Matt Ridley.
With a laboratory leak in Wuhan looking more and more likely as the source of the pandemic, the Chinese authorities are not the only ones dismayed. Western environmentalists had been hoping to turn the pandemic into a fable about humankind’s brutal rape of Gaia. Even if ‘wet’ wildlife markets and smuggled pangolins were exonerated in this case, they argued, and the outbreak came from some direct contact with bats, the moral lesson was ecological. Deforestation and climate change had left infected bats stressed and with nowhere to go but towns. Or it had driven desperate people into bat-infested caves in search of food or profit.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation plans to gift a mortgage-free home to the family of one of the 13 service members killed in the terrorist suicide bombing at Kabul airport.
Chairman and CEO of the foundation, Frank Siller, told “Breitbart News Saturday” that his company was building mortgage-free homes for Gold Star Families, “and that includes any of the 13 that left behind a young family. And we do know one of them — his wife is pregnant and will be giving birth shortly. We are going to build her a mortgage-free house. And rest assured, we are going to take care of any Gold Star Family that fits that criteria.”

Freeberg nails it, as he always does.
It’s like the 1980’s all over again. Everywhere, I see people offering their opinions about abortion, and a lot of these opinions consist of nothing more than a showy cranky statement that some certain set of other people shouldn’t have opinions. Of course that’s a dishonest way to present a non-argument argument. What they’re really trying to say is “We want this other set of people to have a license to kill, but we know if we argued it that way we’d lose, so we’re going to argue about not arguing about it.”
…
They think children are liabilities and not assets. You’ll notice our whole society is built around this idea now. “Who’s going to take care of him or her?” “How are you going to afford child support for three kids?” “Oh you are collecting child support from him, aren’t you?” “Better keep her happy fella, she’s a Fertile Myrtle and that would be one expensive divorce.” “He has special needs, how are you going to get him the help that he needs?” Etc….it used to be, the poorer the farmer, the more kids he would have to have. Children were assets, even if you were heartless, and if you had a heart they were a blessing. We don’t look at it like that anymore because, let’s be honest, we can’t. Liabilities aren’t blessings.
And in large part that’s true. Everyone is surprised that the population growth rates are crashing around the First World and chattering with nerves because those in the Turd World are the same as they’ve always been without any appreciation of the reality on the ground. In the history of the world up until Bill Gates, children were an asset – it took some time and effort to get them to a useful size, but once you did they pitched in and raised the entire family’s standard of living (at least the ones that survived). That is no longer the case. Hence, children have gone from being a Useful Thing to being a luxury, one that people are increasingly being unwilling t0 pay for. (The reason the illegitimacy rate is so high in the Diverse Part of Town is that being an unwed mother is the magic ticket allowing a teenage girl to escape the parental straightjacket and get off on her own, subsidized by Uncle Sam.)
So abortion is just the end of the spectrum that spans School Debt Forgiveness and I Don’t Have To Pay My Rent Because COVID and Free Health Care From Obama.

Scott Johnson at Power Line discusses at great length the degeneration demonstrated by Peggy Noonan, hitherto a reliable conservative voice, during the Age of Trump.
Noonan is a sore subject of long standing with me. She makes my skin crawl.
Noonan joined the crowd turning on George W. Bush in what I thought was (in Noonan’s case) a grossly unfair manner in 2008. Noonan wasn’t just unfair, she was also cowardly. I wrote critically about one of Noonan’s weekly Wall Street Journal columns in which she identified with the public disapproval of Bush that April in “Season of the witch.”
Having turned on George W. Bush, Noonan moved on to support the election of Barack Obama later that year. Noonan all but endorsed Obama in her 2008 column “Obama and the runaway train.” The anti-Bush and pro-Obama columns fit neatly together.
Tru dat.
The advent of The Magic Negro, and then of Donald Trump, has acted as a political power-washer upon the layers of nominally conservative and formally Republican ‘knowledge workers’ in D.C.–Noo Yawk Crust, sluicing away those whose attachments were weak and easily degraded. This ought to serve as a wake-up call to those who insufficiently cognizant of the corrosive effect of living adjacent to the Corridors of Power on The Other Left Coast. Perhaps it’s something in the water.

In this first economic history of the 2020 COVID crisis, Columbia University historian Adam Tooze identifies some harbingers of the new world we have entered. Venerable retail stores went bust: Neiman–Marcus, J.Crew, Brooks Brothers. Kurzarbeit, the widely imitated German system of “smart” unemployment benefits in which government tops up income to keep people working, was extended to prostitutes. While big airlines withered, turning airports into empty Ozymandian mausoleums, travel on private jets continued almost uninterrupted.

CubanaAngel, as she is known on social media, is the wrong sort of civil rights campaigner — the mainstream left would prefer it if she kept her mouth shut. A black woman in California, CubanaAngel has the wrong opinions, she worships an unfashionable god and probably doesn’t even give her pronouns when she meets new people. Despite not passing the political purity test, CubanaAngel believed she had the right to speak-out against something she felt was unjust. But when she did, the US edition of the Guardian, a paper which describes itself as “giving a voice to the powerless”, reported that she had made “unsubstantiated allegations” which had fuelled violent far-right extremism.

Senior Taliban officials met in Kabul on Sunday with the U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, who promised to maintain assistance for the Afghan people, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said.
I don’t suppose anybody suggested sealing off the borders and not letting anything in or out until the Taliban laid down their arms and restored the democratically-elected government. (But, of course, the U.N. has never insisted upon democratically-elected governments in its ranks.)

Public education, today, is far more concerned with raising the grades and test scores of its lowest achieving students than with pushing all students towards a higher standard. Of course, schools would love everyone to learn more and they are eager to highlight any academic achievement that they can use to create the illusion of educational excellence. But in a world of finite resources, the priorities are quite clear. Whenever a school has to choose, they will sacrifice the benefit of the many to focus on the least successful few.
The inevitable result of the ‘no child left behind’ mindset is the inevitable triumph of No Child Gets Ahead.

It was seven years ago that Rolling Stone magazine ran the 9,000-word cover story on an alleged rape at the University of Virginia that turned out to be a complete hoax. (File it next to Dan Rather’s Texas Air National Guard story.)
Well, it looks like Rolling Stone has done it again. I don’t know what’s up with the controversy over the use of ivermectin, normally a drug treatment for de-worming horses, as a COVID treatment, but Rolling Stone has a long piece up claiming that an Oklahoma hospital is having to treat large numbers of ivermectin overdoses, and denying hospital beds for patients with other medical needs.
There’s only one problem with the story: It is almost certainly fake news.

A devastating pandemic with massive unemployment, followed by a shortage of workers during the recovery is forming a boon for the automation industry.
The shortage of workers is exacerbated by the generous government welfare and unemployment benefits.
So, businesses are forced to automate more whether they like it or not, thus eliminating more jobs.
Ultimately, when the workers who are lounging at home now eventually want (or are forced) to go back to work won’t have as many jobs to go back to.
So the political pressure will build to provide more taxpayer-funded welfare benefits.
Eventually we will wind up as Eloi and Morlocks, except that the Morlocks will look like Jeff Bezos and the Eloi like Stacy Abrams.
I’m glad I won’t live to see it (I hope).

You can tell that Clive Riordan, the villain in Edward Dmytryk’s Obsession (1949), is a thwarted and disturbed person because he owns an elaborate model railway. Admittedly, there are other indications: primarily the way he kidnaps his wife’s lover and holds the man captive in the basement of a blitzed building, slowly filling the bath of acid in which he plans to dissolve his corpse. It is the scenes of Riordan at play, however, that are truly damning. Running locomotives around the chest-high papier-mâché mountain range that dominates his basement, his megalomania and sadism are thrown into stark relief. This urbane postwar cuckold becomes legible as an ancestor of the basement-dwelling incel of contemporary folklore, impotently venting his frustrations via endless online deathmatches.
I found myself thinking of Obsession in September 2020, when Joe Biden’s campaign team created an island in the Nintendo game Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020). Visitors could enjoy an ice cream with bobbleheaded Joe and Kamala avatars before picking up TEAM JOE signs for display on their very own in-game lawns. They could also pay a visit to ‘Joe’s Train Town’, a basement room featuring an array of model railway sets. This touch was presumably meant to evoke Biden’s old-fashioned decency and pioneer spirit, while expressing a vaguely greenish, vaguely leftish regard for mass-transit infrastructure; I took it as confirmation that anyone who aspires to be Commander in Chief must have a Riordanesque streak.

Rabbi Raziel Cohen doesn’t want you to have to draw a gun in synagogue. But if you must, he doesn’t want you to waste precious time unbuttoning your kapota, a type of jacket worn by men in the Chabad Hasidic community on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
So Cohen, a firearms instructor who goes by the moniker “The Tactical Rabbi,” worked with Shaul Snovsky, who sells kapotas in South Florida, to create the Tactical Kapota. The jacket, which looks like any other kapota, closes with snaps instead of buttons for easy opening. Its cost: $550.

New Zealand had tried for years to deport the knife-wielding militant who wounded seven people at a mall in Auckland last week, the government said after it released more details on the attacker following the lifting of a court suppression order.
Court documents made public on Sunday identified the attacker as Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen, 32, an ethnic Tamil Muslim from Sri Lanka. He had arrived in New Zealand 10 years ago on a student visa seeking refugee status, which was granted in 2013.

In my twenties, I believed that successful people hold secret knowledge leading to their success. I obsessed over “self-help porn”: books, videos, and blogs promising to reveal little secrets that would make me successful one day, too.
But when I started observing and talking to people I consider successful, I noticed they don’t do anything extraordinary. In fact, they do quite the opposite. They follow “boring” advice I already heard a million times in proverbs, religious and old philosophy stories, and even from my grandma.
And it makes sense!. It has already been figured out for thousands of years! There is nothing new a Brian can write in his next New York Times bestseller while sipping a $9 latte that I didn’t hear before. All I ever had to do is to act on that well-known advice.
Actually, there is a secret body of knowledge that guarantees success, but you people aren’t authorized to access it. Sorry.

One of the ironies here is that Line 3 will replace an existing pipeline. It incorporates modern anti-leak technologies and will be much better for the environment than the existing line. Nonetheless, Congresswoman Omar deems the pipeline a threat to wild rice.
