Rise of the Watermelon

6th June 2017

Read it.

After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, conservatives saw environmentalism as replacement for the bogeyman of communism—or at least that’s what FiftyThirtyEight science reporter Maggie Koerth-Baker declared on NPR’s Science Friday. In the ’90s, she noted, some conservatives started calling environmentalists “watermelons”: “green on the outside, red on the inside.” Host Ira Flatow chuckled disbelievingly.

But Koerth-Baker has her history backwards: Lots of reds did turn green in the 1990s. Unmoored socialists cast about for some other theory explaining how capitalism would destroy itself. They began adopting and expanding upon the arguments of radical environmentalists, who had been arguing that capitalism will collapse because the pollution produced by its heedless overconsumption will build to an ecological breaking point.

And that line of argument is still with us today. For example, activist Naomi Klein asserts that climate science is “the most powerful argument against unfettered capitalism” ever.

What they’re for wanders all over the map, but what they’re against is constant: Free minds and free markets.

Latest Traitor Is — Wait for It — a Bernie Sanders Supporter

6th June 2017

No surprises here.

The 25-year-old woman who stole “Top Secret” documents from the National Security Agency and leaked them to The Intercept appears to be a supporter of Bernie Sanders and other progressive icons, such as Bill Maher and Michael Moore.

Reality Leigh Winner’s apparent social media footprint also shows that she is a supporter of other liberal causes, including the Women’s March and the Islamic Society of North America, the Muslim civil rights group.

When you give your kid a name more suitable for a horse, you’ve got to expect this sort of thing.

Jim Treacher hits the spot:

My advice to young Ms. Winner is to declare that she’s now a man. Make everyone else change their pronoun usage at the drop of a hat. Then, just wait for another Democrat to get elected president and commute her sentence. Go with what works.

The Coming Democratic Civil War

6th June 2017

Joel Kotkin looks ahead.

Even before the election of Donald Trump, and more so afterwards, the dysfunction of the GOP has been glaringly obvious. Yet, despite the miserable favorability ratings for both Trump and the Republicans, those of the Democrats, notes Gallup, also have been dropping, and are nearly identical to that of the Republicans.

What gives? Simply put, the Democrats seem to know only what they are against — Trump — but have provided no clear sense of where they want to take the country. The party, and much of the nation, despises Trump, but there does not seem to be any huge pent-up national demand for the Democrats to take over — at least, not yet.

Part of the problem is major chasms underneath the absurd faux solidarity of the “resistance” movement on the left. These have been largely hidden in the increasingly uniformly pro-Democratic media. These differences extend beyond personal fiefdoms or stylistic differences. They reflect deep divides in terms of class and geography, and will not be easy for the party leadership to reconcile.

Stuck in Traffic? Blame the Planners

6th June 2017

Read it.

In 1982, the Twin Cities had the 35th-worst congestion in the nation. By 2016, it had grown to be the 17th-worst and amount of time the average commuter spent in traffic had quadrupled. If you are stuck in traffic in the Twin Cities, says this new report, don’t blame population growth; blame the Metropolitan Council, the region’s metropolitan planning organization.

The Metropolitan Council’s official attitude is, “We can’t build our way out of congestion, so we will provide alternatives to congestion” in the form of light rail, bike paths, and maybe a few high-occupancy/toll lanes. The council’s 2040 plan has $6.9 billion programmed for transit improvements, $700 million for bike paths, and $700 million for road improvements. That means 8 percent of the funds goes for the 90 percent of the people who drive to work while 83 percent goes for the 6 percent who take transit.

‘It was quasi-religious’: The Great Self-Esteem Con

The flawed yet infectious notion that, in order to thrive, people need to be treated with unconditional positivity first gained traction in the late 80s. Since then, the self-esteem movement has helped transform the way we raise our children – prioritising their feelings of self-worth, telling them they are special and amazing, and cocooning them from everyday consequences.

This is the Face of Canadian “Anti-Fascism”

5th June 2017

Read it.

As reported hereover the weekend, opponents of the M-103 anti-blasphemy motion gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to protest the implementation of sharia in Canada and support free speech. The protesters were peaceful and law-abiding, but they were confronted by a group of about three times as many antifas who were violent and indifferent to legal niceties.

If you live in Ottawa, take a close look at the faces shown here, because you may want to keep a discreet distance from these worthies if you happen to encounter them in the street. In fact, everyone in Ontario and Quebec would do well to remain alert, because these droogs probably get bused to Toronto and Montreal to engage in a bit of ultra-violence at other free-speech events.

As usual, the ‘anti-fascist’ thugs wore black and disguised their faces. Just like, you know, real fascist street thugs.

And yet Trump is the New Hitler.

Liberals: Men Without Chests

5th June 2017

Steven Hayward looks behind the curtain.

“Men without chests” is C.S. Lewis’s great description in The Abolition of Man of the type of human soul that modern relativism would produce. The complete quote is: “We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.” Right now this applies to the increasing number of liberals who are wringing their hands over the fact that we have a problem on college campuses. Do tell!

Bellies, yes; chests, no.

The Most Effective Weapon on the Modern Battlefield Is Concrete

5th June 2017

Read it.

Ask any Iraq War veteran about Jersey, Alaska, Texas, and Colorado and you will be surprised to get stories not about states, but about concrete barriers. Many soldiers deployed to Iraq became experts in concrete during their combat tours. Concrete is as symbolic to their deployments as the weapons they carried. No other weapon or technology has done more to contribute to achieving strategic goals of providing security, protecting populations, establishing stability, and eliminating terrorist threats. This was most evident in the complex urban terrain of Baghdad, Iraq. Increasing urbanization and its consequent influence on global patterns of conflict mean that the US military is almost certain to be fighting in cities again in our future wars. Military planners would be derelict in their duty if they allowed the hard-won lessons about concrete learned on Baghdad’s streets to be forgotten.

I’ll bet you didn’t know that.

CNN Stages Anti-ISIS Protest In London

4th June 2017

Read it.

Mark Antro observed CNN staging a protest by Muslims against ISIS and terrorism, and filmed it. As you watch the video, you can see that this is not a bona fide demonstration that CNN observed and reported on. Rather, the entire event–one could say, the pitifully small event–is being stage-directed by CNN for its cameras, to advance CNN’s narrative. In this case, the story CNN wants to promote is that most Muslims reject extremism. That might be true, but if so, it would be nice to see more than 15 or 20 people participating in a faked event.

It’s all about the Narrative, Larry.

Beef Company Takes ABC to Court Over 2012 ‘Fake News’ Pink Slime Report

4th June 2017

Read it.

Beef Products Inc. is going to court Monday, suing ABC News for report that claimed the company put waste meat products referred to as “pink slime” in processed beef.

“Pink slime” is one of those smear-terms like ‘price gouging’ and ‘black market’ invented by ‘activists’ to look down their nose at stuff of which they disapprove — typically stuff not in accord with The Narrative.

Beef Products says ABC caused $1.9 billion in damages with a 2012 report claiming that a filler product found in most ground beef is actually waste beef trimmings known as lean finely textured beef or LFTB, “once used only in dog food and cooking oil.”

Hold the media accountable for fake news? You should live so long.

The lawsuit claims ABC’s report unnecessarily targeted the food company for safe and legal food. Beef Products makes LFTB from the trimmings of other beef cuts. The bits of meat are heated slightly to separate the fat from the muscle tissue, then sprayed with ammonium hydroxide, which the Food and Drug Administration says is “generally recognized as safe,” to kill bacteria like E. coli. The product is frozen into pink bricks and shipped to other food companies and stores as a filler to combine with higher-quality ground beef.

So it’s basically just lean ground beef, with ammonium hydroxide to make sure people don’t get salmonella.

“This was the opposite of fake news,” ABC lawyer Kevin Baine said. “It was real news of interest to consumers who didn’t know this product was in their ground beef.”

Since it’s also ground beef, any concern on the part of ‘consumers’ would be just scare-mongering on the part of headline-hungry — wait for it — ‘fake news’ journalists.

While ABC’s reporting did not say the product was unsafe to eat, Beef Products claims that the news organization hyped the claim in order to make LFTB sound disgusting.

“There is not a more offensive way of describing a food product than to call it ‘slime,’” a lawyer for Beef Products told the Wall Street Journal.  The company claims ABC used the phrase “pink slime” 137 times in TV broadcasts, online reports and on social media.

Of course they did. They were looking for a ’cause’ in order to ‘make a difference’, like most such cultMarxist bullshit.

When the Coffee Machine Breaks, Life Ceases to Be Worth Living

4th June 2017

Lileks.

To be honest, I was actually upbeat when the coffee machine broke. I looked at the brand-new machine, its lights blinking but unable to excrete a single jot of wonderful java, and I thought: If nothing else, I can get a column out of this.

So I was intent on cashing in on this opportunity. First step: a call to Customer Support, which is lazy columnist gold. We all hate making those calls, right? Those menus: ridiculous. “To hear these instructions in South Ossian, press 0.” Then you’re on hold for the rest of the afternoon.

In the old days, our parents took a defective coffeemaker right back to Harold’s Appliances on Main Street, walked up to a counter and said, “It broke, Harold.” And he just handed them another one. But his store closed when Wal-Mart came in, and Harold set himself on fire on Main Street, shouting, “Are you happy now? Is this what you wanted?” And people just walked past, ashamed, because they’d bought a Mr. Coffee at the Wal-Mart and felt responsible, somehow. On the other hand, Harold’s old shop is now a bakery and they have fantastic Cronuts.

Brit Reporter: Here Are the Four Things the UK Plans to Change in Order Fight Terrorism

4th June 2017

Read it.

Notably missing: Stop importing Third World Muslim tribalists and get rid of the ones already in Britain.

‘Combat the ideology’ will fail when the focus is on ‘extremism’ rather than ‘Islam’; there’s no way to nail that dial at an acceptable setting in an individual Muslim. Read the news stories about people who knew the latest jihadi attackers before the attack.

‘Clamping down on propaganda on the Internet’ won’t work because clamping down on anything on the Internet doesn’t work. China has been trying to do that for decades, without success. If a Communist dictatorship can’t do it. a Crustian bleeding-heart-proglodyte government isn’t going to be able to.

‘Remove safe spaces’ is the same tired old theme the British government has been bleating out, also for decades, without doing anything effective about it. The current police force is more likely to arrest normal Britons for Islamophobia than Muslims for acting the way they act back in the Dar al-Islam.

‘Update strategy as threat evolves’ means ‘figure out new and interesting ways to wring our hands and point our fingers without actually doing anything effective because that would be raaaaaaacist.’ Watch for it.

Positive Populism: Steve Hilton Talks Trump, Immigration And Terrorism

4th June 2017

Read it.

Most people are not actually ideological. That’s not how they think of things. They just look at what goes on in government and think what are these people talking about? What are they wasting their time on? Why doesn’t anything get done? Why is it the same sort of people seem to be in charge whoever we vote for? Why is it always good for them, but my life seems to just get tougher?

Guide for the perplexed:

  1. Government doing something I don’t like (Hell, anybody doing something i don’t like) = Fascism
  2. Government doing something the benefits me = Populism

Keep these points in mind and you’ll understand the news. Miss them and the news will look as if the world has gone mad.

Is the Pope Catholic?

3rd June 2017

ZMan is not afraid to ask the hard questions.

The criticism of the Pope on economic grounds says more about the bottomless ignorance of modern conservatism than it does the Pope or the Church. For the Church, any church for that matter, economics are downstream from theology. In fact, economic positions should only matter in so far as how they advance the particular theological points of the faith. Catholicism long attachment to the sovereign authority of the people, naturally leads it to embrace national economics over global economics.

That bit is sure to get some spergy responses from Catholics and Christians, but we’ll deal with that in the comments. The point to take away is that it is perfectly plausible for the Pope to be within Catholic doctrine and oppose the current fads in global economics and not be a communist. The fact that secular defenders of globalism are more hive minded than the clerical critics, suggests globalism has become more of an all-consuming religion than Catholicism. It is international fascism.

It’s not just a question about the Pope being Catholic, or at least prioritizing Catholic theology over his personal theology. The question is whether the Catholic Church is still Catholic. It used to be that the Church was at the forefront of social issues like abortion and homosexual marriage. Today, it is rare to hear anything from the Church on social issues. Instead, in the US at least, the Church is more concerned with maintaining their refugee rackets and defending Gaia from your lawnmower.

Self-Hatred and Transgender Suicide

3rd June 2017

The Other McCain turns over a rock.

Not long ago, my friend Cynthia Yockey and I were discussing the transgender cult when she rather casually said something that struck me as profound: Transgenderism is a sort of suicide, involving the destruction of a hated self. She just threw that idea out in the midst of our phone conversation, but after the call was over, the truth of what she had said stuck with me. After all, what is more basic to our sense of self than being either male or female? And somewhere in the bizarre psychology of transgenderism there must be a profound alienation from the patient’s authentic self. Life is tough, and anyone might become discouraged by a sense of failure, but it takes an extreme kind of discouragement to feel you are so hopelessly doomed as a male that you could improve your life by discarding yourself, so to speak, and becoming an artificial simulacrum of a female (or vice-versa). Indeed, this is a sort of suicide, and yet one of the arguments most often heard from transgender activists is to blame the high suicide rate among transgender people on their opponents. This idea — that transgender “treatment” is the only alternative to suicide — is quite frequently used to promote “acceptance” of transgenderism among children. This is simply emotional blackmail.

The reason proglodytes are so invested in the whole ‘transgender’ thing is because their belief system is based on the notion that humans are perfectible, and therefore anything that smacks of ‘no, you can’t change this’ is something that would destroy the cornerstone of the Narrative, hence is CrimeThink.

I Got Your Death Panels, Right Here

2nd June 2017

Read it. And watch the video.

“It’s a lot cheaper to grab a couple drugs and kill you than it is to provide you with life sustaining therapy,” Dr. Brian Callister of Reno, NV told the Patients’ Rights Action Fund. “Simple as that.”  His words appeared in a sobering video PRAF released exposing the shockingly limited treatment options available to terminally ill patients.

One particular option, however, is becoming increasingly available to patients – that is, if you can call it an ‘option’ at all.  Physician assisted suicide, now legal in California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Washington State, and Washington, D.C., has been recommended more and more frequently.  Yet the healthcare professionals recommending assisted suicide are not necessarily doctors.  Insurance companies are beginning to cash-in on the fact that legalized assisted suicide proves less expensive than covering life-saving procedures. “They want to do whatever the least costly thing is,” Dr. Callister told PRAF.

And if we get a government-paid-for health care system, it will only get worse. Government bureaucrats will not hesitate to kill people who are only going to die anyway rather than spend money on them that could more productively buy votes to keep them in office.

Turkey Seeks Arrest of NBA Player, Says He Belongs to a ‘Terrorist Organization’

2nd June 2017

Read it.

A Turkish court has reportedly issued an arrest warrant for Oklahoma Thunder center Enes Kanter, charging him with “being a member of a terrorist organization.” The 25-year-old Kanter, a Turkish national who has been living in the United States since 2009, has been an outspoken critic of the increasingly authoritarian Turkish government. He is also a supporter of Fethullah Gulen, a former imam and former ally of Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

Seems to me that he’s been in this country long enough to apply for citizenship; nothing could be clearer than the superiority of this country over that in which he was born.

After the failed coup, Erdogan initiated a massive purge of academics, bureaucrats, members of the judiciary, and members of the media, claiming with little to no evidence that thousands of people were colluding with what the Turkish government now calls the “Gulen Terrorist Organization.” Kanter’s family in Turkey has publicly disowned him, with his father apologizing to Erdogan “and the Turkish people” for “having such a son.” That didn’t keep Kanter’s dad from losing his job at a university in Istanbul.

If Mexicans can do the ‘chain immigration’ thing, no reason why this family couldn’t.

Funny how Muslims don’t hesitate to engage in behavior that they denounce as ‘Islamophobia’ on the part of anybody else.

By all rights, this should be the climate change/Kathy Griffin/Scott Pelley/covfefe edition. Those are just the big stories that broke in the last 48 hours. The news cycle is just as insane as the news media covering it.

Trump has ditched the Paris climate non-treaty (never approved by the Senate). Nearly talentless comedian Kathy Griffin has dropped from the D List so far that she’s nearly caught me in F+ celebrity land and even lefty CNN dropped her. (After Squatty Potty!) CBS cut anti-Trump anchor Scott Pelley from its evening news and sent him into 60 Minutes exile. And the media went nuts over another Trump tweet — obsessing over a typo.

And on a day of a huge victory for Trump by exiting the Paris Climate Accords, thrilling conservatives (even ones who opposed him), Alternet pretends Trump support is weakening. “Could Donald Trump’s Base Finally Be Turning on the President?” it asked.

Nope. But it shows how out of touch the alt-lefty media has become.

The Chicken Little Democrats

2nd June 2017

The Other McCain has seen it all before.

This over-the-top reaction is indicative of how the Democrats and their media allies have become heavily invested in “climate change” as a crisis requiring government action. Having lived long enough to remember many previous examples of this liberal crisis-mongering behavior — e.g., Paul Ehrlich and The Population Bomb — I have good reason to be skeptical of alarmist “climate change” rhetoric. One reason young people are so easily convinced to vote Democrat is that young people haven’t had enough experience to acquire this kind of skepticism. Only after you have spent decades watching liberals gin up fears of a “crisis” (which they then exploit as an excuse to elect Democrats) do you recognize the familiar pattern Thomas Sowell describes in his book The Vision of the Anointed.

How the Self-Esteem Craze Took Over America

2nd June 2017

Read it.

It seems mawkish now, even by the standards of children’s books, but The Lovables was published as a runaway cultural trend was cresting across North America: the self-esteem craze. If you grew up, or raised a child, during the 1980s or 1990s, you almost certainly remember this sort of material, as well as goofy classroom exercises focusing on how special each individual child was. A certain ethos took hold during this time: It was the job of schools to educate, yes, but also to instill in children a sense of their own specialness and potential.

It wasn’t just schoolkids. During this span, just about everyone, from CEOs to welfare recipients, was told — often by psychologists with serious credentials — that improving their self-esteem could, as The Lovables put it, unlock the gates to more happiness, better performance, and every kind of success imaginable. This was both a personal argument and a political one: The movement, which had its epicenter in California, argued that increasing people’s self-esteem could reduce crime, teen pregnancy, and a host of other social ills — even pollution.

It was not a pretty sight.

They can start by getting rid of their cars in favor of bikes and horses, moving to smaller homes, doing without air conditioning, keeping their homes at 50 degrees in the winter, bathing and washing clothes in cold water, growing and raising their own foodstuffs (to eliminate transportation-based emissions), reading by candle light, and throwing out all of their electrical appliances — even including their smart phones, which rely on electrically powered systems.

Which, of course, will never happen. Watch climate-change hypocrites like Leonardo diCaprio and AlGore drive SUVs from their private jets to their U.N.-sponsored meetings if you want to see the Crust in action.

Paris Agreement: Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Goldman Sachs Condemn Donald Trump’s Withdrawal

2nd June 2017

Read it.

Thus making it quite clear that the Paris agreement was not about climate so much as it was about corporate cronyism. (Goldman Sachs cares about climate change? Really? Really?)

How to Build a Fallout Shelter

2nd June 2017

The New York Times has some advice. What do they know that you don’t?

“The most important thing is to build underground,” says Cédric Vuilleumier, an engineer for the Federal Office for Civil Protection in Switzerland, where all citizens are legally guaranteed a spot in a bomb shelter. Packed earth insulates against radiation and blast waves, but don’t go deeper than 10 feet; if your exits (make two) become blocked in the blast, you may need to dig yourself out.

American Progressivism as Nihilistic Death Cult

2nd June 2017

Zman lays it out.

There are two issues at work here. One is the self-awareness, or the lack of self-awareness, we see with Progressives. We’re all used to seeing Progs preach against something they are doing to excess. Google “the opposite rule of liberalism” and see what comes up. The other issue is about agency. These tactics we see them employ to corrupt public institutions suggests a level of plotting and scheming that strains credulity. On the other hand, the pattern suggests agency. They plan their work and work their plan.

The first part is probably the easiest one. People in a cult are not sitting around saying to one another, “This is a great cult. I’m really enjoying my time as a cult member.” Similarly, no one sits down one day and says, “I think I want to join a cult.” People in a cult think the beliefs and rules of their cult are perfectly logical and rational. They provide an explanation and framework for understanding the world. People on the outside, however, see the rules and beliefs of a cult as weirdly irrational and maybe even dangerous.

The other thing about people in cults is they join from self-loathing. They hate themselves and seek to swap their hated individual identity with that of the group. It’s why they will savagely defend their group like a mother defending their young. It’s self-defense. The group is them and they are the group. Therefore, any criticism of the group, or the beliefs of the group, is the same as an attack on the member. It is why they consider criticism the same as violence. From their point of view, it is violence, violence against their identity.

Nakba: The Source of Arab-Israeli Conflict

2nd June 2017

Read it.

Op-ed: UNRWA’s success has been in transforming itself into the guardian of Palestinian refugees’ isolation, preserving the uniqueness of their identity as an entity that cannot be assimilated into any Arab country, but only into what is perceived as Palestine.

The U.N. is a source for instability and conflict wherever it goes, from spreading cholera in Haiti to raping children in Africa to keeping the ‘Palestinian’ problem alive for over sixty years.

Chicago Pizzeria Lambasted for ‘Racist’ Dress Code That Bans Hoodies, Baggy Pants

2nd June 2017

Read it.

A Chicago pizzeria and bar is coming under fire for instituting an insanely complex “dress code” that some patrons are calling racist.

I’m a racist, you’re a racist, he’s a racist, she’s a racist, wouldn’t you like to be a racist too?

The Bottled Blonde, in Chicago’s upscale River North neighborhood, says it requires a “high standard of dress at all times” but especially at night, when the “casual neighborhood concept of restaurant & nightlife” turns into a nightclub. The list of banned items is practically two feet long, and includes everything from “beanies,” to “manpris,” to “athletic wear,” “jean jackets” and “men’s jewelry.”

Doesn’t leave much. Don Draper, maybe.

Immediately, the bar was excoriated by social media users as “racist,” with one hyperbolic Facebook commenter even calling the list evidence of a “new Jim Crow.” Another accused Bottled Blonde of contributing to the breakdown of the moral order across the country.

Cue SJW meltdown. You knew it had to happen.

There are, indeed, quite a few items listed in Bottled Blonde’s dress code that give rise to the idea they’re attempting to exclude minorities. Prohibitions against baggy pants, expensive sneakers, hoodies and single-color clothing, target gang members, but they also target minorities.

I doubt seriously that Barack and Michelle would be turned away, so ‘target minorities’ is just a politically tendentious lie. It targets ‘gangstas’ and thugs, and if a large number of ‘minorities’ fit that bill, whose fault is that?

The Evil Spirits of St. Louis

1st June 2017

Read it.

A federal grand jury has indicted a batch of culture-enriching convenience store owners in the St. Louis area for trafficking in drugs and contraband cigarettes. You’ll notice a strong correlation between the list of names and the adherents of the Religion of Peace. As Matt Bracken said concerning this story, “Moslems think selling drugs to kafirs is a hoot. Like raping our daughters.”

ISIS: A History

1st June 2017

Read it.

The rapid rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2013-14 has attracted the attention of a large number of researchers and has already led to many books on the story of the organization and its significance. Gerges of the London School of Economics and Political Science does an admirable job of locating ISIS within broader contexts of both Middle East societal realities and of prevalent political ideas within the Arab world. The book, nevertheless, suffers from the major drawback of similar books: the impossibility of knowing the trajectory of events after the time of writing resulting in the potential, rapid obsolescence of the work.
