ZMan’s weekly podcast.
Something I wanted to talk about in the show, but I got long winded on other stuff, so I had to skip it, is something I talked about with a friend this week. That is, why is it that so many people have gone crazy all at once? There’s always been partisanship and fierce debates between liberals and normal people. People have always had heated debates about current events. Today, we have lots of people who seem to live in an alternative reality from the rest of us.

A recent blog post by investor and stand-up comedian James Altucher (mentioned here) arguing that New York is dead forever attracted the hostility of many New Yorkers. Fellow comedian Jerry Seinfeld wrote a New York Times op-ed calling Altucher a “whimpering putz.” Mayor De Blasio, naturally, agrees with Seinfeld.
…
With all due respect to these people, they missed Altucher’s point. New York as a city will survive. But New York as an ideal, a place that builds wealth and fulfills dreams like nowhere else in America, will not. Not to put too many words in Altucher’s mouth, what is really dead is the idea that New York City or Manhattan densities are necessary have a healthy economy and diverse culture.
Altucher pointed out that the pandemic has taught high-income people that they don’t need to deal with the congestion, high costs of living, homeless people, crime, and other stresses of the densest city in America. The things that made New York attractive are disappearing: lots of restaurants are permanently closed; lots of entertainment businesses promise to reopen next year, but no one knows if they will.

The Other McCain reports.
This whole interview with Brett Baier of Fox News is a disaster for T.J. Ducklo, who is exactly the type of testosterone-deficient soyboy you’d expect to be National Press Secretary for Joe Biden. When Baier raised the issue of Biden’s declining mental acuity — which is highly relevant to his fitness for office — Ducklo went into a complete meltdown.

If time was measured in news cycles, it has been roughly 17.765329 years since professional football has graced our screens. But, defying all of the odds, and media narratives, the NFL season returned for its first game of the season Thursday night.
The game itself was surprisingly high quality, considering the lack of a pre-season due to COVID-19. Reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, took the field against a traditionally high-powered Houston Texans team.
That was not what caught the eyes of most people who tuned in, however.
The NFL has the same problem as the NBA: Most of their audience, and certainly the more profitable part, are white, while their ‘equipment’ are mostly black.

The average cost of building a single unit of housing for the homeless in Los Angeles has risen to $531,000, according to an audit from the city controller, who recommends that L.A. rehab motels and open dormitory-style buildings to save money and get people off the streets quickly.
Controller Ron Galperin, in a report due Wednesday, also cited two projects whose costs soared to nearly $750,0000 per unit and assailed delays that he said have driven city-funded homeless construction expenses up from initial projections of $350,000 a unit.
Nearly four years after voters approved Proposition HHH, only three projects have opened, construction has not started on three-quarters of the planned units, and many projects may “never come to fruition,” said Galperin, adding that the delays began before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like almost all narco submarines this vessel was not actually a true submarine. Instead it is more of a ‘semi-submersible’ or what is called a low profile vessel (LPV). This means that it runs as low in the water as possible which makes it very hard to detect. Just how low can be seen in the Coast Guard video, note how the waves wash over the front of the boat.
These vessels are most active in the Eastern Pacific, coming up from Colombia. This is why San Diego based Coast Guard cutters seem to get the lion’s share of them. They are built in secret ‘artisan’ boat yards hidden in the myriad of jungle estuaries which lead to the sea. Narco submarines can also be found in the Caribbean and, increasingly, in the Atlantic.

Joan Donovan, director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at the center, blamed conservatives for being the real source of America’s modern violence. Her September 3 op-ed ran in the MIT Technology Review specifically targeted “right-wing adversarial media-makers like Elijah Schaffer and Andy Ngo.”
Her piece, “How an overload of riot porn is driving conflict in the streets,” condemned conservatives for using social media as a “machine to spread a narrative of lawless rioting.” Donovan smeared the uptick in use of video to condemn the violence of rioters as “the rise of riot porn.”

In Portland, the police are leaving the force. More have left in the last month than in the whole of the previous year. A backlog in paperwork probably conceals that many more have filed for retirement. The reason for this lies in the cowardly, detestable, and fickle political leadership of the city, which has refused to do anything as the city is torn apart by rioting. Politicians running against the current mayor are, if anything, even crazier than he is. The front runner is avowed Antifa.
The police chief there, Jami Resch, resigned amid criticism of her department coming from the city council. It seems they didn’t like Resch’s attempts to crack down on rioting.
One wonders what will be left of Portland in another year or so. The fact that they are poised to elect an Antifa member as mayor bespeaks a city-wide suicide pact.
It was a nice city — while it lasted.

It’s been a little over a month since former president Barack Obama blessed the increasingly popular notion of doing away with the Senate filibuster. “If all this takes eliminating the filibuster, another Jim Crow relic, in order to secure the God-given rights of every American,” he told the congregants at John Lewis’s funeral, “then that’s what we should do.”
And just as Obama had no compunction about using this alleged relic of Jim Crow — as a senator he took to the floor more than once to defend the practice as a vital tool in preserving constitutional checks and balances and genuine debate — Democrats have no problem using it whenever it suits them.

The toll lockdowns have taken on human life and human rights has been incalculable. Increases in child abuse, suicide, and even heart attacks, all appear to be a feature of mandatory stay-at-home orders issued by politicians who now rule by decree without any legislative or democratic due process. And then, of course, there is the economic toll on employment, which will feed negative impacts into the longer term. The economic burden has fallen the most on the young and on working-class families, whose earners are least able to work from home.

Almost daily, Greek and Turkish aircraft and ships fight mock battles over disputed oil and gas rights in the eastern Mediterranean.
Since the loss of much of the Christian Balkans to the Ottomans in the 15th century, Greece and what would later become modern Turkey have been rivals, outright enemies and often at war.
Mutual NATO membership and shared Cold War fears of Soviet Russia did not stop the two from almost going to war after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.
Still, the current escalation seems weird. Most territorial claims and disputes over borders were settled almost a century ago, and the two countries have had mass population exchanges.
Why, then, does the divide still run so deep?

There are some stunning indications that the supposedly satanic racist Donald Trump could be polling in some surveys around a 35-40 approval rate among Latinos and 20–30 percent among African Americans. Other polls are more equivocal but suggest an unexpected Trump surge among minority voters.
If those polls are accurate and predict November voting patterns, then Joe Biden could lose the popular vote as well as the key swing states by larger margins than Hillary Clinton’s Electoral College losses in 2016.

South Korea has made it official and is building one or more aircraft carriers for its F-35B stealth fighters. A 30,000-ton LPX II “amphibious ship” was added to the 2021-25 defense spending plan. LPX II would be similar but superior to the Japanese DDH “F-35B carrier” and would be able to carry up to 20 F-35Bs. While the designation LPX II indicates a larger amphibious ship, the LPX II will be built as an aircraft carrier, without facilities for carrying marines and their equipment. For several years South Korean defense officials have discussed building one or more 30,000-ton ships that look like the Japanese DDH (destroyer helicopter carrier) and are modified to handle a dozen or more F-35Bs.

It was a missed opportunity for their competitors at CBS and NBC.
The Libertarian magazine Reason put it best in describing the disturbing situation with Disney’s praise for the murderous Chinese regime. “The new Mulan movie is facing a barrage of criticism—and promises to boycott—for filming near Chinese concentration camps and then thanking the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for the privilege,” wrote Elizabeth Nolan Brown.

Six months into the pandemic, some traditions will still not be upset by a virus. As approximately half of K-12 schools are only offering online instruction, parents will still know little, if anything, of what their children are being taught in school except by accident—or unless they ask.
Recent fallout from such asymmetric information comes from Wylie, Texas, where a cartoon associating police with the KKK went from classroom to living room to the press room and on to the governor.
At Cooper Junior High, eighth-grade students were assigned to write about a political cartoon that depicts slave owners, then KKK members, and then police in corresponding panels. Furious parents, who only learned of the assignment because their children told them, contacted the school and wrote angry statements on social media.
Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott said the teacher responsible for the assignment should be fired.
The solution is to avoid sending your kids to a government school.
