A Japanese scientist named Masanori Fukushima, a professor emeritus at Kyoto University, recently caused a major controversy when he appeared on television and upbraided the country’s medical establishment for its dishonesty and negligence concerning the experimental mRNA treatment intended to mitigate the effects of infection with the Wuhan Coronavirus. He particularly excoriated them for ignoring the evidence of serious adverse side effects, including death, from the vax.

In these willfully ignorant times, the powers that be seem, in their haste to be politically correct, to forget that America fought its bloodiest war to end human bondage. Almost three-quarters of a million men died, yet the Civil War is being refought with fact-purging propaganda that makes cartoon villains of great American soldiers, while one group of citizens is robbed of their heritage in order to please another.

Specifically, white Toyota Land Cruisers.
That white Land Cruiser you saw on the news last night? Chances are it came through here. The back of shot cars seen in every report from war zones and aid programmes to disaster relief and third world development projects? At one time they probably called this home. Around 650 vehicles – more specifically 650 white Toyotas – leave here every month destined for global hotspots. Welcome to Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings (TGS), the world’s most remarkable car dealership.
“We don’t really think of them as cars,” TGS co-chief executive Jonathan Gourlay tells me. “We’re just giving our customers a tool that does a job, whether that’s feeding children or delivering medicines.” You might think, like me, that the 70 Series Land Cruiser is utterly cool and want one very badly, but cool plays no role here – this is transport at its most fundamental. Simplicity, capability and reliability overrule everything. “If you look back 25 years, there were a few players in this market,” Gourlay continues. “There was Land Rover, there was Nissan and Mitsubishi, but gradually they’ve focused on building what I’d call ‘first world’ vehicles for Europe and North America. But Toyota still builds a 4.2-litre non-turbo diesel. You can’t register a new one in Europe because of its emissions, but it doesn’t go wrong and any mechanic can fix it in the field because there’s no electronics around it. You don’t need diagnostic tools, you just need to know how an engine works.”
I’d be more interested in white Toyota pickups, the ones that appear in the news every night loaded with Turd World anti-aircraft guns.

A new government in Italy was elected partly because of promises to do something about the people smuggling from North Africa used corrupt North African governments. Italian gangsters and EU (European Union) countries far from the Mediterranean back NGOs (non-government organizations) which operate boats to take the illegal migrants directly to European (mainly Italian) ports where the migrants are deposited and claim asylum. According to EU rules that means they can stay, often in Italy. This becomes a problem for local Italians who are not prepared to absorb so many migrants, who become an economic burden for Italy and contribute to a rising crime rate.
The new government in Italy refused to allow an NGO “rescue boat” to unload its 230 passengers in Italy. For a while the NGOs were able to land their illegal migrants in Malta, which lies between North Africa and Italy. Malta joined the EU in 2003 and found that EU rules obliged it to accept illegal migrants from North Africa who were picked up by NGO rescue boats and taken to the nearest EU nation where they were they could claim asylum. This was quite a burden for Malta, with a population of only half a million. In contrast Italy has 60 million and France 65 million. In 2015 Malta began refusing to allow the NGO boats to land, so the NGO boats took their passengers to Italy, The EU criticized Malta but did not try to force Malta to accept the illegals. At first Italy went along with accepting the illegals but eventually that became a political issue in Italy and now the NGO boats must take their passengers to France, which protested when 230 illegals were landed at a French port. The NGO boats are sponsored by EU members far from the problem, mainly Norway and Germany. Most EU members would prefer that all these illegals land in Italy, where most of the migrants will stay and become a problem for Italy but not the rest of the EU nations.

Broadly speaking, the recent electoral tremors have been based on an education split, graduates voting for the status quo, non-graduates seeking to overturn it. In Brexit, 29 of the 30 areas with the highest proportion of graduates voted Remain, while the cohort overall split 57%-43% compared to 48%-52% for the country as a whole. Hilary Clinton won graduates by 11% while losing non-graduates by 7%. By the 2020 election, the gap had widened to 14% and 15% respectively. In the recent French election, there was an almost linear relationship between education level and voting, with President Macron winning the run-off votes of 78% of higher degree-holders, 63% of degree-holders, 53% of those with a baccalaureate, but just 44% of those with no qualifications.
The commentator David Goodhart attempted to explain these data by introducing the notion of “Anywheres” and “Somewheres”. The former are those who do well at school, go to good universities before progressing to well-paying jobs in big cities or overseas. The latter, leaving school with few or no qualifications, find the university route blocked so are forced into low-paying jobs in their hometowns with little or no opportunity for progression. The modern globalised world works for “Anywheres”. It does not for “Somewheres”. To Goodhart, Brexit and the other political upheavals of recent years represent an attempted revolution by a group who finds itself in a world which no longer caters to its needs.

The common person, equipped with a superb neural system as the result of millions of years of animal evolution, cringes at large structures (i.e. buildings) that communicate a psychological threat. There are sound medical reasons for not ignoring such a negative reaction, since experiencing long-term stress is known to generate pathologies in the body.
The hegemony of the architecture-industrial complex — consisting of building financing, global construction, media-certified “star” architects, real-estate speculators and a machinery of architectural education resolutely stuck in dogma and ideology — crushes public opinion. It has managed to silence the occasional protesting voices for decades.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now capable of judging what sort of buildings and environments are good for our health and psychological wellbeing. The tests are ridiculously easy to perform. We finally possess a set of powerful tools that are ready to finish off a century of absurdly inhuman architecture.

Despite massive and systemic problems with for-profit Medicare plans denying care to seniors while costing the government more than $7 billion annually in excess fees, the leading advocacy group tasked with protecting older Americans is welcoming the privatization of the national health insurance program — while earning as much as $814 million annually from insurers advertising the plans.
The state of affairs lays bare a conflict inside AARP, the major advocacy organization for Americans 50 and older, over how to approach the regulation of Medicare Advantage, the for-profit version of Medicare.

Patients at North Carolina-based Atrium Health get what looks like an enticing pitch when they go to the nonprofit hospital system’s website: a payment plan from lender AccessOne. The plans offer “easy ways to make monthly payments” on medical bills, the website says. You don’t need good credit to get a loan. Everyone is approved. Nothing is reported to credit agencies.
In Minnesota, Allina Health encourages its patients to sign up for an account with MedCredit Financial Services to “consolidate your health expenses.” In Southern California, Chino Valley Medical Center, part of the Prime Healthcare chain, touts “promotional financing options with the CareCredit credit card to help you get the care you need, when you need it.”
As Americans are overwhelmed with medical bills, patient financing is now a multibillion-dollar business, with private equity and big banks lined up to cash in when patients and their families can’t pay for care. By one estimate from research firm IBISWorld, profit margins top 29% in the patient financing industry, seven times what is considered a solid hospital margin.

Organized retail crime is when dozens of criminals descend on a store and loot it. Store employees are almost always told not to interfere, and police rarely do anything. In California, theft has been more or less legalized up to $950. It is a misdemeanor, which means it is rarely prosecuted. Major retail chains have closed their operations in San Francisco, among other cities, because they were helpless against teams of organized looters.
Looters don’t consume the stolen property themselves, they sell it on Amazon or other services. This is why it is “organized retail crime.”

Remember orphanages? Orphanages used to be good places. Places that created a home for the homeless, structure for the parentless, love for the abandoned and lost. Alexander Hamilton was an orphan. His widow, Eliza, was rightly praised for founding the Orphan Asylum Society, the city’s first private orphanage, a home for hundreds of children.
And then, along the way, the orphanage, like so many institutions that are born with the best of intentions, became corrupted. It turned, over time, from its primary mission, and, slowly became a place for the administration and staff to assure their own futures. When the full weight of the inhumanity of orphanages became clear to all, they were phased out in favor of foster care and other approaches. (Note that Hamilton’s orphanage continues, in a different form, today).
And, of course, everyone who was forced to read Dickens in school (and, like Hillary Clinton, has never had an original idea or ounce of curiosity) thinks that it’s still 1840 England and orphanages are still the hellholes he described … much like the people who think this is still 1858 and blacks are still slaves.
We have seen this trend across virtually every institution that was designed to care for others. Public schools were once truly excellent. Then, as the institutions aged, they sought to do what all bureaucracies do over time: perpetuate themselves and maximize power. Teachers’ Unions are now about the teachers, not the students. And in recent years, we have seen the corruption of the once great institution of public schools extend to include the promotion of transgenderism and grooming. The question of whether students are being treated kindly is laughably distant from reality: today’s children are being brutally used and manipulated to promote and expand specific ideologies.
Much like schools in totalitarian states like Soviet Russia and Communist China. Or any Muslim-majority state anywhere.

ZMan peers behind the curtain.
Starting somewhere in the middle of the last century, American corporations decided that they needed to invest in developing their managers. Historically, American business relied on nature and the tools of society to cultivate their workforce. The workers would get a basic education in the public schools. Natural talent and upbringing would sort the workforce the rest of the way. The best and brightest would naturally rise through the ranks to populate the management layer.
This was slowly replaced in the 20th century with a new model where senior management implemented programs to train their people, but also cultivate the sorts of people who would become managers. In the back quarter of the 20th century leadership training became popular in corporate America. Managers would receive the same sorts of leadership training officers in the military receive. Developing the next generation of corporate leaders is now a hundred billion dollar industry.
Because it has been normalized over several generations, no one notices the contradiction in these programs. All of the people subject to this training are in positions where no one would want leadership. These are administrative jobs filled with people tasked with following the rules. They may be required to supervise others who are also tasked with following rules. These are not positions that demand leadership, but rather roles that demand obedience.

Hypothetically speaking (not purely, I had anecdotal awareness of at least one occurrence a few election cycles ago), one can use ballots sent to addresses in multiple states to vote more than once in an election.
Who would know?
So, what is to prevent some wiseguy from registering in every state that automatically pushes ballots to addresses, unless removal is explicitly requested by the voter? (I supported one such case last Tuesday as an election officer here in the Old Dominion).
As far as I can tell this is Moral Hazard writ large. If there is no substantial means of detecting such fraud, and the Demsheviks can’t be arsed to enforce laws on non-conservative perpetrators anyway, then we can be relatively confident that ballot boxes will be stuffed, stuffed, and stuffed.

Briefly, for the uninitiated: In D&D a group of players collaboratively play out a story in a world created by a Dungeon Master or pre-written source material, rolling dice to simulate chance as their characters travel through the game and encounter various challenges—like the aforementioned wyverns. Characters are assigned specific abilities, and a complex set of rules, arbitrated and enforced by the Dungeon Master, standardize the game. Typically the DM spot would be determined by seniority of experience with D&D or other role-playing games—the person who’d played the longest would run the game. Alternately, it would be the person in the friend group who is the best with logistics and plan-wrangling. Back in the day, game shops would have physical bulletin boards featuring players or DMs looking to pair up.
…
Playing the role of Dungeon Master can be a rewarding job but it is sometimes thankless, and always taxing. D&D can be overwhelming to any new player; this is especially true for a DM, who needs to know all the rules, adjudicate them, create or manage the story, plan logistics for their group, and cater the experience to what each player wants. The amount of effort involved makes it inaccessible for new players and difficult for experienced ones to sustain long-term.
All of which has conspired to make it harder to find people to actually run the spiking number of campaigns. “I think a lot of DMs just want to sit back and let other people run a game,” one Dungeon Master on hiatus from running campaigns told me. “There’s a DM shortage in the tabletop community like there’s a top shortage in the LGBTQ community.”
To quote Stacy McCain: Nobody ever lived as a knight and role-played being a marketing consultant.

What have we forgotten? It’s a good question to ask ourselves this Remembrance Sunday. Forgetting is not just a question of missing friends’ birthdays or failing to send Christmas cards to second cousins. There’s a deeper, almost metaphysical form of forgetting, when we forget the inward meaning of an outward sign.
The tragedies of everyday life are made up of such forgettings. One day a woman looks up and forgets to see the man she loves in the face of her husband. A man breaks a window and rifles through a cash register. He has forgotten what it was to be a child who felt a fearful awe at the fault of breaking the law, innocence is the easiest thing to forget. A student sits alone in his room, staring at a screen, he has forgotten the joy of leaving the house in the morning, the smell of the air, the wave of sound and light that carries you from your doorstep into the world.
Tradition, made much of on the Right, decried on the Left, is in its true sense nothing more or less than remembering. We cannot and should not seek to arrest movement and change, which is the nature of life, and those who forget the past are as guilty of this as those who cling to it. Tradition looks Janus-faced to past and future in the same gesture.
Progressives, on the other hand, are like sociopath Scarlett O’Hara: “Tomorrow is another day.” This is what made Fleetwood Mac’s Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow the perfect song for Bill Clinton and indeed for the modern Democratic Party in genereral: Yesterday’s gone. Yesterday’s gone.

America didn’t just become a world power by economic and military power, but culture. And when we were done, much of the world wanted to be an American, as it had once wanted to be Greek or English. We conquered the world without intending to or even realizing it.
That culture is mostly dead now except as a bunch of corporate properties being beaten to death. The machinery of mass culture is still there, but it has no soul. The $500 million comic book spectacles and the oversaturated autotuned payola music makes money, but much of it performs better around the world than it does in America. The days when it brought us together are long gone. Mass culture now reminds us of how little we have in common.

AZCentral.com columnist Jon Gabriel wrote: “Friends in Hungary and Brazil asked how their entire nations can count votes in a few hours, while it takes Arizona a week or longer.”
As of early Friday afternoon, America’s voting system has devolved from a global beacon of democracy to an international punchline. A bright neon sign warns: “Don’t try this at home.”
Mechanical breakdowns, baffling “ballot dumps,” and inexplicable pauses in tabulation have buried the Arizona and Nevada senatorial and gubernatorial results in sand.
People keep asking why the ‘red wave’ didn’t happen as expected.
The obvious answer is that the Democrats managed to steal it once again. But, like the puppy who pees on the rug during mommy’s cocktail party, everybody has agreed not to notice. It’s my contention that pushing Senator-elect John Fetterman across the finish line in Pennsylvania was the most important goal the Deep State set for itself in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
A Fetterman victory, even more so than the “election” of Joe Biden in 2020, would demoralize what remains of conservative opposition to the progressive ascendancy in the USA.
Those who accept Mr. Fetterman’s win at face value — which seems to mean a large majority of voters — are forced into the realization that most of their compatriots are brainwashed zombies who would vote for a slime mold if it was running as a Democrat. It’s therefore no longer possible for them to view the electorate en masse as a repository of civic virtue.

ZMan is not happy.
A feature of this age that has slowly evolved to be the centerpiece of our society is the fact that nothing is on the level. The central issue with the last election, for example, is the degree of shenanigans. Few people care about the platforms or people, outside of a few absurd examples. What matters to everyone are the many questions about the integrity of the process. Ours is an age where nothing is on the level and everyone is assumed to be up to something underhanded.
America is a marketplace society and the marketplace has always been the natural hunting ground for people who like to take advantage of their fellow man. This was something the ancient Persians observed about the Athenians. The agora, as far as the Persians could tell, was where Greeks tried to take advantage of their fellow Greeks through deception. Greek democracy was the marketplace applied to the arena of politics, which meant politics was based on deception.

Joel Kotkin.
Yesterday’s Midterms were not a victory for conservative or progressive ideology, but an assertion of the growing power of geography in American politics. It was less a national election than a clash of civilizations.
…
So, what is happening in this increasingly inexplicable country? Essentially, there are now two prevailing realities in the US. One is primarily urban, single and, despite some GOP gains in this demographic, still largely non-white. It functions on the backs of finance, tech and the service industries. The other is largely suburban or exurban, family centric and more likely involved in basic industries like manufacturing, logistics, agriculture and energy.
Usually, the media assume these two Americas represent equally viable political economies. But this is increasingly not the case. In population terms at least, red America is now growing far more rapidly than blue America. And this makes it more important politically. Since 1990, Texas has gained eight congressional seats, Florida five and Arizona three. In contrast, New York has lost five, Pennsylvania four and Illinois three. California, which now suffers higher net outbound-migration rates than most Rustbelt states, lost a congressional seat in 2020 for the first time in its history.

Companies, emboldened by an economic rebound after the nadir of the pandemic, rushed to acquire talent and fill their ranks with skilled middle managers. The Harvard Business Review even wrote that middle managers are more important now than ever (Fortunewrote that story six ways to Sunday as well). But a lurking recession is now threatening the livelihoods of white-collar workers: Those higher-salaried management roles—the jobs once heralded in American society as the key to obtaining the middle-class American Dream—may be axed in waves.
As these jobs vanish in favor of blue-collar workers at more manageable costs, that pipeline to the middle class could be chopped at the knees, reports The Financial Times.
Middle-management jobs typically deal with information flows–gathering and consolidating data for upper management, supervising production processes, performing interim analytics, identifying (and hopefully resolving) production problems, and monitoring employee performance. That sort of thing is more and more being automated, significantly flattening management hierarchies.

talk about social issues ever, ever again. Instead, they would run solely on their economic message. Asked about abortion? Pivot to jobs as quickly as possible. Your opponent attacks you as a bigot on race or LGBT issues? Talk about taxes. The economy was bad, and voters, they were sure, were eager to hear their message of fiscal restraint and benefits for “job creators.”
The Democrats would be able to say whatever they want on the icky stuff—abortion, gender and sexuality, racism, whatever—but voters would ultimately take a good look at the bad economic indicators and reward Republicans with a landslide victory.
The plan failed miserably. Mitt Romney, the “safe” GOP nominee for president, lost decisively. The economic message had been vague and unmotivating, and the silence on social issues had been suicidal, permitting the Democrats to define the debate however they wanted.
Ten years later, the pony is trying that same one trick, and it’s still not working. RINO Romney declines to support his Republican Senate colleague up for re-election … will he be punished? It is to laugh.
Politics is about morality, not economics. Democrats understand this. Few Republicans do, and they’re not running for election.
