Planting Trees Is Racist

3rd February 2012

Read it.

The Jewish National Fund (JNF) was established with the hope to help the birth of the State of Israel. JNF plants trees for forest development in Israel, creates parks, battles forest fires, is responsible for soil conservation, pioneers innovative solutions to help Israel’s water supply, among other notable work.

The “Stop the JNF Campaign” alleges that the Jewish National Fund “was instrumental in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in the 1948 Nakba, and continues to play a central role in maintaining Israel’s regime of apartheid.” It calls for the revocation of JNF’s charity and to isolate the group by breaking all ties with it.

Despite its shrill and nonsensical premise, the “Stop the JNF Campaign” has garnered support from organizations across the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries around the world. It also has spread to American and Canadian college campuses.

Bring Back the Death Penalty, Says South Africa Medical Chief

3rd February 2012

Read it.

The head of the South African Medical Association has called for the return of the death penalty after one of the country’s senior dermatologists was gunned down by carjackers in the capital Pretoria.

South Africans are lucky they no longer suffer under the boot of the racist white former regime.

Thank God for the U.N. and the international community, or who knows what kind of hell they would be living in now.

Insult and honour: Tribal predators hunting down newlyweds in Karachi

3rd February 2012

Read it.

Back home, Z and N saw their siblings dragged outside, shot in broad daylight, and buried at night without a funeral—so that their family could continue to live with ‘honour’ in the village and amid the clan.

Now in Karachi, the couple hides in a one-room house in a wholly unfamiliar neighbourhood. They fear a similar fate.

“My family declared us karo kari just because I married of my own choice,” said 23-year-old Z, bursting into tears. “We have come to Karachi for protection.”

Reminder for the dimwitted: Islam is an oppressive totalitarian ideology under the guise of a religion, with which no co-existence is possible.

School Holidays Are a Pointless Relic of the Past

2nd February 2012

Read it.

The 9am to 3.30pm day, with six-week summer holidays, is not only no longer relevant to our lives, but also puts significant and unnecessary strain on teachers, parents and children.

The roots of the scheduling rest in our agricultural heritage, when families required their children’s labour in the summer to pick fruit and farm the land. As far as I’m aware, not one of our intake has toiled in the fields in the past century. Rather, they spend their summer forgetting what they have learnt during term, getting into mischief and worse. The reasoning behind a 3.30pm finish was largely the same: children were needed to help at home, with cleaning, cooking and laundry. Nowadays the chores consist of little more than turning on the dishwasher.

Commerce Department Moves to Destroy Green Jobs

2nd February 2012

Read it.

Unsurprisingly, protectionism would raise the cost of solar in the U.S., causing job losses. According to a new report by the Brattle Group, tariffs could eliminate upwards of 50,000 jobs. Depending on the size of the tariff (the Brattle Group examined the effects of 50 and 100 percent tariffs), costs for solar consumers would increase anywhere from $621 million to $2.6 billion over the next three years. In addition, if China retaliates by imposing its own tariffs on American solar products, another 11,000 net jobs could be lost.

So to recap: Green jobs destroy other jobs. And now the Obama administration may destroy green jobs.

Hey, we’re from the government, and we’re here to help. Really.

Vikings Celebrate Norse Heritage in Europe’s Biggest Fire Festival

1st February 2012

Read it.

Europe’s biggest fire festival at Up Helly Aa in Lerwick, Shetland, occurs on the last Tuesday of January each year.

Almost 1000 costumed ”guizers”, wearing winged helmets, sheepskins and carrying axes and shields, march through the streets of the town to recreate its ancient past.

The procession is led by the Jarl Squad which earlier arrived in a Viking longboat.

They were going to sack a monastery on the mainland but decided that they didn’t want to be accused of homophobia.

And, of course, we have pictures.

Microsoft, Enough With the Ribbon Already

1st February 2012

Read it.

It’s good to know that in this age of immediate and easy customer feedback that there are still companies that steadfastly refuse to listen to the people who have to use their products. Case in point: Microsoft.

Microsoft is a poster child for the programming approach ‘what programmers want is what ordinary customers want’.

If you haven’t been following this saga, Microsoft revealed a while back that the Ribbon found in Micosoft Office and other MS programs like WordPad and Paint is now coming to Windows Explorer as well. Did you need those extra pixels at the top of the screen? Too bad for you.

Buy a bigger monitor, you hoser. Get with the new millennium.

“Our view is that we do need to move the user interface forward and accept that a vocal set of customers are just not happy with the direction we’re going.”

I have never wanted to switch to Mac so badly in my life.

Buwah-hah-hah! Come to the appliance side, young Skywalker.

“We remind folks that there are third-party tools available… that provide a number of different interface paradigms. We do embrace the notion that third-party tools play an important part in the Windows experience.”

Yes, they do, because you keep making stupid decisions.

Sort of the way disinfectant plays a part in the medical experience.

UK: Muslim Girl ‘Attacked by Siblings for Kiss’

1st February 2012

Read it.

Muslim teenager Shamima Akhtar was kidnapped, imprisoned and had her hair cut off after her family saw her kiss a white man on her 18th birthday, a court has heard.

Will the Islamophobia never cease?

The jury heard how an “extremely aggressive and threatening” Mohammed-Abdul grabbed Mr Pain by the neck as Miss Akhtar was “firmly escorted” to the car and thrown in.

The car was driven back to the family home in Basingstoke, Hants, where it’s alleged she was dragged onto the sofa, called a whore and a prostitute and then had her waist-length hair cut to her neck by her two older sisters.

The jury heard how Shamima was punched by her sister Nadiya and overheard her brother on the phone, saying “Get the gun, I need the boys tonight.”

He is then alleged to have presented his sister with two knives and a hammer and asked her to “pick one to be used” on her and “one to be used on her lover boy”, Winchester Crown Court heard.

Boy, just can’t get enough of that cultural diversity! Just think of how these people are improving our lives! Broadening our perspectives! Exposing us to other ways of doing things! And (sometimes) killing us!

Pentagon Unable to Account for Missing Iraqi Millions

1st February 2012

Read it.

The Pentagon doesn’t know what happened to more than $100 million in cash held at Saddam Hussein’s palace in Baghdad during the Iraq war, according to a new report by the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.

What’s more, the Pentagon can’t find documents to explain what it spent as much as $1.7 billion on from funds held on behalf of the Iraqi government by the New York Federal Reserve, the report says.

Yeah, I really want the government in charge of our health care. Think of the efficiency! Think of the savings! Think of how much better everything will be!
