Alternative Ageing: 68-Year-Old Woman Runs Blog to Show That Style Has No Age Limit

26th February 2018

I guess ‘style’ means wearing clothes that would look ridiculous and ugly even on a young person.

The modern world is full of people who refuse to act their age, from arrested adolescents to second-childhood seniors. This is not a good thing.

Why Can’t People Hear What Jordan Peterson Is Saying?

26th February 2018

Conor Friedersdork commits the ThoughtCrime of Noticing.

My first introduction to Jordan B. Peterson, a University of Toronto clinical psychologist, came by way of an interview that began trending on social media last week. Peterson was pressed by the British journalist Cathy Newman to explain several of his controversial views. But what struck me, far more than any position he took, was the method his interviewer employed. It was the most prominent, striking example I’ve seen yet of an unfortunate trend in modern communication.

First, a person says something. Then, another person restates what they purportedly said so as to make it seem as if their view is as offensive, hostile, or absurd.

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and various Fox News hosts all feature and reward this rhetorical technique. And the Peterson interview has so many moments of this kind that each successive example calls attention to itself until the attentive viewer can’t help but wonder what drives the interviewer to keep inflating the nature of Peterson’s claims, instead of addressing what he actually said.

Scott Adams has turned this into a verbal tag: Whenever somebody does this to him, he responds ‘Now, don’t try to Cathy Newman me….’

Trump Tax Break for ‘Hardworking Families’ Hands $29bn Profit Boost to One of World’s Richest Men

26th February 2018

Read it.

The article assumes, and assumes that the reader agrees, that this is ipso facto a bad thing.

No thought or discussion is given to the base fact that it consists of the government taking less of the company’s profit than it otherwise would have. Apparently decreased government theft is a serious moral failing.

Or perhaps it’s the fact that cutting taxes not only helps poor people but rich people as well, which it can’t fail to do since the rich are the ones who pay most of the taxes after all. Apparently it’s a moral failing as well to help poor people if there’s any possibility that a rich person might benefit as well.

And of course nobody bothers to mention that Buffet could just write a check to the IRS if he were seriously bothered about all the money he’s making. Yet he never does, and nobody ever notices.

NYT: Cryptocurrencies Are Sexist

26th February 2018

Steve Sailer fisks one of the Grey Lady’s finest.

Obviously, crypto-currencies (which may blow up the world or make it much better, don’t ask me, I don’t know) are totally sexist. The only reason Satoshi Nakamoto’s idea has swept the world is because his strong handshake, curly blond hair, red beard, green eyes, mole on his upper lip, Heidelberg dueling scar on his left cheek, gold tooth, missing last joint of his ring finger on his left hand, discreet skull & bones 322 tattoo on his right wrist, and deep gravelly voice with a Frisian accent gives Satoshi his White Male Privilege.

Children’s Crusade Comes to CNN

22nd February 2018

Scott Johnson of Power Line pulls back the curtain.

Last night CNN took up the 2018 children’s crusade that is intended to produce gun control where previously there has only been left-wing frustration. We are counseled to “do something” in a tone of unanswerable indignation. The volume is turned up to ear-shattering levels in lieu of traditional means of persuasion. In Minneapolis, students badly in need of the tools of critical thinking took the day off from school to wave slogans such as “Regulation isn’t scary, getting shot is.” The mayor joined the parade. On CNN, Senator Rubio faced up to the mob while Senator Nelson showed that he too had been shortchanged in the critical thinking department.

RealClear Politics has posted local television video of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab. Haab says he was approached by CNN to ask a question at last night’s “town hall” but decided not to after the network gave him a “scripted question” in lieu of one he wrote himself. According to the report, Haab is a member of the Junior ROTC who shielded his fellow students while the school was under attack from the shooter, said he was going to ask about using veterans as armed security guards. He appears to be an impressive young man.

This morning CNN issued a statement to the effect “that it did not, and does not, script any questions for town hall meetings, ever.” I’m surprised to see CNN disputing one of the children possessing absolute moral authority, but perhaps Haab lost his immunity somewhere along the way.

Controversy Erupts Over Whether John Oliver Can Say ‘We’ and ‘Us’ When Referring to America

21st February 2018

Read it.

The only problem is, John Oliver isn’t American. He’s not American by birth and he’s not American by paperwork. He holds a green card and is married to an American, but he himself is not a legal citizen of the United States. He doesn’t vote, he doesn’t qualify for a slew of American welfare programs, and he can’t advocate to bring family members over to the US. The only thing that makes him ‘American’ is his weekly platform that allows him to pontificate about politics and flex a Constitutionally-endowed right to say what’s on his mind.

And about time, too. Late-night beta males like Oliver, Kimmel, and Colbert may have a lot in common with the Obamacare pajama boy but not with the bulk of real Americans.

This wasn’t lost on Piers Morgan, a fellow British ex-pat who called Oliver out while watching his show.

“Watching John Oliver repeatedly say ‘we’ & ‘us’ when discussing America is comical,” he tweeted.
“Mate, you were born in the Midlands to a pair of Liverpudlian parents & speak in a thick Brummie accent. You’re about as American as cricket & mushy peas, you shameless old fraud!”

Pretty sad when you can get called out by Piers Morgan.

White Supremacist Mass Murderer? Oops, Never Mind

17th February 2018

Read it.

When some goofy member of a white supremacist group–by the way, if you ever encounter a white supremacist, please hang on to him and give me a call, I’ve never met one–told news outlets that mass murderer Nikolas Cruz was a member of his organization, Democratic Party media jumped all over it. It was reported as fact, even thought there was no confirmation whatsoever that it was true.

The Associated Press was one Democratic Party organization that hurried to associate Cruz with “white supremacists,” in furtherance of its agenda. Now the AP has recanted:

A white nationalist appears to have lied to The Associated Press and other news organizations when he claimed that Florida school-shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz was a member of his obscure group.

Law enforcement officials have said they didn’t have any evidence to support the claim that Republic of Florida leader Jordan Jereb made in interviews with several news organizations.

“Too good to check” is the central principle of Democratic Party journalism. It would be hard to read a newspaper today, without absorbing false articles that liberal reporters preferred not to verify.

Nothing could be more pedestrian than a gay person, Olympian or otherwise, ‘slamming’ the Trump administration. This is not being a ‘pioneer’, but being a tag-along. Proglodytes have gone from ‘speaking truth to power’ to ‘speaking clichés to the whipping boy’. The witch-hunt for Heretics and Sinners must ever be stoked by moral preening and posing.

Pretending Our Way to Decline

14th February 2018

Paul Mirengoff at Powerline is delightfully dyspeptic today.

I had hoped that the idiotic left-wing outrage at Attorney General Sessions’ use of the term “Anglo-American law enforcement” would dissipate without making it into mainstream discussion. The fact that former President Obama has referred to the Anglo-American nature of our justice system seemed to support my hope.

No such luck. This morning, I heard NPR pretend there is a legitimate racism story here. So did ABC Newsand the New York Daily News. (To its credit, the Washington Post countered by trying in two stories to set the record straight).

Accordingly, I must reluctantly agree with Charles Cooke’s take on this pseudo-controversy: “We’re screwed.”

We’re screwed as a polity if we must pretend that our system of law isn’t what it actually is — Anglo-American — lest we be accused of racism.

NYT’s Bari Weiss Doubles Down on False Tweet Congratulating U.S. Olympian as ‘Immigrant’ 261 Shares

13th February 2018

Read it.

New York Times Opinion editor and frequent guest on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Bari Weiss drew the ire of both the left and right Monday after she tried to score a political point using false information.

Weiss tweeted out praise for U.S. skater, Mirai Nagasu, who made history this week by becoming the first female U.S. Olympian to land a triple axel. Weiss congratulated Nagasu by touting, “immigrants get the job done.”

Problem is, Nagasu is not an immigrant–she was born and raised in California.

Apparently, like the proglodyte straw man of the ‘white supremacist’, she assumed that somebody with a non-vanilla-American name is necessarily an immigrant. Oops.

Weiss twisted herself into a pretzel trying to explain that by congratulating Nagasu as an “immigrant”, she was referring to her parent’s Japanese heritage.

Not sure how this differs from a person believing that any non-white ancestor makes somebody a Negro. (Can you say ‘racist’? I’m sure you won’t be allowed to.)

This goes to the heart of the proglodyte trope that ‘we’re all immigrants’. No, we’re not all immigrants.

I was born here; I am not an immigrant. My parents were born here; they are not immigrants. My grandparents were born here; they are not immigrants. I know of one great-grandparent who came from Ireland, but the other seven were not immigrants. The fact that almost all of my ancestors came from somewhere else at some point IS NOT PROOF that I am IN ANY WAY an ‘immigrant’, proglodyte fantasies to the contrary notwithstanding. This is the sort of perversion of the language that gives us ‘gay marriage’ and ‘gender identity’ and other attempts to corrupt thought by corrupting the language. Resist it, steadfast in the faith.

Family-Breakdown Denialists

13th February 2018

Kay Hymowitz speaks truth to glower.

This weekend, in a New York Times op-ed entitled “Single Mothers Are Not the Problem,” three sociologists argue that reducing single motherhood would not significantly lower poverty rates in the United States. If we were really serious about alleviating poverty, they maintain, we would introduce “generous social policies” more in line with those in other rich democracies.

It’s a textbook example of social science as advocacy, which is not to say that the study on which the Times piece was based, due to appear in the prestigious American Journal of Sociology, is fake news. The authors show that as a percentage of all households, single-mother homes have declined since 1980. Those low numbers—in 2013, only 8.8 percent of Americans lived in single-mother homes, down from 10.5 percent in 1980—mean that further reducing such households wouldn’t have much impact on national poverty rates. They also argue that single motherhood is a less useful predictor of poverty than low levels of education, unemployment, and “forming households at young ages.”

But by using the metric of “households,” lead researcher David Brady and his coauthors camouflage the primary reason that family scholars have gotten so hot and bothered about single motherhood: the children. Yes, the percentage of single-mother households has declined; that’s largely an artifact of demographic changes that have increased the overall number of households. Those changes, including mass immigration, later marriage, and more people living alone, are largely irrelevant to the well-being of American children. But during the same decades that the authors show the rate of single-parent households declining, the percentage of children living with a single mother tripled.

Sea levels ‘could be rising a centimetre a year’ by 2100, say scientists

13th February 2018

Read it.

‘Could’. That magic word. They would rise quite a bit if an asteroid hit the earth. If.

I’ll believe that the sea levels are actually rising when property in Malibu drops in price.
