Using CRISPR-Cas9, they switched off an enzyme in tomatoes that ordinarily prevents the molecular forerunner of vitamin D3 (called 7-dehydrocholesterol, or 7-DHC) from accumulating in the plant.
The result is a tomato plant that, when exposed to ultraviolet light (like from the Sun), creates massive amounts of the prized vitamin in its leaves and, more usefully for us, also a fair amount in the fruit.

Dangerous ideas! Far-right! Neoreactionaries! Ties to Silicon Valley! Hostility toward democracy
OH NO WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!
Or maybe not. Proglodytes have this problem with agency: Just as they behave as if non-white people are too feckless to run their own lives without well-educated rich white leftists to tell them what to do, they behave as if ideas can cause cancer – just being in the wrong place at the wrong time can make you contract Long Trumpism or worse. This attitude is why progressives are often characterized as the New Puritans: You’ve got to be saved from yourselves because by yourselves you’re too weak/stupid/evil to do the Right Thing, so your Betters need to force you into it (For Your Own Good, of course).
Hence there is always a bull market for these sorts of hand-wringing pearl-clutching articles in the Narrative Media. If you’re looking for a side job and can stomach it, write up a few and send them to the New Yorker, you might get lucky.

I use Harry’s products because I like them and they’re very cost-effective compared to Big Razor companies like Gillette and Schick. I also resist any urge that I might have – and, if it exists, it’s a small one – to buy stuff based on the politics of the people who make it. (Except Ben & Jerry’s; they deserve to die in penury.)
But I find this whole notion of ‘They won’t advertise with us because of our politics, so we’ll do what they do and do it better nyah nyah nyah’ to be strangely attractive and (dare I say it?) typically American.
My hesitation is due to the fact that ‘Jeremy’s razors’ sounds rather … metrosexual.

Being a government hack has its advantages. You get eleven paid holidays per year. You get promoted for poor performance. The benefits are superb. Best of all, you can get remarkably rich…even if you’re a screw up.
President Joe Biden, for example, has worked for the federal government for nearly 50 years. His net worth is about $9 million.
Yet Biden and his wife Jill really made the big bucks between 2017 and 2020, when Biden was out of office. Together, they hauled in $17.3 million in book deals and speaking fees. These are some of the fringe benefits of having been a government bigwig.

The free-money PPP “loan” obtained by a prostitute frequented by Hunter Biden offers a vividly teachable insight into American capitalism: you don’t maximize your private gains by offering a product or service that’s faster, better, cheaper, you maximize your private gains by securing a government-gimme. Hunter’s Hooker Scored $20,000 PPP Loan As Joe Biden Entered White House.
The cornucopia of government-gimmes is vast. There are “loans” which are forgiven, i.e. free money such as the PPP “loans;” government subsidies and tax breaks designed to serve the interests of a single enterprise or cartel; low-interest loans unavailable to tax donkeys; sweetheart contracts where the private cartel/monopoly can overbill the government without consequence; toothless anti-trust agencies allow monopolies to scoop up dozens or even hundreds of potential competitors, and skims/scams funded by government largess: Medicare / Medicaid fraud, the student-loan racket, and so on, in an endless profusion of ways to maximize private gains via investing capital in capitol, i.e. bribing politicians and bureaucrats to use the government’s vast powers to enrich the few at the expense of the many.

The pro-abortion group ‘Ruth Sent Us’ suggested targeting the children of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett with protests against the court’s leaked draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
The group tweeted an infographic with the name of Barrett’s church. It also identified the school that Barrett’s children attend, and encouraged protesters to “voice your anger” by demonstrating there.
The graphic also stated that a protest would be organized there every Thursday evening. The tweet was posted in response to another tweet by ‘Duty to Warn,’ an anti-Trump group, which quoted Barrett as saying that “a legal career is but a means to an end and that end is building the Kingdom of God.”
This is despicable.

Recently, a tiny group of people with rectal cancer saw their disease vanish after experimental treatment.
It was a very small trial done by doctors at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, wherein the patients took a drug called dostarlimab for six months. At the end of their trial, every single one of their tumors disappeared.
Now, in another breakthrough, a new compound synthesized by Dr. Jung-Mo Ahn, a University of Texas at Dallas researcher, has been found to kill a broad spectrum of hard-to-treat cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer, leaving healthy cells unscathed.

Authorities on the Gulf coast of Mexico said the bodies of seven men have been found dumped on a roadway in the Huasteca region, long popular among tourists. Prosecutors in San Luis Potosi state said late Thursday the bodies did not appear to be from the township of Aquismon, and may have been killed elsewhere and dumped in the rural area. Photos of the bodies showed extensive bruising on the corpses, suggesting they had been beaten. Writing scrawled in markers on the corpses said “this is what happened to me for working with the Gulf,” an apparent reference to the Gulf cartel, which operates mainly along the U.S. border to the north.

School surveys that collect information from students and create a perceived need for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum have caught the attention of Missouri authorities. Attorney General Eric Schmitt issued subpoenas this week to seven school districts that allegedly employ student surveys—created by education companies Panorama and Project Wayfinder—to gather data about parents’ political beliefs and income levels, as well as racial identity, sexual behaviors, and mental health. “Those same groups come in and sell that curriculum to the schools,” said Kimberly Hermann, general counsel with Southeastern Legal Foundation, a national nonprofit law firm that defends liberty. “The contracts with these companies are public record so they’re supposed to be approved during school board meetings, but the surveys are happening without parental consent and parental notification.”

With border cities overwhelmed by a record surge in migration, the Department of Homeland Security is planning to start transporting migrants into cities away from the border, according to DHS documents reviewed by NBC News.
Los Angeles has been designated as the first city to be the recipient of the transported migrants, with Albuquerque, Houston, Dallas and others to follow. In a statement to NBC, DHS said “no decision has been made.”
Away from microphones, DHS officials jokingly refer to the scheme as the “Abbott plan,” according to an unidentified official who spoke to NBC. That’s a reference to Texas governor Greg Abbott, who earlier this year sent at least 10 busloads of illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C. as a means of redistributing the wealth of inbound Latin American diversity.
He’ll just send them back to D.C.

It’s the inflation you’re not supposed to see.
From toilet paper to yogurt and coffee to corn chips, manufacturers are quietly shrinking package sizes without lowering prices. It’s dubbed “shrinkflation,” and it’s accelerating worldwide.
In the United States, a small box of Kleenex now has 60 tissues; a few months ago, it had 65. Chobani Flips yogurts have shrunk from 5.3 ounces to 4.5 ounces. In the UK, Nestle slimmed down its Nescafe Azera Americano coffee tins from 100 grams to 90 grams. In India, a bar of Vim dish soap has shrunk from 155 grams to 135 grams.

Anyone testing positive would have to delay his or her return. That quarantine would entail spending thousands of dollars in finding scarce hotel accommodations, additional living expenses, and rebooked airline tickets—depending upon the length of the mandatory sequestration.
Contrast the tens of thousands of foreign nationals now mustering to cross illegally into the United States again this summer. They follow the already 2 million who have entered the country unlawfully since Joe Biden became president.
Does any foreign national worry about being tested for COVID-19, much less fear being turned away if he tests positive or for lack of proof of vaccination?
Or do we scrutinize far more carefully U.S. citizens entering legally their own country than we do noncitizens crossing our borders unlawfully?

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
In the biological sciences, there are a group of measures used to test the health of an ecosystem or the health of a species. In the case of a species, estimates of the population are usually the starting place. Then it may be the population density of the species, which can determine if the pressure is the loss of habitat or some unknown environmental factor that is lowering fertility. It is assumed that a declining population relative to territory is always a sign of crisis in a species.
Of course, these measures are never used to test the health of European populations because that is a conspiracy theory. Everyone knows that all you have to do is utter the abracadabra phrase “conspiracy theory” and all of the related things that are easily observed can no longer be mentioned. Putting that aside, the same measures we use to test the health of a species could be applied to humans. In fact, we could have much more granular and accurate measures.

In the north there is yet another crisis for the federal government to mismanage in a spectacular and embarrassing fashion. In Kaduna State the local bandit problem has reached critical levels. During three days (March 26-28) over 200 Hausa bandits attacked the Kaduna International Airport, killing a security guard, and forcing the airports to remain closed until May 23rd. The government upgraded security at the airport in an effort to restore public confidence in local aviation and airports.
On March 28th a coalition of local gangsters and Boko Haram Islamic terrorists used explosives to destroy some of the track and cause a locomotive and eleven passenger cars to derail, halting service on the 190-kilometer track from Kaduna City to Abuja, the Nigerian capital. The train had departed Abuja with 362 listed passengers. The derailment killed nine people and it is unclear how many are being held for ransom because 141 passengers are still unaccounted for. Many apparently returned home without notifying the railroad or police. Rail service was supposed to resume in May but a few more attacks and uncertainty over how many passengers are being held for ransom meant few people were willing to travel on that route until there were assurances that it was safe and there was news about how many passengers were being held by the kidnappers. One hostage, a banker, has been freed but refuses to provide any details. It is suspected that a large ransom was promptly paid. Few of the missing passengers can afford a substantial ransom and the attackers said they were willing to trade passengers for jailed bandits and Boko Haram members.

If someone attempts to murder a Supreme Court justice, but corporate media barely covers it, did it actually happen?
Sure, most outlets covered the news of the arrest of man who, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, arrived at Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home, armed with a “tactical knife, a pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crowbar, pistol light, [and] duct tape,” per the Justice Department.
But after reporting the basic facts—that the suspect’s name was John Nicholas Roske, that he had been deterred by the sight of two deputy marshals outside Kavanaugh’s home—America’s journalists didn’t seem to rush into any analysis.
Because, of course, when it comes to political violence in the United States today, here’s a maxim you can always rely on: If the victim or likely victim is on the right, the perpetrator is simply a lone wolf. But if the victim or likely victim is on the left, the perpetrator was fueled by dangerous rhetoric.

As you may have heard, there’s been slightly more than the usual amount of drama at the Washington Post the past few days. In the midst of the ongoing, junior-high quality drama, a young employee and Stanford graduate named Holden Foreman decided to white knight on behalf of the women generating the drama. He did this by tattling on male Washington Post employees who agreed with a different female employee that everybody should give it a rest, put the drama behind them and get back to work.
So, who is this courageous Generation Tide Pod person, Holden Foreman, standing up for the right of women to create and sustain workplace drama? As I said, he is a graduate of Stanford. While at Stanford, he apparently published an article … I am not making this up … complaining that he had to go hungry at college because eating food from a cafeteria was too traumatizing for him and he lacked the ability to determine for himself how much food to eat. The remedy he demanded … still not making this up… was that the university should cut and portion his food for him individually so he would be spared the trauma of eating at a buffet.
