The Forgotten Media Purges of the Great Depression

28th October 2019

Read it.

America did have a mostly free and independent press until the rise of broadcasting in the 1920s. Within a few years, a small group of Republicans, progressives and corporate interests successfully nationalized the airwaves with restrictive licensing that blocked competition, rewarded insiders and squelched dissent.

Over the next few decades, the increasingly powerful medium of radio and then television drowned out the previously broad spectrum of information and ideas—with often three or more diverse choices of daily newspapers in many U.S. cities—and turned free speech into carefully rationed federal broadcasting privileges, their anointed urban newspaper monopolies and a few approved magazines.

New Factory That Uses Enzymes to Recycle All Plastics at Once Has the Backing of Major Corporations

28th October 2019

Read it.

A French startup is poised to solve most of the world’s recycling conundrums with a new process that uses enzymes to break down the most problematic PET plastics (like contaminated black food trays) into a form so pure that it can be used to make clear water bottles that look and act like those made from petroleum.

The company, Carbios, envisions a circular plastic economy where nothing is wasted—and they have the money and backing from major global corporations to make it happen.

Controversial Theory on Extinction of Ice-Age Animals Supported by New Evidence

28th October 2019

Read it.

The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis, controversial from the time it was presented in 2007, proposes that an asteroid or comet hit the Earth about 12,800 years ago causing a period of extreme cooling that contributed to extinctions of more than 35 species of megafauna including giant sloths, sabre-tooth cats, mastodons and mammoths. It also coincides with a serious decline in early human populations such as the Clovis culture and is believed to have caused massive wildfires that could have blocked sunlight, causing an “impact winter” near the end of the Pleistocene Epoch.

“Big Mother”

27th October 2019

Freeberg has a list.

It’s been quite a week. I can’t spare a sufficient block of time to get it all captured, but it has not been lost on me that all of the significant events have to do with a socially accepted set of observations going in one direction, while the truth lies in the opposite direction. We as human beings can do this. We possess an ability, unique within the animal kingdom, to lie to ourselves. I did manage to make a list. It isn’t short. It makes me wonder if we’re becoming so estranged from truth and so anesthetized to even the most blatant attempts to deceive us, we may be losing the whole distinction between truth and falsehood.

Insanity: Doing the Same Thing Over and Over and Expecting a Different Result

27th October 2019

Read it.

California tried respecting Mother Nature by restricting the cutting and clearing and trimming of…pretty much everything…and it didn’t work. Mother Nature bit California in the ass, over and over and over. Fires that could have been small and manageable became conflagrations because of the huge amount of fuel available to them. But this didn’t teach them a damned thing.

Question: Would Batman Be Batman Without Bruce Wayne?

26th October 2019

Babylon Bee: Billionaire Bruce Wayne Criticized For Punching Down

Billionaire Bruce Wayne has come under fire for the way he dresses up as a bat and beats up alleged criminals. Many refer to his activity as “punching down” since the people he attacks tend to be citizens in the lower class.

“Bruce Wayne is a white male with billions of dollars,” said Gotham activist Pamela Isley. “He is one of the most privileged people in existence. And who is he attacking? People below the poverty line he says are ‘muggers.’ And he also often punches mentally ill clowns. The sickest thing is that he seems to think we should praise him for this.”

Isley then went on to say that, if anything, Wayne should be the one who is punched for having such an unequal amount of wealth in Gotham and that the only time he ever punched up was the time he fought Superman.

Wayne made one public statement while in the guise of Batman, saying in a gravelly voice, “I don’t need anyone to thank me, but all those who would prey on the good citizens of Gotham should fear me. I am vengeance. I am the night. I am… Batman! And if you pass a wealth tax, I’m moving.”

“Where does he get those wonderful toys?” — Jack Nicholson as The Joker

A very good question. One of the most attractive aspects of Batman is his “wonderful toys”, which he would not have if he weren’t a billionaire In Real Life. Without the Batplane, the Batmobile, the Bat Signal, the Bat Cave, and his Utility Belt, Batman would be rather a pathetic figure — some mentally deranged orphan who sneaks through the shadows in a strange costume (a fact that a number of non-superhero movies, like KickAss, have underscored).

And ponder, if you will, the sort of crimes that Batman fights: Crimes against the person (mugging, assaults, kidnappings) and crimes against property (armed robbery, cracking banks, hijacking trucks, making off with gold from the Fed, hat sort of thing).

And consider what falls off his radar: Drugs? Not so much. Money laundering? Uh, no. Insider trading, ponzi schemes, pump-and-dump? (Hey, we got Wall Street right here!) Sorry. International arms trade? Trade sanctions violations? Antifa thugs beating on harmless protestors? A bit beyond the scope of the old Utility Belt.

Most of us would love to be Batman — but I suspect that we would all settle for being Bruce Wayne. I know I would.

(And don’t get me started on Tony Stark and Iron Man….)

The University of Narcissism

25th October 2019

Read it.

Most Americans now take it for granted that universal education is a good thing, including in particular “higher education.” To be sure, only about a quarter of American adults have a bachelor’s degree, but even so, it’s commonly thought that the more of us who go to college, the better. A citizenry, after all, needs to be educated and informed, able to debate the important issues of the day, as opposed to just asserting their biases—the natural, and frequently vulgar, instinct of mankind.

Yet it is trite but true that all life is trade-offs, so it’s worth contemplating whether fulfilling the university mission, and maintaining academic standards, are compatible with the presence of a massive number of persons of average and of below-average intelligence in academia. There is also an important gender issue here: Men and women are different; those differences are not just social constructs; and as university bureaucracies increasingly are dominated by women, it seems clear that, as in the cases of the family and the workplace, the gender equality experiment is hardly an unmixed good in academia.

An American Dilemma

25th October 2019

Read it.

Today we’re seeing clear evidence of genetic differences between classes: causal differences. People with higher socioeconomic status have ( on average) higher EA polygenic scores. Higher scores for cognitive ability, as well. This is of course what every IQ test has shown for many decades.

It’s driving regional migration in the UK: people with higher scores in depressed areas (like mining towns) are leaving for London, leaving those towns even more depressed.

There is ongoing decline in those polygenic scores, as observed in other studies and as predicted by demographers and science-fiction writers many years ago.

Actually, ‘conundrum’ would be a better term than ‘dilemma’.

Freeze-Dried Plasma

25th October 2019

Read it.

The U.S. Army recently had some paratroopers carry freeze-dried plasma (FDP) kits in their rucksacks during a parachute jump. This was to verify for the FDA that the FDP kits can survive a parachute. That was really no problem because FDP does not require refrigeration and, like an MRE (freeze dried Meals, Ready to Eat), contains no liquid. It comes in a plastic bag ready to be mixed with an accompanying bag of sterile water. Both are packaged in a hard plastic container built to handle rough treatment in a combat zone. The FDP kits carried by these paratroopers was the new American-made FDP. Since 2012 SOCOM (Special Operations Command) troops have been using French FDP kits, which have been used by the French military since 1994. SOCOM medics have used the French FDP over twenty times since 2012 and that saved the lives of several American soldiers. The American FDP is expected to get final FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) approval by 2020.

Maddow So Smart? Why Deceitfully Insist Military Aid Wasn’t Sent to Ukraine?

25th October 2019

MSNBC has assiduously branded Rachel Maddow over the last decade as the foremost brainiac on cable, what with the nerdy glasses and high-top sneakers and over-the-top gushing when Maddow appears on other shows and the hosts are left dazed by the sheer immensity of her cognition. So when Maddow says something really dumb, it can’t be because she’s dumb, on that all liberals will agree, nor that she’s lazy or indifferent. Which leads to only one other conclusion — her default tendency to mislead.

Scott Adams keeps telling me that she is very smart but I see no evidence of it.

The Harrowing Facts of Chicago Homicide

24th October 2019

Read it.

The dire conditions under which black residents live in Chicago seem like an insurmountable problem. Gang violence, drugs, poverty, and a poor educational system are endemic in certain areas, and the city’s Democratic leadership does not seem interested in addressing these issues. Of course, the primary issue in Chicago is arguably the outrageous homicide rate.

Most of the violence is related to gang activity. But Chicago is unique among similarly afflicted cities in that its gang violence problem is not just the result of poverty or cultural issues. One of the worst aspects of these homicides is that very few cases are solved, meaning most of the criminals responsible do not face justice.

If you get the urge to shoot somebody, do it in Chicago.
