How do you Extinguish a Lithium Battery Fire?

4th March 2021

Read it.

A few weeks ago I asked a fire fighter friend how they extinguish electric vehicle battery fires.

He said “Oh you mean like a Tesla or something? The answer is you can’t. You cordon off the area, and spray a fine mist of water on the fire to try to keep the temperature down until it finishes burning. Takes a few days until it is safe”.

Just in case you needed a reason not to buy an electric car. And don’t get me started about Tesla….

These Texas Chains Will Still Require Masks Once the State’s Mandate Is Lifted

4th March 2021

CNN.

Leading US grocery chains, pharmacies, retailers and auto manufacturers, including Target (TGT), Kroger (KR), CVS (CVS), Walgreens (WBA), Best Buy (BBY), Macy’s (M) JCPenney (JCP), Toyota (TM), GM (GM) and others, say they will continue to require mask wearing at their stores and facilities by both employees and customers. There are exceptions, however, and some business advocates are concerned that the end of these states’ mask mandates will create new challenges for companies and their workers.

2021 Is The Year We Fund Students, Not Systems

3rd March 2021

Read it.

As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, many public schools have been closed for in-person instruction for nearly a year, thanks in large part to resistance from teachers’ unions. Meanwhile, children have been falling behind academically, mentally, and physically — and their families have been scrambling to search for education alternatives because of the traditional public school system’s unwillingness, and in some cases inability, to adapt to change.

The past year has exposed one of the main problems with K-12 education in the United States: there is a long-existing massive power imbalance between the public school monopoly and individual families.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Idiots

3rd March 2021

Sarah Hoyt is just about fed up.

Years ago, when I blogged more regularly at Classical Values than here, the blog had a post on the current war on things that work.

What things? Well….. everything: from pirex apparently no longer being made with the stuff that made it actually more or less high-temp impervious, hard to break, etc; to dishwashers that take forever to wash, where dishes must be put into already washed and which, even so, often manage a great redistribution of grease and grit all over the dishes;to toilets that are “low flush” and thus use more water than ever because you have to flush them about five times, and still they won’t work; to cars–

Never mind. it would be easier to describe the things the left has left alone, instead of going after them like Don Quixote tilting against the last functioning windmill in the land, the one needed to grind wheat for his bread. To my knowledge they have yet to interfere with– wait, wait, let me think about it…. Um…. Okay, they haven’t yet dictated that every morning I must get dressed by first putting my pants on, and then putting on my underwear. However, rest assured this is probably around the corner, and just a matter of them getting a bee in their bonnect about some virtue signaling they can do relating to “the order in which humans get dressed.”

The Modern Prison State

3rd March 2021

ZMan.

In the modern age, and really just in the last generation, this relationship has flipped around the other way. We have all the data we need for any question. We know more about world than we really want or need to know. What we lack is information and more important, trustworthy sources of information. Medieval man could rely on the Church or the local lord to maintain the rules of society. The only thing modern man can know about his sources of information is they are wrong.

The first thing you should notice is the people most responsible for the tsunami of disinformation are claiming to be at war with disinformation. Unless this results in mass suicide by media and entertainment, it means they are lying. Note also the use of the term “expert” in that piece. There is no such thing as a disinformation expert, outside of the institutions promulgating disinformation. One cannot be an expert at doing something unless you are actually doing that thing.

Renaissance-era Letter Sealed for Centuries Just Virtually Unfolded and Read for the First Time

3rd March 2021

Read it.

For centuries prior to the invention of sealed envelopes, sensitive correspondence was protected from prying eyes through complex folding techniques called “letterlocking,” which transformed a letter into its own secure envelope. However, locked letters that survive to the present are fragile and can be opened physically only by slicing them to pieces.

The new X-ray method offers researchers a non-invasive alternative, maintaining a letterpacket’s original folded shape. For the first time, scientists applied this method to “locked” letters from the Renaissance period, kept in a trunk that had been in the collection of the Dutch postal museum in The Hague, The Netherlands, since 1926.

We have the technology.

Senate hopeful John Fetterman often touts his role in advocating for the release of harmless and “innocent” prisoners. A review of the Democrat’s record on commutation cases, however, shows the Democrat has voted to release violent criminals jailed for their roles in brutal murders.

As Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor, Fetterman leads the five-person Board of Pardons, which evaluates clemency applications in the state. Since taking on the job in 2019, the Democrat has voted to release more criminals sentenced to life in prison than any other member of the panel, state records obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show.

Mike Pence.

Under the Constitution, elections are governed at the state level. And each state is required to appoint presidential electors “in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct.”

Many of the most troubling voting irregularities took place in states that set aside laws enacted by state legislatures in favor of sweeping changes ordered by governors, secretaries of state, and courts.

The Blip

2nd March 2021

Read it.

If you are like most economists—until a couple of years ago, it was virtually all economists—you are not greatly troubled by this story, which is, with some variation, the consensus long-arc view of economic history. The machinery of innovation, after all, is now more organized and sophisticated than it has ever been, human intelligence is more efficiently marshaled by spreading education and expanding global connectedness, and the examples of the Internet, and perhaps artificial intelligence, suggest that progress continues to be rapid.

But if you are prone to a more radical sense of what is possible, you might begin to follow a different line of thought. If nothing like the first and second industrial revolutions had ever happened before, what is to say that anything similar will happen again? Then, perhaps, the global economic slump that we have endured since 2008 might not merely be the consequence of the burst housing bubble, or financial entanglement and overreach, or the coming generational trauma of the retiring baby boomers, but instead a glimpse at a far broader change, the slow expiration of a historically singular event. Perhaps our fitful post-crisis recovery is no aberration. This line of thinking would make you an acolyte of a 72-year-old economist at Northwestern named Robert Gordon, and you would probably share his view that it would be crazy to expect something on the scale of the second industrial revolution to ever take place again.

The essence of Progressivism is that progress in the modern world is inevitable — that’s the Right Side of History they keep nattering about — as long as we change enough stuff to allow progress to happen. Since progress is inevitable and progress requires change, then any change will ultimately produce progress, and it doesn’t really matter what change it is. Conservatives, on the other hand, see that history teaches us that change can be either good or bbad, so we have to be careful about what changes we make.

Biomason Builds Concrete With Bacteria

2nd March 2021

Read it.

A billion or two years ago, corals, brachiopods, and other sea creatures took carbon dioxide and calcium out of the seawater to build shells out of calcium carbonate, CaCO3. They were little biological factories capable of building giant structures like coral reefs. When they died they would sink to the bottom of the shallow seas and become limestone.

About 200 years ago, Joseph Aspdin figured out how to reverse the process, cooking limestone and clay at high temperatures, which decomposes after the water and carbon dioxide is driven off, leaving calcium oxide (CaO). This reacts with other ingredients, silicates and aluminates, to make Portland cement. Mix that with aggregate and water, and the mixture crystallizes and glues everything together into concrete.

1st March 2021

Read it.

Rep. Katie Porter (D., Calif.), a self-styled working-class champion who has criticized the number of millionaires in Congress, has up to nearly $3 million in assets, filings show.

According to her most recent financial disclosure report, Porter has between $1.2 million and $2.8 million in assets. Porter’s leadership PAC, Truth to Power, recently solicited donations with a statement decrying the fact that millionaires comprise “a shockingly large portion of our federal government.”

I have no problem with legislators being millionaires, although it does rather make their Soak The Rich noises somewhat ludicrous.
