A woman was charged with making a threat of violence against a Republican election official in Michigan, federal authorities announced Wednesday.

Katelyn Jones, 23, allegedly sent threatening photos and messages to Monica Palmer of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, the FBI wrote in a court filing cited by the Associated Press (AP). Jones reportedly sent Palmer graphic photographs of a dead woman’s naked, bloody body and threatened the safety of Palmer’s family.

According to the Journal, Texas and 8 other GOP-led states will ask a federal court Tuesday to deem the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program unlawful.

The Trump administration tried to end the program back in 2017, but faced legal hurdles. This summer, the Supreme Court determined the Trump administration did not follow proper protocol to end the program.

Texas filed its legal suit against DACA in 2018. The Journal reports the case was put on hold as other lawsuits attempting to stop the Trump administration from ending the program made their way through the courts.

The Wall Street Journal reported that “Facebook fears” violent retribution if it kicks Hindu extremist groups off the platform.

Facebook is famous for censoring peaceful conservatives, but has been slow to censor anti-Christian extremists. “Dozens of religious extremists burst into a Pentecostal church outside New Delhi in June, claiming it was built atop a Hindu temple,” The Wall Street Journal (The Journal) reported Dec 13. The group allegedly attacked the pastor and “installed a Hindu idol in protest,” an attack for which Hindu organization Bajrang Dal reportedly claimed responsibility. The Bajrang Dal video that summarized and took responsibility for the incident has been reportedly “viewed almost 250,000 times on Facebook.” The logic for why Facebook would allow such content to remain sadly gives extremist groups a clear message that violence will help them get their way.

Abigail Shrier’s book Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters was briefly removed from Target’s inventory following complaints, only to be quickly replaced following a backlash. And students at the University of Chicago have sought to have Professor Dorian Abbot publicly censured for criticizing the university’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and the censorious climate on campus. Numerous other examples abound in academia, publishing, news media, and elsewhere. Anxiety about this trend peaked over this summer and led a number of commentators to sign the Harper’s Letter in an effort to defend free speech and inquiry (an initiative that produced its own furious row).

These emotional attempts to suppress controversial or unpopular speech have increasingly made use of what I call the “Mourner’s Veto”—individuals will say that a speaker or a piece of writing has caused them to become distressed or sad or angry or frightened, and they will support these claims with allegations of “harm” or even threats to their “right to exist.” Reasonable debate and discussion then becomes impossible as activists make unfalsifiable but furiously emotive claims about alleged threats to their safety and wellbeing amid much weeping and claims of exhaustion and mental fragility. It is not healthy for the limits of permissible speech to be dictated by the most sensitive person in the room, nor to allow emotional appeals to supplant robust argument as the most effective strategy in a debate.

The “diploma divide” is now a defining feature of American politics. You can see it in the network exit poll: Democrat Joe Biden carried college-educated white voters by 35 percentage points; non-college whites were virtually tied. Non-college white men — Trump’s “base” — voted 70 percent for Trump.

As a result, two conflicting patterns now define American politics. The wealthier you are, the more likely you are to vote Republican. That has been true for nearly 100 years. At the same time, the better educated you are, the more likely you are to vote Democratic. That trend has been building since 1980.

Students invariably ask, “What happens to people who are wealthy and well educated?” The answer is, they’re “cross-pressured” — pulled in different directions. If they vote their economic interests, they vote Republican. Those who give priority to their typically liberal cultural values vote Democratic. These differences created one of the most conspicuous features of the 2020 campaign: the battle for the suburbs, where a lot of educated, higher income white voters live.
