A student who sued Boston College over its mishandling of a sexual assault allegation against him won a $100,000 judgment. The case is considered legally significant because it is the first lawsuit to reach a jury since the Obama administration altered rules for adjudicating sexual assault allegations back in 2011.

Reporters from The New York Times and elsewhere said the company’s decision to exempt politicians like President Donald Trump from a fact-checkers’ gavel will likely turn social media into caldrons of misinformation. Facebook said the move was done to ensure speech from politicians will be heard and seen ahead of elections.
In other words, Facebook has retired from the media circus that supports the Narrative.
Bad Facebook! No biscuit!

Victor Davis Hanson.
So upset are our woke progressive candidates that they insist that the rich, the privileged, the white, and the native-born must now pay ever more penance. Amid such acrimony is an inconvenient truth, though one that remains utterly unspoken: Most of those on stage who are so livid at the exploitative “system” have become wealthy and quite privileged through it — especially since they have spent so much of their adult lives gaming supposedly poorly compensated political service.

In their paper, Krapivsky and Redner map three simple parking strategies onto an idealized, single row parking lot. Drivers who grab the first space available follow what the authors call a “meek” strategy. They “waste no time looking for a parking spot,” leaving spots near the entrance unfilled. Those who gamble on finding a space right next to the entrance are “optimistic.” They drive all the way to the entrance, then backtrack to the closest vacancy. “Prudent” drivers take the middle path. They drive past the first available space, betting on the availability of at least one other space further in. When they find the closest space between cars, they take it. If no spaces exist between the furthest parked car and the entrance, prudent drivers backtrack to the space a meek driver would have claimed straightaway.

Democratic “exit tax” proposals in 2012 (Charles Schumer) and 2015 (Hillary Clinton) had me remembering the Reichsfluchtsteuer, the 25% tax that the Nazis imposed on Jews trying to flee Germany in the 1930s.
Now the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who back a “wealth tax” — Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders — are also both backing Reichsfluchtsteuer-style proposals. “Sanders’ wealth tax plan includes a steep “Exit Tax” similar to that proposed by ewarren,” an economic policy reporter at the Washington Post, Jeff Stein, tweeted yesterday.

This particular ship, the Celebrity Solstice, bound for Alaska’s Inside Passage, holds about 2,800 patrons and looks like the offspring of a jet-age airport and a Las Vegas casino, lightly dosed on acid. Up in the top-floor Sky Observation Lounge, 111 passengers, all varying flavors of libertarian, are assembled for the fourth annual Contra Krugman Cruise, a weeklong meetup for like-minded listeners of the eponymous podcast. As its moniker implies, the show is dedicated to rebutting the Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman’s weekly New York Times column. Its hosts, Tom Woods and Bob Murphy, dissect Keynesian dogma and revel in finding reversals in Krugman’s positions and in plain old partisanship.

In a surprise move Tuesday, a federal judge in Virginia acquitted Bijan Rafiekian, a former business partner of Michael Flynn’s who was convicted in July in a case spun off from the special counsel’s investigation.
Rafiekian, who served as vice chairman of Flynn Intel Group, was convicted July 23 of illegally lobbying on behalf of the Turkish government and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
But Judge Anthony Trenga reversed the jury decision in a 39-page ruling, saying the government’s evidence against Rafiekian “was insufficient as a matter of law” to justify conviction on either count.

38-year-old Sherikia L. Hawkins, a city clerk for the city of Southfield, has been charged with a variety of different election crimes, including falsifying and forging public records. The indictment against Hawkins stated that ballots from the 2018 midterm elections in Hawkins’ precinct were found in the trash. State police investigated and found that records had been altered for almost 200 voters.
Judging by the name, I’d guess she’s a Woman of Color.

Scott Adams has come up with a taxonomy of the various stages of a Trump Impeachable Offense, by analogy to the well-known Stages of Grief:
- Bombshell report in either the New York Times or the Washington Post. ‘We can’t name any of our sources , but it’s A BOMBSHELL!’
- The softening — turns out that the situation isn’t exactly the way it was originally reported.
- The inversion — turns out that whatever took place is perfectly legal and in line with what Presidents are supposed to be doing.
- Carl Bernstein is trotted out to squawk that it’s Worse Than Watergate.
- Mitt Romney is trotted out to show that there’s at least one (nominal) Republican who is Deeply Disturbed by the situation.
- The media try to flog life back in the story by shouting ‘It really happened! It did! You’re talking about it wrong!’
He goes through this about halfway through the linked podcast.

The House is staying busy now that the August recess (such as it was) is over. One of the latest items of business was having the House Judiciary Committee approve that new red flag law everyone has been talking about. But they ran into a bit of a snag when Republicans offered an amendment that would have allowed the addition of anyone whose name appears in a law enforcement gang database to the list. Even if that might sound like common sense to you, the Democrats on the committee found reasons to object and defeated the amendment.

Last month, The New York Times went all-in on born of sin, declaring that every single thing about the U.S. is a direct result of slavery. Take sugar, for example. Your affection for candy bars is racist. Sure, today’s sugar is not the product of slavery. But because it used to be a really long time ago, the mark of (sugar) Cain has forever branded your malted balls. Even your sweet tooth is racist, the Times reasons, because if not for the slaves behind the initial mass production of sugar in the Americas, we might be perfectly content today sucking on lemons and eating a flavorless mush called rootmarm.

You know what kind of grown man uses a straw? The guy who is watching something loud and obnoxious on his phone in public without headphones. In shorts. Like it’s normal. Like he shouldn’t be murdered on the spot.
Kevin Williamson, thank God, doesn’t determine what ‘grown men’ do — as if some guy who shaves his head and arranges his facial hair to resemble a goat’s ass has any room to talk about cultural norms.
I use a straw because I don’t like ice cubes clinking on my teeth. Straws are one of those little conveniences that our ancestors invented to make life easier, which have been transmitted to us down the years, and which elevate us above the animals. Kevin is welcome to pour his drink into a dish and lap it up like the dog he is.
UPDATE: For Straws, against Kevin

From Jefferson and Madison’s republic of yeoman farmers to the suburban homeowners of the postwar era, the notion of dispersed property ownership shaped our democracy. The founders understood the role of small property owners in ancient Athens and the Roman Republic, as well as contemporary examples in such places as the Netherlands. Those who own something — a house, a farm, a small business — tend to be far more engaged with their communities than those who rent or work merely for wages.
This era may now be coming to an end. In the United States, the proportion of land owned by the nation’s 100 largest private landowners grew by nearly 50 percent between 2007 and 2017. In 2007, according to the Land Report, this group owned a combined 27 million acres of land — holdings larger than the entirety of New England.

The term “useful idiot,” often credited to Vladimir Lenin, applies to people supporting a cause or movement injurious to their own self-interest. Nowhere is this more relevant these days than in Silicon Valley, a place dominated by brilliant technologists and marketers who often seem to have the social and political acuity of middle schoolers, as evidenced by their strong support for progressive Democrats poised to destroy the underpinnings of their businesses.

When it comes to the impact of automation (robots, AI, etc.) on jobs, there are two schools of thought: one holds that technology has always created more and better jobs than it destroys, and this will continue to be the case. The other holds that the current wave of automation will destroy far more jobs than it creates, but the solution is to tax the robots and use these revenues to distribute the wealth to everyone who no longer has a livelihood.

Those charges are so often based on the sleazily leaked half-truths and disinformation leaked to them by their compatriots and handlers in the Deep State. Well, one of the reporters behind the hit piece did the work for Team Blasey Ford in an appearance on CNN’s so-called “Reliable Sources” and slimed Keyser’s rebuttal.
