The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) somehow survived without a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office during the first 66 years of its existence. Now it has one, with a self-declared mission to “aid in the transformation of future Air and Space Force leaders.” Hudson Institute Senior Fellow John Fonte has written in this publication that “today, the goal of progressive educators is ‘fundamental transformation.’” But one seldom sees this spelled out as clearly as it has been by Air Force’s DEI office.

The “transformation” being sought isn’t one from selfish teenager to selfless man or woman prepared to serve with distinction in the U.S. Air Force. Rather, it’s from selfish teenager who believes in traditional American mores to self-obsessed adult who doesn’t. Part of the current motto of the Air Force Academy—which ditched the more spirited “Bring Me Men” 20 years ago—is “Service Before Self.” But the USAFA DEI office largely encourages the opposite.

The DEI office teaches future military officers to emphasize their own identity—the ways in which they are different from others—at the expense of unit cohesion and shared goals. It teaches, in the words of USAFA DEI chief Joseph Looney, that “it is impossible to ‘Respect Human Dignity’ as a leader if you fail to value a follower’s identity”—even if that identity defies reality. “We’re committed to supporting transgender Airmen and cadets,” says Looney. The Air Force Academy DEI office, which opened shop the same month President Biden took office, also says its mission is “to serve as the U.S. Air Force Academy’s strategic leader in structuring a shared vision of diversity and inclusion.” The notion that a DEI office would serve as a strategic leader of any sort in a military context is incredible.

America marked a grim anniversary on August 30. That was the date, two years ago, when the United States ended its military presence in Afghanistan. The war that began there in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks lasted a full two decades. The war ended with a botched American retrograde that led directly to the deaths of 13 brave servicemen and thousands of stranded American citizens and Afghan allies.

The duplicitous government of Qatar hosted the negotiations and guided the process of American surrender through all three administrations.

In the final analysis, however, the disastrous withdrawal—leading directly to unnecessary deaths, unmitigated chaos, and the return of the brutal Taliban government—is the responsibility of one man: President Joe Biden.

The judge who vacated the conviction of the disgraced former president of Penn State University after he was found guilty of covering up Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of minors could soon get a promotion.

Senate Democrats are primed to confirm Karoline Mehalchick to the Middle District of Pennsylvania on Thursday. Mehalchick, who serves as a magistrate judge in the state, has a history of contentious rulings: She has had at least 31 decisions reversed in less than a decade on the bench.

But no ruling was more controversial than her 2019 decision to let then-Penn State president Graham Spanier off on a technicality after a jury found him guilty of child endangerment in 2017. Mehalchick ruled that prosecutors had misapplied the child endangerment statute to Spanier, who in 2001 did not notify police that Sandusky, then-Penn State’s assistant football coach, raped a child on campus.

Mehalchick’s ruling let Spanier walk free for over a year, until an appeals court reinstated his original sentence. Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and sentenced to up to 60 years in prison.

The reason that conversation never happened is that it would have cost the hospital too much money.  If the hospital gave you ivermectin and sent you home, the federal government paid the hospital $3,200.  If the hospital gave you Remdesivir, the federal government paid the entire hospital bill, plus a 20% bonus.  So the hospital executives’ choice was to receive $3,200 or $500,000, which was the average hospital bill.  No contest.  Patients were going to get Remdesivir — whether they wanted it or not.

Walk into any grocery store in America and the first thing you will experience is a lie. Typically, the produce section is located at the front of the store. You have made it a few feet into the store, and you are deluged with lies. Venture further and you are swimming in an ocean of lies. The packaging of food is carefully designed to trick consumers. Tens of billions of dollars have gone into figuring out how to trick people into buying things. Of course, everything about the American diet is a lie perpetrated by the government at the behest of agribusiness. A man from Planet Candor would be horrified by the frozen food section.

The FDA assembled its outside advisers to take another look at phenylephrine, which became the main drug in over-the-counter decongestants when medicines with an older ingredient — pseudoephedrine — were moved behind pharmacy counters. A 2006 law had forced the move because pseudoephedrine can be illegally processed into methamphetamine.

Those original versions of Sudafed and other medicines remain available without a prescription, but they’re less popular and account for about one-fifth of the $2.2 billion market for oral decongestants. Phenylephrine versions — sometimes labeled “PE” on packaging — make up the rest.

Whenever the downward trend in Western intelligence gets discussed, the focus is always on the right side of the curve. America is no longer able to get to the moon because NASA is full of diversity, but it also lacks the smart guys it used to have to solve the necessary problems. In other words, the West is no longer able to make these great leaps because the decline in human capital has reduced the number of geniuses that are always needed to make those leaps.

At the heart of this line of thinking is the assumption that a society can only be successful if it is moving forward toward something and expanding in terms of material prosperity and cultural progress. This may be true, but it is one of those assumptions that has been handed down so many times that no one remembers who made the original claim or why they made it. Why must the economy always expand? Why must humanity expand its domain to the stars?

One reason to ask those questions is to think about the other side of the bell curve that gets neglected in these discussions. What happens to a society when the supply of stupid people increases? The model of societal intelligence is always a smooth normal distribution, so when the number of smart people declines it means the number of stupid people must increase. The curve moves left. What is the impact on society when the curve moves beyond some critical point?

No one will argue that Sept. 11, 2001, wasn’t the worst day the United States has endured this century – an unspeakable tragedy that brought out an incredible amount of raw emotion, with images and memories forever burned into our brains.

The next day, it was like we were living in a different country. The outpouring of patriotism was off the charts, with more flags than you’d see on the Fourth of July, while people wore red, white, and blue ribbons. Emotions were still running high, but there was a sense of unity that had been missing for years. By the end of the week, a joint session of Congress made it look like we were living up to the “united” part of the United States of America, with politicians working across the aisle.

Twenty-two years later, all that togetherness is forgotten, leaving a country completely polarized. The “aisle” in Congress no longer exists, having become an impenetrable wall. And now, the wall being constructed by elites is one between conservatives and liberals in every neighborhood.

The voyage of discovery that science offers can take us furthest when it is open to the best and brightest, regardless of who they are and where they come from. Great scientific minds often emerge from unexpected backgrounds. Many scientific disciplines remained effectively closed to ethnic minorities and to women for far too long. In a desire to include women and minorities, white males are often excluded, and too often women and members of minority groups are tokenized by being promoted primarily for their gender or skin color.

In the group madness provoked by Hillary Clinton’s loss, the dirty secret was that she had actually bought the Democratic National Committee in 2016, meaning the machinery that runs the party. She used lavish contributions to the Clinton Foundation to accomplish that. And Hillary along with her foundation — and husband Bill, who had been reduced by late career misadventure to a kind of political fashion accessory — had committed any number of grave crimes against our country over the years, especially during her service as Barack Obama’s Secretary of State. Think: Skolkovo… Uranium One…. In 2016 Hillary used her ownership of the DNC to underhandly de-rail the likely Democratic primary winner, Bernie Sanders, from being nominated.

For the past several years, my friends in public health and science have expressed astonishment and professional disorientation at the behavior and messaging of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Here’s evidence, if anyone needs it, that rent control contributes to housing scarcity: a new report says that more than 13,000 rent-controlled apartments have been vacant for at least two years. Nearly 90,000 rent-controlled apartments were vacant in 2021 and more than 60,000 were still vacant in 2022.

When people leave a New York City rent-controlled apartment, landlords are allowed to raise the rent for the next occupants by $89 a month. Too often, that’s not enough to pay for the repairs and other work needed to make the apartment attractive to new renters. As a result, the apartments sit vacant, waiting for the owners to sell or, less likely, for the rent control law to be repealed.

To paraphrase Karl Marx, a specter is haunting the United States and the Western world more broadly: the specter of woke despotism. Most disturbingly, its epicenter is in the United States, a land once gloriously immune from the ideological and totalitarian temptations that so haunted and deformed European politics in the 20th century. As Christopher Rufo demonstrates in his indispensable new book, America’s Cultural Revolution, the woke revolution has been gaining traction for a very long time and is now on the cusp of “controlling everything,” from our universities and corporations to the prestige media to the increasingly censorious network of “social media” that stands in for civic discourse in the United States today.

Denunciations of “dog-whistle politics” are now a familiar part of contemporary public discourse. The metaphor refers to the high-pitched sound that calls canines but cannot be heard by humans, and it is used to imply that an apparently neutral policy or argument is actually a subtle or coded appeal to the biases of a select audience. Deploying politically coded messages in this way is a serious accusation, evidenced in a sample of recent headlines: “Politicians Should Stop Using Confusion Over Trans Issues as a Dog Whistle for Intolerance” (from the Globe and Mail), “The QAnon Dog Whistle at the SCOTUS Confirmation Hearings” (from the Atlantic), “Aitchison Condemns Lewis’ Nuremberg Email as ‘Dog Whistle’ to COVID Vaccine Critics” (from CTVNews), “Haley Sounds Her Dog Whistles As She Makes a Play for the MAGA Base” (from the Washington Post), “Backlash Against ‘Dog Whistle’ Labour Tweet About Rishi Sunak” (from the Daily Telegraph), et cetera, et cetera.

The term’s origins are murky, but it made an early appearance in a 1988 remark by Washington Post pollster Richard Morin, who warned that a “dog whistle effect” should be considered in answers to the paper’s surveys when “respondents hear something in the question that researchers do not.” Twelve years later, Australian journalist Tony Wright was among the first to use the term as a reproach, when he wrote about Australian Prime Minister John Howard, whose views on immigration and Aboriginal issues were supposedly playing to white nativism:

The end of summer is finally here, which means the election season officially starts. I have said this a million times, but it bears repeating. I am not all that interested in this election. There is a very good chance that it makes 2020 look like the model of integrity. The shenanigans in both parties will set all-time single season records for shenanigans. I like shenanigans as much as the next guy, but I am struggling to get interested in what is coming down the road.
The reason is mendacity fatigue. There is a limit to how much lying one can take before you find it both boring and exhausting. Everything the Never Trump loons say is a lie. Everything the various influencers online say about the candidates is a lie. The regime toadies do nothing but lie. Of course, the regime is a volcano of lies that rain down on us all day, every day. It is exhausting trying to keep up with the lies and there is no real benefit to doing it. It is all a pointless noise.
That is another thing that is sapping my interest. If there was some chance that someone could do something useful in the White House, I could maybe talk myself into grasping at that straw, but that is the lesson of the last decade. There is so solution at the ballot box. If by some miracle Trump wins, we know he will do nothing, even if he actually tries to do something. None of the zombies will do anything but more of the things everyone hates.
Maybe that is the 4-D chess being played. The people in charge have grown tired of the farce of elections, so they are trying to make them as awful as possible. At some point they offer blessed relief by cancelling further elections. To save our democracy, we have to end these terrible elections that are causing people to lose faith in democracy. It sounds ridiculous, but is it anymore absurd that the stuff we now see every day in the political system?

Ali Bongo was elected President of Gabon in 2009, re-elected in 2016, and again this week. Many election observers complained of multiple voting irregularities in all three elections, but Mr. Bongo told a friendly media that those observers were enemies of democracy, the people had spoken, and he would humbly serve his country as he was called upon to do. Coincidentally, he has been accused of attempting to control the media as well.

Gabon is a member of OPEC and brings in billions in oil revenue every year, but the population remains poor. Mr. Bongo has been accused of enriching himself and his family by selling influence to foreign interests. He has used the police and the courts to prosecute his political opponents. He has even used riots and violent gangs to intimidate voters who don’t support him.

I know what you’re thinking — thank God I live in the land of the free and home of the brave — nothing like that could ever happen here. Gosh, those poor third-world people sure have screwed up politics, don’t they? Lordy.

Pretty much everyone now agrees that shutting down our schools during the covid epidemic, at the demand of teachers’ unions, was one of the most catastrophic policy decisions of modern times. As I have said before, it is unfortunate that some old and very sick people had their demises hastened by covid, but what government did to our children, for no good reason, was a crime.

Having skipped school for a year or more courtesy of the teachers’ unions, a great many kids have never gone back, at least not on a consistent basis. Why should they, once not showing up got the official OK? Alpha News has the distressing statistics for Minnesota. True, Minnesota is a deeply troubled state. But I doubt the numbers would be much different in other blue states.

People are realizing that government schools aren’t the valuable asset that they once where, and are now actively harmful, both to a child’s education and to society in general. Parents are discovering that there are other and better resources available. In a (mostly) free-market system, that’s all it takes.

A few years ago, my daughter-in-law, an RN who left nursing for a better-paying administrative job in an expanding hospital conglomerate, almost quit when she was assigned to call doctors listed on a computer printout to tell them that they were spending too much time per patient and that was deemed unacceptably inefficient. Several told her that they were going to quit anyway because it was an intolerable setup.

My first legal job as a law student paralegal was doing document searches at NIH and the Library of Congress for medical malpractice litigators. (The world would not be online for another decade or so). I was hired in part because I had been a clinical lab tech in the Army and had worked nights at a local large hospital lab so I could navigate the material. Aside from a few cases involving really bad docs, it was surprising how much of a liability problem there was in information management and flow: Important things missed with disastrous results.

It seemed (seems?) as if MDs had to be dragged kicking and screaming into a far more integrated team approach in an increasingly complex environment. How do we encourage, liberate, and reward the best performers at every level and yet still make the quality of delivery uniformly better? I have seen firsthand that a change of shift from one set of nurses to a less gifted or less motivated crew is like night and day for service quality (and malpractice risk). The personal touch matters. A lot of medicine appears to remain a matter of intuition, empathy, art, and virtue, not just science. Are mega-corporate environments by nature hostile to that reality?

The United States military position is of increasing vulnerability as the Army, Navy, and Air Force all fail to meet their annual recruitment goals. It is no accident, for the situation dates back to the botched withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in August 2021. It is hard for young men and women to want to join a service that was humiliated by an operation that left thousands of Afghans in the lurch—only to be executed after receiving the Taliban’s worthless promise of amnesty. Acts of this sort have long-term consequences, including precipitating what is now widely acknowledged to be an ongoing recruitment crisis for the military that could jeopardize the status of the all-volunteer force that has been a staple of American policy for fifty years. The shortage is fed by a general loss of confidence in the military by the American public—the number stands at 60 percent, the lowest in over two decades.

There are, as ever, multiple innocent explanations for the shifts in supply and demand, so the now-chronic shortages can be attributed in part to other socioeconomic factors beyond the ability of the military to recruit. The low unemployment rate offers potential recruits an enlarged set of nonmilitary options. A second factor is the apparent increase in parental pressure to attend college before settling on a career, which reduces the supply for military positions. There are additional difficulties on the supply side. High on this list are the declining fitness of potential recruits, who grapple in increasing numbers with obesity, drugs, and criminal records. This effect is then compounded by a reduced willingness to serve. It is possible of course to increase the number of recruits by lowering the standards for enlistment, as is being done, but only at the cost of a likely reduction in the performance levels of the military services. And it is also possible to sweeten the pot for potential recruits by offering them signing bonuses of up to $50,000, which, however necessary, counts as an open admission that all is not well within the system.

Over the years, he has pumped $475 million he has earned manufacturing medical devices into left-wing advocacy groups – $72 million in 2021 alone, according to a new report from the conservative watchdog group, Americans for Public Trust.

According to a biography of Wyss written by a sister, Wyss’ goal is not to bend laws to his business’s advantage but to “[re]interpret the American Constitution in the light of progressive politics.”

Although foreigners are prohibited from donating money directly to political causes, Wyss has donated lavishly to progressive political organizations. The New York Times reported in 2021 that these include the “Center for American Progress and Priorities USA, as well as organizations that ran voter registration and mobilization campaigns to increase Democratic turnout, built media outlets?accused of slanting the news?to favor Democrats, and sought to block Mr. Trump’s nominees, prove he colluded with Russia and push for his impeachment.” Since 2016, some $245 million of his spending on American politics has gone to Arabella Advisors, which controls a vast network of progressive nonprofits which, among other activities, has financed hundreds of smaller groups that campaign for specific issues and candidates. Arabella, which raised $1.6 billion in 2021, was dubbed by The Atlantic “The Massive Progressive Dark-Money Group You’ve Never Heard Of.”
