Did Erdogan Order His Generals to Sink a Greek Warship?

2nd September 2020

Read it.

Could war finally be coming to the eastern Mediterranean? It’s not as excitable a question as it might first appear. In an article titled, ‘Erdogan’s calculated war,‘ the German newspaper Die Welt quoted sources from the Turkish military saying that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had recently ordered his generals to sink a Greek warship, without inflicting casualties. They refused. Then came the suggestion to down a Greek aircraft. Again, they refused.

Greeks and Turks have been at war for 1000 years. This is about as much a surprise as violence between Hindus and Muslims in India.

The Trojan War started around 1260 BC, so it would be safe to say Greece and Turkey have been at war for most of 3,000 years. The whole Christian/Muslim dynamic didn’t help reduce any tension. Erdogan seems hell-bent on trying to pick a fight with somebody – anybody – which is kind of a classic megalomaniac thing to do.

No, the Turks didn’t get into Greek territory untill the 11th century; the Seljuks captured Baghdad in 1055 and started raiding in Anatolia, which is what the Greeks had left after the original wave of Muslim conquests.
