Europeans Do Not Want Muslim Asylum Seekers

9th October 2016

Read it.

An academic study about the attitudes of European citizens has concluded that most Europeans prefer not to allow any Muslim immigrants into their countries. Common sense would suggest the same result to the average person, but common sense seems to be distributed in inverse proportion to the number of letters appended to one’s surname.

It’s like commissioning an opinion poll to discover how people would feel about falling into a bed of stinging nettles.

But such is academia.

The African Slave Trade: The Islamic Connection

8th October 2016

Read it.

Points out that ‘Black Muslim’ is the moral equivalent of ‘Jewish Nazi’.

As many of our readers know, Gates of Vienna finds Emmet Scott’s research into the history of Islam’s darker corners, largely unexamined by Western scholars, to be a sorely-needed remedy for the current obfuscation of authentic Islamic history. Thus, faux-“movements” such as #BlackLivesMatter, funded by Soros or those like him, sadly cheat African Americans of the full story regarding Islam’s brutal treatment of Africans. Just like the slavery that preceded it, BLM cheats people of a reality based on factual information, trading it for the easy answer of deep resentment fueled by misinformation.

The Economics Nobel Isn’t Really A Nobel

8th October 2016

Read it.

But you wouldn’t know that from looking at it.

But, technically, there is no Nobel Prize in economics.2 Instead, there is the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. It was first awarded in 1969 and is named not after a person, but after the central bank of Sweden — the Sveriges Riksbank — which funds it. The Nobel Foundation doesn’t pay out the award or choose the winner (though the winner is chosen in accordance with the same principles used by the Nobel Foundation), but it does list the prize on its website along with the Nobels, tracks winners the same as Nobel laureates, and even promotes the prize alongside its own. Members of the Nobel family have spoken out against the award.

When Zombies, Aliens, and Felons Steal Our Votes

7th October 2016

Read it.

People may expect zombies to be wandering the streets on Halloween, but they certainly don’t expect them to start casting ballots a week later. Yet in Colorado, dead voters’ ballots are cropping up in the vote counts.

CBS4, a Denver TV station, identified multiple cases of dead men and women in the state voting, with dozens of other deceased individuals still on the rolls. Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams confirmed these instances and both state and county investigations have been launched.

This comes on top of a report back in May by another CBS station in Los Angeles that found a similar problem in Southern California, with some zombie voters repeatedly voting from the grave years after they died.

But of course we know that voter fraud is a myth, a mirage, a chimera, a transparent excuse to require some form of identification and thereby deny black people the vote because black people, merely because they are black, are unable to obtain any form of picture ID whatsoever in this racist/sexist/homophobic/cisnormative/patriarchal/meanie society.

First farm to grow veg in a desert using only sun and seawater

7th October 2016

Sunshine and seawater. That’s all a new, futuristic-looking greenhouse needs to produce 17,000 tonnes of tomatoes per year in the South Australian desert.

It’s the first agricultural system of its kind in the world and uses no soil, pesticides, fossil fuels or groundwater. As the demand for fresh water and energy continues to rise, this might be the face of farming in the future.

An international team of scientists have spent the last six years fine-tuning the design – first with a pilot greenhouse built in 2010; then with a commercial-scale facility that began construction in 2014 and was officially launched today.

Morals & the Servile Mind

5th October 2016

Read it.

My concern with democracy is highly specific. It begins in observing the remarkable fact that, while democracy means a government accountable to the electorate, our rulers now make us accountable to them. Most Western governments hate me smoking, or eating the wrong kind of food, or hunting foxes, or drinking too much, and these are merely the surface disapprovals, the ones that provoke legislation or public campaigns. We also borrow too much money for our personal pleasures, and many of us are very bad parents. Ministers of state have been known to instruct us in elementary matters, such as the importance of reading stories to our children. Again, many of us have unsound views about people of other races, cultures, or religions, and the distribution of our friends does not always correspond, as governments think that it ought, to the cultural diversity of our society. We must face up to the grim fact that the rulers we elect are losing patience with us.

NJ Cop Doubles Pension After Spending Nine Years on Paid Leave

5th October 2016

Read it.

Despite not having to show up for work since June 2007, Manuel Avila received periodic increases in pay, managed to double his monthly pension and qualified for free healthcare for the rest of his life at the expense of city taxpayers.

Avila qualified for all those benefits while spending the past nine years on paid leave from the Paterson, New Jersey, police department because he was under investigation for having sex with a female prisoner at the city’s jail. It gets worse, though, because that crime would never have happened if Avila’s bosses hadn’t already been trying to give his retirement benefits a little boost.

Mom Asks Cops to Help Persuade Her 12-Year-Old to Go to School. They Arrest Her.

5th October 2016

Read it.

A Connecticut mom who was having trouble convincing her 12-year-old to go to school left her home at 9:30 a.m. after locking the boy out. She called the cops to ask them to come persuade him, while she headed off to an appointment.

Inviting the cops into your family life? Huge mistake. I’m sure you can guess what happened next.

The mom was arrested and charged with “risk of injury to a child.” According to the Middletown Patch, she was released on bond and has an October 3 court date.

I’m sure that will make the family so much more functional. Now the mom, Tamika Jackson, needs a lawyer and has a fine or possibly jail time staring down at her. And I really doubt this is making her son a whole lot easier to deal with.

From Orwell to Gladwell and Back

5th October 2016

Steve Sailer looks at trends.

Almost by definition, the powerful in the future will still continue to exercise dominion over the minds of men, but their methods of manipulation will change.

The technology of power is moving from the past’s emphasis on privacy and concealment toward more contemporary techniques of diversion, bias, misconception, and willful stupidity. The crude methods that George Orwell summed up in his image of the incinerator-chute “memory hole” are growing into more sophisticated devices for providing the public with misleading frameworks for mentally organizing (or rationalizations for simply ignoring) the overload of available facts, thus making it harder to remember or understand politically inconvenient knowledge.

The memory hole, however, isn’t the only technique for regulating ideas. Among professional journalists, a trend is to take refuge in pedantic obscurantism about the meaning of terms. For example, Donald Trump’s reference to Alicia’s notorious tape of sex with a fellow reality-show participant as a “sex tape” has been widely denounced as totally lacking in verification, even though you can watch it yourself in ten seconds.

The shocking admission by the liberal president went unreported by ABC Tuesday, while CBS and NBC aided in playing it down that evening.

Days after a Hungarian referendum smacked down European Union (EU) migrant quotas, the rebellion against open borders and economic migration grows stronger in Europe.

Though the referendum is not technically valid due to insufficient voter participation, it passed with 98 percent approval, prompting Hungarian PM Viktor Orban to propose a constitutional amendment to stop refugee resettlement unless the National Assembly — Hungary’s parliament — approves.

And in the Czech Republic, President Milos Zeman is calling for the expulsion of all economic migrants, a number likely in the hundreds of thousands.

The Reporting of Trump’s PTSD Comments Shows Why His Supporters Hate the Media

4th October 2016

Read it.

Monday’s coverage of Donald Trump’s speech to veterans is a prime illustration of a trend noticed in September by Salena Zito over at The Atlantic: Some reporters and headline writers are taking Trump’s comments very literally rather than attempting to address the substance or trying to plumb what he’s really getting at. Trump’s supporters are the exact opposite—they’re interpreting what he actually means from his rather inarticulate way of saying what he has to say. The gulf between the two cultures has inflamed the anger of Trump supporters over how the media behaves.

Left Wing Governments Love the Poor

4th October 2016

A left wing government might not want to pass policies to educate the masses or open markets to small business firms because such policies are likely to be successful and in the process create a class of skilled workers and petty bourgeoisie who will vote against the left-wing party and its policies of income redistribution. By keeping its constituents poor, the left-wing party keeps its constituents beholden because only the left-wing party will support income redistribution.

Hey, Regulators. Hands Off Child Care!

4th October 2016

Read it.

The experts want us to entrust our kids to expensive, micromanaged strangers rather than pay our friends and neighbors to look after them.

Of course. What could go wrong?

Oh no! Why would anybody entrust their children to an illegal shadowy underworld (as cool as that sounds)? Well, it turns out that “most of the unregulated providers are known to the parents—a neighbor or a friend—and the convenience is attractive. Parents of infants are also sometimes hesitant to leave their babies with people they have only just met, the specialists said.” In addition, unregulated day care is cheaper, “undercutting licensed home providers by as much as $150 per week.”

So… entrust your beloved children to expensive strangers, or inexpensive friends and neighbors. It’s so hard to decide.

The End of an Odyssey – Homer’s Epic Is Finally Pinned Down

4th October 2016

Read it.

Generations of classicists have pored over the many lines of Homer’s epic description of the long journey taken by the hero Odysseus to his home island of Ithaca. Now two scholars have found evidence to support the idea that one line, in the poem’s 20th book, refers to a total solar eclipse that occurred on 16 April 1178 BC – the day when Odysseus returned home to kill his wife’s suitors. If true, this would date the fall of Troy itself to precisely 1188 BC.

Just in case you were wondering. I know I was.

Syria: The Rebellion Crumbles

4th October 2016

Read it.

The Assad government is clearly defeating the 2011 rebellion. This is being done with the help of Russia, Iran and a temporary anti-ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) coalition that includes NATO, Turks, Arab Gulf states and Kurdish separatists. ISIL is likely to disappear as a major factor by early 2017 as the two major ISIL held cities (Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in eastern Syria) are about to be attacked and cleared of ISIL control. That will remove a major (over a third) of the rebel combat capability in Syria. Turkish troops entered Syria in late August to clear the ISIL and Kurdish groups from northern Syria. All this has weakened the rebels sufficiently to enable to Syrian army to advance against Aleppo and against rebels operating outside the capital (Damascus) since 2012. Turkey has offered to get involved in the offensive against Raqqa. Government forces are on their way towards regaining control of the southern and Iraqi borders by early 2017.

Obama Plans to Circumvent Congress and Bail Out Big Insurers

4th October 2016

Read it.

The Obama administration is set to use an obscure Treasury Department fund to bail out big insurance companies that were complicit in the president’s illegal effort to save Obamacare. So reports the Washington Post, though not in these terms. It took Christoper Jacobs at the Federalist to explain what’s really going on.

Most readers will recall that in 2013, millions of Americans received notices informing them that their existing health insurance plan would disappear once Obamacare’s major provisions took effect. President Obama’s “if you like your health care plan you can keep your health care plan” mantra was exposed as a lie.

In response, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) agreed to ignore the requirements of Obamacare and allow people to keep their prior coverage. Insurers could permit individuals who purchased coverage after the law’s enactment but before October 2013 to keep their plan for a few more months (later extended until December 2017).

But, as Jacob explains, this move, in addition to being unlawful, placed insurers in an untenable financial position. Healthy individuals kept their existing plans and stayed out of the Obamacare risk pool, while sicker individuals signed up for Obamacare in drove. Because insurers hadn’t anticipated the Obama administration’s rule change that produced this phenomenon, they had substantially under-priced their Obamacare products.
