Although a small army of media fact-checkers claim otherwise, Joe Biden wants to end single-family zoning in America’s suburbs. On the first night Republican National Convention, Patricia McClosky said that Joe Biden and the radicals now running the Democratic Party “want to abolish the suburbs altogether by ending single-family home zoning.” McCloskey’s claim set off a frenzy of media fact-checks, all insisting that it just isn’t so. Nonetheless, McCloskey had it right.

The most egregiously mistaken McCloskey fact check was also the most widely disseminated. Thomas Beaumont’s fact check for the Associated Press was, like many other AP stories, reposted and reprinted at scores of local news outlets. Yet this supposed fact check was utterly confused and thoroughly mistaken. According to Beaumont, “Biden does not propose banishing single-family homes.” Or again, “[Biden] does not support requiring municipalities to refrain from building single-family homes as a condition for getting money from HUD — the heart of the distorted claims by Trump and the McCloskeys.”

The catastrophe that has befallen Minneapolis this year gets a soft focus treatment in the the Eric Roper/Maya Rao Star Tribune story “‘Hard to be downtown’: Between riots and COVID, allure of downtown Minneapolis tested.” Subhead: “Six months into pandemic, downtown remains largely empty with 85% of area’s workforce still at home.”

Staff writers Liz Navratil and Jim Buchta also contributed to the Star Tribune story. It takes four reporters and an editor or two to come up with such a blurred picture of the catastrophe.

Last week’s riots and looting in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, a few blocks from the offices of the Star Tribune, were the last straw for at least two businesses that had hung in there until now. A couple of days back, volunteer medic and guard Kyle Rittenhouse defended himself from a murderous armed mob and shot a rapist who was trying to take his rifle, a criminal who was approaching him with a pistol in his hand, and a rioter and documented repeat offender who attacked him with a skateboard. The left says he’s a murderer, he has been charged with first-degree murder, and the man who charged him with a pistol (and who says he regrets not emptying a magazine into him) has not even been detained.

Last night, Trump supporters drove through Portland to show their support for the president. Of course, this is their legal right. They were attacked many times. After things quieted down, a white terrorist walked up to a Trump supporter, shot him twice, and left. There is no indication that the Trump supporter did anything wrong. The shooting is on video. There was no struggle. So far, it looks like an execution.

Leftists in Portland and across America claimed a Trump supporter had murdered someone. Then the truth started leaking out, and they celebrated because a Trump supporter had been killed.

So what happens now?

The teenager who was charged with shooting rioters while defending stores in Kenosha has reportedly been shafted from gathering donations on GoFundMe, but other organizations have stepped up.

“A legal team says it will defend Kyle Rittenhouse, charged in the fatal shooting during protests in Kenosha this week, and has set up a fund for the 17-year-old’s legal fees,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported August 27. Rittenhouse described “himself as part of a militia protecting businesses” amidst the riots over the shooting of Kenosha resident Jacob Blake.

Mike Forcia, a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, is charged with criminal damage to property. Forcia, also a Twin Cities American Indian Movement activist, organized the June 10 American Indian Movement rally at the Capitol that resulted in the toppling of the statue, which came as many similar monuments were being pulled down worldwide after Floyd’s death in late May.

The toppling came after a State Patrol captain warned Forcia of criminal consequences and urged him to work through a Capitol planning board to remove the statue, according to the complaint.

A new tyranny over the mind has arisen at some institutions of higher learning where open, diverse, and competing ideas across the spectrum of human interest is supposed to be the ideal. The last several years have been filled with numerous instances in which mobs of students and groups of professors have pressured university administrators to either prevent or revoke an invitation for an outside speaker to come to that campus because the vocal critics oppose the proposed speaker’s social, political or economic views.

When such an outside speaker has still appeared on such a campus, they have been greeted with crowds condemning their viewpoint even before the visitor has had the opportunity to express it, or has been drowned out by derogatory chants and slogans, or in a few cases they have been physically threatened and even assaulted.

Looters used to just loot their own dumpy neighborhoods, but in 2020 they’ve gotten much more enterprising. To mourn George Floyd et al, they drive in to the most expensive neighborhoods in the metropolis and loot stores they’ve heard about from rap songs.

A news story today reports that “Portland’s top newspaper reported Tuesday that after weeks of unrest in the city’s downtown, the ‘main action’ appears to have shifted to neighborhoods just outside the city.”

This has suburban residents very concerned, as one might imagine. As the mostly peaceful rioters and looters focus their efforts at urban renewal on residential neighborhoods, the nice liberal Portland suburb dwellers are struggling to criticize the wanton destruction of their own neighborhoods without sounding racist. A nice liberal can’t criticize Black Lives Matter, right? Not even if that organization has just peacefully protested their neighborhood into a post-apocalyptic video game cityscape.

Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris to be his running mate shows the shallowness of the Democrats’ talent pool.  Biden handicapped himself by explicitly pledging to ignore men and then implicitly bowing to the demand that his female choice be black.  However, it’s still somewhat shocking that, out of all the black, female, Democrat politicians in America, the best he could do was Kamala.

What’s most striking about Kamala is that, like Barack Obama, she has nothing in common with the American black experience.  Despite her slamming the race card on the table, the only thing she shares with the generic “black vote” is skin color.
