic of the left accepts political violence. A few years ago, one of its acolytes tried to wipe out the congressional Republican caucus on a softball field; last month, another member of the MSNBCNN target demo tried to off Justice Kavanaugh for somewhat limiting the ability of progressives to conveniently kill babies. Even the reaction to the recent molestation of the famously beer-ophilic jurist as he nibbled on a rib-eye at Morton’s in DC was indicative – this personal confrontation was celebrated by the left instead of decried. What’s the logical limit when you sign onto the idea that one can legitimately influence politics via the personal intimidation of officials placed in office by our agreed constitutional procedures? If you can get in his face, why can’t you slap it? Or put a bullet in it? If there is a boundary, the left is not setting it.

Why Companies Are Conservative

18th July 2022

Read it.

I mentioned in a previous posting that most companies have very conservative values because the liberal companies go bankrupt fairly quickly. You can’t run a company on the basis of your social justice values – your employees will walk all over you. In theory, it is a great idea to be “nice” to your employees and grant them all sorts of benefits and perks, but the biggest pushback you will get is not from the shareholders or management, but from the employees themselves. People want strong leadership and being “nice” is seen as being weak.

This from a bona-fide Leftist.

Concrete Columns Cracked

18th July 2022

Read it.

The first phase of the Honolulu rail transit system is supposed to open at the end of this year, with trains serving nine of the planned 21 stations. But those plans may be put on hold because contractors have discovered cracks in the concrete pillars holding up the elevated stations. Due to these cracks, the consultants have “advised that passengers not be allowed into the seven affected stations until further inspections are done.”

This is just the latest in a long line of snafus over the Honolulu transit project. These include wheels that turned out to be too narrow for the rails they are to run on, electric power that is likely to disrupt nearby homes and businesses, and a 140 percent cost overrun. Current plans call for the project to be finished a mere 11 years late, but that’s optimistic.

Breaking Free From China?

17th July 2022

John Hinderaker at Power Line.

We have been writing for a long time about the fact that transitioning from fossil fuels to wind and solar energy is catastrophically bad policy, not only because those forms of energy are intermittent and therefore inadequate, but also because China dominates the market for wind turbines and solar panels. Going “green” means turning over our economy–our lives–to the Chinese Communist Party.

This issue has been a dark secret if you rely on liberal news outlets for information, but now a glimmer of reality seems to be breaking through. I haven’t seen this reported domestically, but the Guardian has the story: “Breaking from China’s clean energy dominance ‘imperative’, US and Australia say after new climate tech deal.”

Perovskites are semiconductors with a special crystal structure that makes them well suited for solar cell technology. They can be manufactured at room temperature, using much less energy than silicon, making them cheaper and more sustainable to produce. And whereas silicon is stiff and opaque, perovskites can be made flexible and transparent, extending solar power well beyond the iconic panels that populate hillsides and rooftops across America.

Love Song to Costco

While my parents and their friends peruse the enormous shelves, I prowl the sample stands. This is one of the only times I get to eat American food. My parents don’t patronize American restaurants out of a combination of fear and disdain. For a while at lunch I was dumping out the fried rice my mother cooked because the white kids said it looked funny, but I quickly ran out of allowance money to buy chicken nuggets.

I make a beeline for the old ladies in hairnets doling out cut-up Hot Pockets or lone nachos with salsa. More than anything, I lust after the microwavable cheese-filled pierogies. “Trash food,” my mother calls them. I tell her that I aspire to be a trash can.

Taking Down the Woke Agenda

17th July 2022

Read it.

No part of our culture has been immune from the disease of woke-ism. Whether one studies corporations, educational institutions, the media, federal and state governments, woke-ism has corrupted every part of our culture to one degree or another. When I contemplate how to even begin to break its hold on our country, that proposition appears overwhelming. Where to start? How to make legitimate inroads? How to get an informed audience to consider the issues and make changes?

UK: We Can Do Better Than the NHS

17th July 2022

Read it.

Since Covid, the NHS has struggled to return to normal. Whilst it is now seeing patients at a pre-pandemic level, the pressure is being described by senior figures as being at crisis level. If things are this bad in the summer months, the annual winter crisis — a national ritual not observed in many other first-world countries — will be much more serious still.

We should not let these acute crises obscure the fact that the Health Service systematically underperforms on key metrics: for example, it is below average internationally when it comes to preventing death from heart attacks, strokes, cancer and lung disease.

Despite this, it is fast becoming an unsupportable drain on the public finances. According to the King’s Fund, the NHS budget for England ran to £190.3 billion in 2021/22. Even before Covid, Health Service spending amounted to 7.2 per cent of GDP. By 2024, healthcare is projected to consume 44 per cent of day-to-day government spending, up from just 27 per cent in 2000.

All this despite the fact that more and more Britons are turning to the private healthcare market. Our out-of-pocket spending on medical bills is now almost on a par with America, an extraordinary failure considering that we have a high-tax, low-growth economy, with lower than average wages while forking out for universal provision.

The British NHS is the poster child for government-provided health care, and a potent reminder that the people on the left side of the IQ curve will cling to something that’s free even when it is demonstrably bad.

This is the future that the Obamacare Left want us to have.

Today in Statism: How To Tax Cloud Computing?

17th July 2022

Read it.

Taxing cloud computing is not my idea. It’s billionaire Mark Cuban’s idea. I first learned about it during his interview on the Pomp Podcast, then again in another interview with POLITICO.  It’s a potentially profound idea that’s worth a deeper exploration and thoughtful discussion.

There aren’t a whole lot of details around it. Cuban’s proposal is a “2% cloud tax”. The motivation, I believe, is to use the tax revenue to fund long-term economic recovery from COVID-19, as well as evening the playing field between the hyper-scale cloud computing platforms and other less technically sophisticated businesses, especially in AI. These cloud platforms are often called “digital landlords” and for good reasons. The tech giants who built these hyper-clouds have massive advantages in building AI products and services that will continue to displace workers, who rely on low or predictable skills in both blue and white-collar industries.

So how do we tax the cloud in a way that does even the playing field but does not discourage innovation? Assuming 2% is the right tax rate, how should the 2% be applied?

The world is full of people who think they ought to have the right to spend your money whether you like it or not. The tax system is their primary vehicle (organized crime is Number Two).

President Biden offered a weak and tired set of remarks following his “meetings in Saudi Arabia,” as the White House transcript puts it. I’ll give him that one, but is it a big deal? Jacob Magid reports for Times of Israel: “Contradicting Biden, Saudis deny opening of airspace is step toward ties with Israel.” However, the Saudis have their own interest in talking it down while Biden talks it up.

Ruy Teixera is the author (with John Judis) of 2002’s The Emerging Democratic Majority. The book foresaw the rise of the multiethnic Democratic coalition that elected Barack Obama in 2008. Both Teixera and Judis are well-known men of the left, but Teixera has resisted the cultural mania that has overtaken the Democratic Party and imposed a stifling orthodoxy.

Now Teixera has not only taken to the free-speech platform provided by Substack at the Liberal Patriot. He has departed the Center for American Progress for the American Enterprise Institute. Politico’s Michael Schaeffer reported his move in “‘A Real Chilling Effect’: A Lefty Scholar is Dumping CAP — For AEI.”

Referring to the internal dynamics at CAP, Teixera comments: “It’s just cloud cuckoo land.” I think that is a widely applicable judgment to the totalizing leftist madness that now stares us in the teeth every day. Teixera had the nerve to say it out loud from inside the asylum.

As Hate Crimes Pile Up Against Churches and Pregnancy Centers, Hawley Cracks Down

17th July 2022

Read it.

It began in Boulder, Colorado. On the night of May 3, one day after Politico leaked a draft of the Dobbs Supreme Court decision that would eventually overturn Roe v. Wade seven weeks later, criminals attacked Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, smashing windows and spray-painting multiple anti-Catholic and pro-abortion slogans on the doors and walls of the building.

Thus began a country-wide wave of hate crimes and terrorist attacks against churches, pregnancy resource centers, and pro-life organizations unlike anything seen before in the U.S., with at least 85 attacks occurring in the 74 days since the May 2 leak. The Washington Stand has tallied an additional 21 incidents of assaults on pro-life individuals and police officers, disruptions of religious services, and other violent incidents committed by pro-abortion extremists over that same time frame.

In response, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., introduced the Pregnancy Resource Center Defense Act on Thursday with the goal of toughening criminal penalties for those who attack pregnancy centers and places of worship.

It might be too late for Liz Cheney to change her ways. She is trailing her Republican opponent, Harriet Hagerman, by 22 points in the Wyoming Republican primary.

Liz is encouraging Democrats in Wyoming to vote for her in the primary. That may not be enough to help her hold onto her seat in the House. Registered Republicans make up 71% of registered voters in Wyoming compared to 15% registered as Democrats.

Dr. Birx Praises Herself While Revealing Ignorance, Treachery, and Deceit

17th July 2022

Read it.

The December 2020 resignation of Dr. Deborah Birx, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator under Trump, revealed predictable hypocrisy. Like so many other government officials around the world, she was caught violating her own stay-at-home order. Therefore she finally left her post following nine months of causing unfathomable amounts of damage to life, liberty, property, and the very idea of hope for the future.

Even if Anthony Fauci had been the front man for the media, it was Birx who was the main influence in the White House behind the nationwide lockdowns that did not stop or control the pathogen but have caused immense suffering and continue to roil and wreck the world. So it was significant that she would not and could not comply with her own dictates, even as her fellow citizens were being hunted down for the same infractions against “public health.”

Quotation of the Day

16th July 2022

“God, I love this country. This is the only place on earth where people said “well, I do like donuts, but I cannot possibly be expected to get out of my car to obtain them,” and someone said, in return, “actually, I think I have a solution for that.” Here, if you can think of a product, you can almost certainly find it somewhere. It’s magical.”

16th July 2022

I’ll bet you didn’t know that there was an ‘arrow industry’.

I’ll bet you didn’t know what ‘disrupting the arrow industry’ even means. (Does it turn into a bolt of plasma as it comes off the bow?)
