Forty-eight years later, let’s be clear on what the meaning of Chappaquiddick is. Ted Kennedy should, by all rights, have stood trial for involuntary manslaughter, which would likely have ended his political career. The fact that the Kennedy family — the original postwar dynasty of the one percent — possessed, and exerted, the influence to squash the case is the essence of what Chappaquiddick means. The Kennedys lived outside the law; the one instance in American history of an illegally stolen presidential election was the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960. He in all likelihood lost the race to Richard Nixon, but his father tried to steal the election for him by manipulating the vote tallies in (among other places) Illinois. That’s the meaning of Chappaquiddick. too.

Naruto the macaque monkey took the image in the Indonesian jungle in 2011 when it picked up a camera owned by David Slater from Monmouthshire.

Peta’s appeal on the “monkey’s behalf” was dismissed but Mr Slater has agreed to donate 25% of any future revenue.
I wonder whether animals are as embarrassed by the morons in PETA as humans are?

Only to be expected — there are Democrats everywhere (even in Texas, which is why there was looting in Houston after hurricane Harvey).
‘Wait a minute, you have no evidence that these are Democrats.’ Really? Look who favors ‘redistributing income’ from those who earn it to those who don’t (and who make up the ‘Democrat base’).
All Democrats are looters at heart, even when they pretend to be ordinary citizens. When you seen crime breaking out where gangsters live among law-abiding citizens, it’s not too far a stretch to guess who’s behind it.
Most of the news bulletins I’m exposed to are on the radio, as I’m tootling around hither and yon. So it took me a while to discover that what the media call “peace activists”, “anti-racists” and “anti-Nazis” are, in fact, men and women garbed in black from head to toe, including face masks. Thus, as I pointed out on the radio last month, the violence on American streets derives from today’s paramilitary wing of the Democrat Party – antifa – working itself up over yesterday’s paramilitary wing of the Democrat Party – the Ku Klux Klan. Both have stupid pseudo-exotic self-romanticizing names and, as many commentators have observed, both have strict dress codes intended to conceal their identities. From white sheets to black bandanas is a mere fashion evolution: the purpose is the same – to do ugly things one could not confidently do with one’s face known to all.

College is the new High School and that should terrify everyone.
…
Higher education erosion is a continuation of a long trend. College graduates, we know, are not what they used to be. In 1970’s, 1-in-2 college grads aced the Wordsum vocabulary test given by the General Social Survey. Today 1-in-6 do. Using that as a proxy for IQ of the median grad, in the 70’s it was ~112, now its ~100.[1] College degrees are increasingly expensive and may increasingly signal nothing at all. The only similar good that explodes in cost while at the same time loses value is the American wedding. Black or white, selling hope means getting into the gown business.
Cal State is setting an example for the re-definition of “college readiness”towards “willingness to sit tight and pay the cash.” They are announcing college credit for courses that 9th graders should have completed (The typical grade for Algebra 1). The pessimistic take is easy to formulate: A reduction in academic rigor, pushing what were once high school expectations into college, happening in the largest college system in the US. If anyone can explain why we should be happy with a future of thousands of college grads with high school reading skills, I’m all ears for the optimism.

The founder of the web browser Opera has accused Google of “anti-competitive” practices.
“A monopoly both in search and advertising, Google, unfortunately shows that they are not able to resist the misuse of power,” wrote Jon von Tetzchner, now CEO of Vivaldi, in a blog post on Monday.
He also intimated there may have been a connection between an interview published in tech glad-rag WIRED, where he criticised data gathering and ad targeting by Google and Facebook, and the suspension of Vivaldi’s Google AdWords accounts two days later.

Ethnically diverse Los Angeles boasts a population that’s nearly half Latino, 10 percent Asian, and 10 percent African American. The metropolitan area is also home to the largest charter school program in the country. In May, Los Angeles voters put school choice supporters in charge of the Los Angeles Unified School District board, a show of support for parents’ right to decide where to send their kids for an education.
In fact, demographic data across the United States show that charter schools are remarkably ethnically diverse. As of 2014, some 27 percent of the more than 3 million charter students nationwide were African American and 31 percent were Latino, according to Department of Education numbers.
So it would be more than a little disingenuous to attack school choice as a tool of racists. But that’s exactly how American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten is responding to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ push for more parental control.

Our grieving nation breathed a sigh of relief when the Associated Press broke the news that Hurricane Harvey was not a racist.
“Black, white, rich, poor: Storm Harvey didn’t discriminate,” read the headline, because the important thing to remember is that even though people were drowning by the dozens and disease was spreading rapidly and tens of thousands were losing everything they’ve ever owned, at least we could all clasp hands and celebrate the fact that Harvey—who may or may not be a white male—had no problem with indiscriminately killing human beings of all colors and ethnic backgrounds.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner—a man not quite as black as a roasted coffee bean but is getting there—graciously assured the city’s estimated 600,000 illegal immigrants that he would block any efforts to deport them should they check into city shelters seeking solace from the storm.
Wait—600,000 illegal immigrants? Houston has more illegal immigrants than either Milwaukee, Las Vegas, or Albuquerque has people?

Scientific American, usually a reliable Voice of the Crust, let somebody under the wall.
In a 1946 essay in the London Tribune entitled “In Front of Your Nose,” George Orwell noted that “we are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.”
The intellectual battlefields today are on college campuses, where students’ deep convictions about race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation and their social justice antipathy toward capitalism, imperialism, racism, white privilege, misogyny and “cissexist heteropatriarchy” have bumped up against the reality of contradictory facts and opposing views, leading to campus chaos and even violence. Students at the University of California, Berkeley, and outside agitators, for example, rioted at the mere mention that conservative firebrands Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter had been invited to speak (in the end, they never did). Demonstrators at Middlebury College physically attacked libertarian author Charles Murray and his liberal host, professor Allison Stanger, pulling her hair, twisting her neck and sending her to the ER.*
One underlying cause of this troubling situation may be found in what happened at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., in May, when biologist and self-identified “deeply progressive” professor Bret Weinstein refused to participate in a “Day of Absence” in which “white students, staff and faculty will be invited to leave the campus for the day’s activities.” Weinstein objected, writing in an e-mail: “on a college campus, one’s right to speak—or to be—must never be based on skin color.” In response, an angry mob of 50 students disrupted his biology class, surrounded him, called him a racist and insisted that he resign. He claims that campus police informed him that the college president told them to stand down, but he has been forced to stay off campus for his safety’s sake.

The underlying story is being passed around like a doobie by the hipster left; I’ve seen half-a-dozen reposts in various places.
Ms. Evans is African-American, Ms. Ramos Latino.
Uh, there is also the difference that Ms. Evans started in a blue collar workforce, 20th Century upstate New York, dominated by native-born Americans, while Ms. Ramos started in a blue collar workforce, turn of the century California, dominated by immigrants.
Of course, as in virtually all articles about one of the two key I-Words — inequality — there is no mention of the other key I-World — immigration.
And, of course, a single comparison between two cherry-picked examples is sufficient to drive government policy among the Chattering Class.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has reportedly transferred millions of donated dollars to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Bermuda, The Washington Free Beacon reported Thursday.
My, what a surprise. Like most such ‘progressive’ organizations, the SPLC is basically a scam, grifting money out of well-intentioned people in order to line their own pockets.
“I’ve never known a US-based nonprofit dealing in human rights or social services to have any foreign bank accounts,” Amy Sterling Casil, CEO of consulting firm Pacific Human Capital told the Free Beacon. “It is a huge red flag and would have been completely unacceptable to any wealthy, responsible, experienced board member who was committed to a charitable mission who I ever worked with.”
No kidding.

Investors Go Where Trump Won’t: To Immigrant Entrepreneurs There is, of course, not a shred of evidence that Trump has anything against ‘immigrant entrepreneurs’; it’s just part and parcel of the old ‘Against illegal immigration? Why do you hate immigrants?’ hysteria.
The ludicrously misnamed Southern Poverty Law Center has become a scam operating as a left-wing hate cult. The SPLC specializes in directing something far beyond the Orwellian Two Minutes Hate to the likes of Charles Murray and Ayaan Hirsi Ali and others it designates for opprobrium as “extremists” or a “hate group.” Where once was Emmanuel Goldstein and his followers is now Murray, Ali and a host of others guilty of thoughtcrime.
Earlier this year Charles Murray responded to the SPLC’s libel of him in “Charles Murray’s SPLC page as edited by Charles Murray.” This week Ms. Ali took to the New York Times to ask why the SPLC is hating on her and her friends.
If there is such a thing as a “hate group,” the SPLC is it. Indeed, I think it can safely be declared “Our leading hate group.”
As a result of which:
In the column linked above Ms. Ali notes that the SPLC has hit the jackpot in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville that left one woman dead and 19 injured. It “is set to receive millions of dollars in donations” from Apple, JPMorgan Chase and others. John noted Apple’s $1 million pledge to the SPLC last week; Apple will also match employee donations to the SPLC on a two-for-one basis.
Why do liberals hate so much? Because that’s where the money is. (Just ask Al Sharpton.)

The group currently hosts anti-police workshops called “Our Enemies in Blue.” The group draws inspiration from convicted murderers and calls for violence against the police, theft of goods, and armed insurrection.
Antifa websites like It’s Going Down, Sub.Media and Insurrection News have been promoting the group, which calls itself the Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement, calling on their readers to donate to a Fundrazr account for the creation of the new cell.

Camerota asked how many panelists were troubled by President Donald Trump’s response to Charlottesville, and not a single panelist raised their hand.
“I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I mean he addressed the problem. Let’s face reality, there are problems on both sides,” panelist Bob Viera said.
Which won’t stop Democrats and the Media (but I repeat myself) from lying about it.
“I think it’s ridiculous to have me choose between Hitler and Stalin which is what I consider what both groups are,” he added. “If you’re willing to set fires and burn places to the ground, that doesn’t seem like a very peaceful group to me.”
As indeed they are not. But no doubt that’s Trump’s fault as well — everything is Trump’s fault, even Democrat stupidity and venality.

Note that it was the anti-Trumpers, not the ones attending the rally, who descended into violence.
“People in the crowd have begun throwing rocks and bottles at police. They also dispersed some gas in the area,” Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sergeant Jonathan Howard said.
“Police have responded with pepper balls and OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray in an attempt to disperse the crowd and stop the assaults,” he said.

Media reports said some protesters had thrown bottles at police.
Rewriting the past to help disinherit the powerless by demeaning their ancestors is an ancient practice currently growing in popularity. For example, this summer in Madison and Boston, government officials have obliterated or covered up grave markers commemorating prisoners of war who died in captivity.
This is justified as punching up against white supremacy. After all, who is more powerful than a dead POW?
Why are politicians today going out of their way to disrespect Confederate soldiers who died in Union prison camps more than 150 years ago? Because they can. Because this kind of vandalism is a classic turf-marking exercise understood by even the dimmest juvenile delinquents. Because desecration of memorials to the dead signifies that their living heirs are vulnerable to rapacity.

This week’s Charlottesville city council meeting exploded when protesters clashed with police and yelled obscenities at the city’s mayor.
The protesters who attended the meeting Monday were upset with the city’s handling of a white supremacist rally two weekends ago.
…
Then, one group of protesters went to the front of the room with a large sign that read, “blood on your hands,” prompting cheers from the rowdy crowd. The group cheered even louder when the city council members finally left the room, and the live stream of the event cut off when some yelled “fuck you!”
I rather doubt that these protesters were Trump supporters.

We’ve been hearing a lot about “right-wing violence” lately. If we’re to believe our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters, there’s a Klansman on every street corner and a Nazi under every bed. There’s nothing more terrifying than a “white nationalist” who lives in his mom’s basement, which is why it’s okay for feral Antifa children to beat these guys up and drench them with balloons filled with piss. It’s “self-defense.”
But what happens when an act of violence is irrefutably motivated by left-wing ideology? What happens if, for example, a Bernie Bro named James T. Hodgkinson shoots at a bunch of congressmen for the explicit reason that he hates Republicans and wants them dead? How do we fit that into the preferred narrative?
We can’t. There’s no way. So we just leave it out entirely.
He’s not part of the Narrative, dude, so he doesn’t exist.

“One has to take sides,” Shuja Haider wrote at Jacobin, echoing other voices on the left. “There is a side that asserts our common humanity and fights fascism, racism, and hate. It was represented in Charlottesville by the leftist groups who took to the streets to confront the far right. The other side is the one that took innocent lives on those same streets.”
Take a side? You bet. But Haider and company are trying to force a false choice. They’d have you believe that advocates of free speech, open society, tolerance, and peaceful political change have to pick between fascists with tiki torches and masked “anti-fascists” clashing with them in the streets. But advocates of a free, open, and liberal society are a side—the correct side—and the left-wing and right-wing thugs battling in the streets are nothing more than rival siblings from a dysfunctional illiberal family.
