Johnn Hinderaker at Powerline turns over a rock.
Liberals control every newspaper in America, as far as I know, except the Manchester Union Leader. They control CBS, ABC, NBC and every cable network except Fox News. They control what is left of the news magazines, and pretty much every other magazine, too. Only talk radio and the pesky internet lie outside their grasp, so that is where they seek to impose censorship.
But they have a problem: the First Amendment. The government can’t suppress conservative speech on the ground that it is “hate speech,” i.e., something that liberals don’t like. That was recently reaffirmed by a 9-0 decision of the Supreme Court.
So liberals have outsourced censorship of the internet to the tech titans of Silicon Valley.

John Derbyshire does a little mind-picking.
So there was Cuomo doing the soft-shoe shuffle. Our Governor is a sort of grandee of the Democratic Party: son of a former three-term Governor, ex-husband of a Kennedy gal.
But I should say that the phrase “Democratic Party” in my last sentence refers to the oldDemocratic Party, the party of FDR, JFK, Bill Clinton, and John Kerry. Andrew Cuomo, like those other names, is a white guy of European ancestry. Like other white guys in his party, Cuomo has the uncomfortable feeling that the ground is moving under his feet—that the Democratic Party is turning into something different from what it has been though his, and my, lifetime.
…
The Progressive vision is narrow, provincial, and present-centric. The past, according to them, was bad; the present is just tolerable; the future will be radiant.
And that’s about the best summary of the proglodyte vision I’ve ever seen.

The Other McCain lays it out.
America’s triumph in the Cold War, which consigned the Soviet Union’s “evil empire” to the “ash heap of history,” to quote Ronald Reagan, has been followed by a sad retreat from the values that enabled freedom to prevail in that long ordeal. We are today less of a Christian nation than we were when the Berlin Wall collapsed in 1989, and part of the reason for this loss of values is that our nation’s education system is now to a shocking extent controlled by godless Commies. Although they generally do not identity themselves as such, we should be under no illusions about the ideological loyalties of our nation’s university faculties, and the Democrat-controlled public-education bureaucracy. Recall that Sen. Elizabeth Warren — who now wants to “nationalize everything,” as Kevin Williamson says — once taught at prestigious Harvard University, and this should give you a general idea of what sort of latter-day Bolsheviks are now teaching America’s impressionable youth.

Tip #1: Stay away from bears.
If you’re camping or hiking in the woodlands of North America – particularly Canada, Alaska, Washington, Idaho, the Dakotas or Montana – or in parts of northern Europe and Asia, it’s perfectly possibly you could encounter a large bear.
So, obviously, don’t do that.

For years, the Minnesota press, led by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, has covered up for Keith Ellison. It has buried the stories of his long association with the Nation of Islam, his rank anti-semitism, his political radicalism, and, above all, his decades-long support for cop-killers.
It is a little ironic that Ellison’s brush with the “me too” movement may doom his candidacy, when there are far better reasons why he should never get anywhere near the office of Attorney General. Scott detailed Ellison’s long and enthusiastic advocacy for cop killers here. It is a sickening story; to call Keith Ellison depraved would be doing him too much justice. Yet it is a story that so far, Minnesota media have found too hot–or too troubling for the Democratic Party–to handle.
At this point, no one knows what will happen. My prediction, take it for what it is worth, is that Ellison will be forced to step down as the Democrats’ AG nominee. Not because he is a socialist or worse, not because he is a long-time supporter of the Nation of Islam and an anti-Semite, and most important, not because, as a life-long supporter of, and advocate for, those who murder police officers, he is utterly unfit to be the state’s chief law enforcement officer. Rather, because many Minnesota Democrats are bitter about the fact that Al Franken was driven out of office by his Democratic colleagues for far less.

More than a dozen community groups have called on Rep. Bettie Cook Scott (D-Detroit) to apologize for a series of racial slurs sources say she used to describe her primary election opponent, Rep. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit).
Scott is alleged to have referred to Chang as “ching-chang” and “the ching-chong” to multiple voters outside polling precincts during last Tuesday’s election. She’s also said to have called one of Chang’s campaign volunteers an “immigrant,” saying “you don’t belong here” and “I want you out of my country.”

Of course, that’s not what Trump said. Democrats spend most of their time beating up on straw-men because they have nothing else to live for.
Still, even though that’s not what Trump said, there are still a lot of people who believe it, and it’s going to take more than a resolution by a slime-meister like Chuck-You Schumer to convince them otherwise.

Kevin Williamson pulls back the curtain.
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has one-upped socialists Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: She proposes to nationalize every major business in the United States of America. If successful, it would constitute the largest seizure of private property in human history.
Warren’s proposal is dishonestly called the “Accountable Capitalism Act.” Accountable to whom?you might ask. That’s a reasonable question. The answer is — as it always is — accountable to politicians, who desire to put the assets and productivity of private businesses under political discipline for their own selfish ends. It is remarkable that people who are most keenly attuned to the self-interest of CEOs and shareholders and the ways in which that self-interest influences their decisions apparently believe that members of the House, senators, presidents, regulators, Cabinet secretaries, and agency chiefs somehow are liberated from self-interest when they take office through some kind of miracle of transcendence.
Perfectly reasonable, for a socialist.

Obviously her father wasn’t a valuable parent.
A feminist professor at California State University-Fresno recently published an article lamenting that federal programs to promote “responsible fatherhood” among vulnerable men in fact perpetuate “patriarchy,” “gender norms,” and “hegemonic masculinity.”
Sounds good to me.
Professor Randles teaches sociology, reminding me of Thomas Sowell’s quote: “The next time some academics tell you how important diversity is, ask how many Republicans there are in their sociology department.”

Except that THERE ARE NO RISING SEA LEVELS.
At today’s sea level, it would take a very powerful earthquake tipping past magnitude 8.8 to cause widespread tsunami flooding in Macau.
But a half-metre rise in sea level – predicted to occur in the region by 2060 – could more than double the chances of a huge tsunami swamping the territory, according to the research.
A three-foot sea level rise, expected by 2100, would increase the risk up to 4.7 times.
These are PREDICTIONS for which there IS NO ACTUAL EVIDENCE.

Paul Mierngoff at Powerline blows the whistle.
When candidate Donald Trump rolled out his “Make America Great Again” slogan, Hillary Clinton chided him for taking the position that America isn’t great now. But today, New York governor Andrew Cuomo attacked the slogan from the opposite perspective. He said: “We’re not going to make America great again; it was never that great.” He added that America “will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone, and every woman’s full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution.”
The difference between these two takes may simply reflect the fact that Cuomo is more honest than Hillary. I’m not convinced she thinks America is great or ever was. I don’t think Barack Obama does.
However, this much is true: There was a time not very long ago when no mainstream Democrat would publicly deny that America has been great. I’m pretty sure that Andrew Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo, never denied it and would have appalled to hear any Democrat, and certainly his son, make such a declaration.

Grade inflation, the ‘puff pastry’ of modern education.
The A-levels are the tests Brits take to get into university. British secondary education stops at 16, what American’s would call 10th grade; ‘school leaving certificate’ used to be called O-levels and is now called GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education). Those going on to college take two more years (called Sixth Form) and then take A-levels. Like the SAT or ACT, your A-level performance pretty much determines how spiff a university you can get into.
Education in the U.K. is much more centralized and government-controlled than in the U.S.

In modern industrial societies, Marx’s claim that the major division would be among capitalists who control the means of production and proletarians without productive assets other than their own labor has proven to be influential and useful. In these pages (Summer 2017), I have argued that the Marxist conception was usefully modified by James Burnham and others, for whom a bureaucratic, managerial group in both the private and public sectors displaced an older, owner-operator-investor bourgeoisie. In this view, modern advanced industrial societies are divided chiefly among two classes. One is a substantial managerial-professional minority, as large as 30 percent or so if all recipients of college degrees are included in it, but arguably no more than the top 10 or 15 percent. The other is the working class, increasingly working in the nontraded domestic service sector as manufacturing jobs are eliminated by a combination of offshoring and automation.
But a vocation, or a constellation of related vocations, is not in itself a class, any more than an income category is. In ordinary discourse, one is born into a class. What turns a mere vocation or income or wealth category into a class is a high degree of persistence of its membership across generations. The source of hereditary class advantage need not be formal legal privileges, or even inherited wealth; it can also take the form of attitudes, skills, and connections bequeathed by parents to their children.
Thus the best definition of a class, I would suggest, is this: a class is a group of families within a society whose members are disproportionately likely to work in certain vocations and also disproportionately likely to marry and have children with one another. This definition unites the functional and nepotistic aspects of class.
