If Gun Control Worked Chicago Would Be a Safe Place.

1st July 2019

Read it.

The state of Illinois holds a B+ rating from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (the highest rating given is an A). Gun control advocates would have you believe this means it should be a relatively safe place.

Yet Illinois’ largest city, Chicago, has long been an embarrassment to this notion. The city if anything has had an even lengthier list of gun controls than the state itself, but it has also seen years of terribly high rates of violent crime.

Women Fight Back Against Transgender Policies

And guess who the report finds to be ‘driving the dilution of acceptance’? Surprise, surprise – it’s ‘young women whose overall comfort levels plunged from 64 per cent in 2017 to 52 per cent in 2018.’ It turns out that being displaced in our own sports and being forced to give up our spaces, scholarships, shortlists and more is bit off-putting. Who knew?

Useful New Word: Half-pinion

1st July 2019

Scott Adams gives us a useful new word: “These are what I call ‘half-pinions’. A half-pinion is where you just look at the cost of something, or just look at the benefit, and you just sort of pretend that the other stuff doesn’t exist.”

We see a lot of that these days, especially among ‘activists’.

The Spirit of ’68

1st July 2019

Severian draws some parallels.

If I were a betting man, I’d wager that the Dems’ nominating convention in 2020 will look a lot like the Chicago convention of 1968, the famous “Chicago Police Riot.” (Ahh, the power of The Media to shape The Narrative. SDS goons do everything in their power to provoke a confrontation with the authorities; when the authorities eventually crack down, all the jock-sniffers in The Media, high on the romantic self-righteousness of self-proclaimed “revolutionaries,” proclaim that it’s the cops who started the whole thing).

In case you’re not familiar with the ’68 spectacle, you had an establishment goon representing business-as-usual (Vice President Hubert Humphrey, pinch-hitting for LBJ); a ditzy “good government” Liberal riding his brother’s coattails (Robert F. Kennedy), and a goofy hippie peacenik (Eugene McCarthy). Plus George McGovern, a slightly less goofy hippie peacenik who was so bad at politics that in 1972 he ended up getting outflanked as a peacenik by the guy who was actually right at that moment running the war.

If back in my professin’ days I was teaching this stuff, I’d assign a project: Which way did The Media break? They were all in the tank for the Democrats, of course — plus ça change and all that — but there were still enough grownups in the newsroom in 1968 that the #Wokest (if you’ll forgive an anachronism) wouldn’t automatically get all the Media love. There was no way to disguise the fact that McCarthy was the hippies’ candidate. Nor was there any way to disguise the fact that Humphrey procedurally cornholed the other two via delegate selection shenanigans, a la Hillary Clinton. All of which let Richard Nixon, of all people, campaign as the only honest man on the stage. How did it play out in that long, hot, strange summer?

Sounds like a win for Trump to me.

Was There a Civilization On Earth Before Humans?

29th June 2019

Read it.

We’re used to imagining extinct civilizations in terms of the sunken statues and subterranean ruins. These kinds of artifacts of previous societies are fine if you’re only interested in timescales of a few thousands of years. But once you roll the clock back to tens of millions or hundreds of millions of years, things get more complicated.

When it comes to direct evidence of an industrial civilization—things like cities, factories, and roads—the geologic record doesn’t go back past what’s called the Quaternary period 2.6 million years ago. For example, the oldest large-scale stretch of ancient surface lies in the Negev Desert. It’s “just” 1.8 million years old—older surfaces are mostly visible in cross section via something like a cliff face or rock cuts. Go back much farther than the Quaternary and everything has been turned over and crushed to dust.

Their Smirking Smugness

29th June 2019

The whole point of the book I’m writing is that I, like millions of others, want to see liberalism go away but of course that arouses a question — what parts of it? Not the people themselves. If I wanted actual people to go away then I’d be a liberal myself, and I’m not. I can’t be one because I don’t hate people that much.

About Kamala Harris and Busing

29th June 2019

John Hinderaker at Power Line takes a peek behind the Narrative.

Given the demography and geography of Berkeley at the time–she was 10 years old in 1974–it seems highly unlikely that Harris, the daughter of two PhDs, one from India and one from Jamaica, was bused into a white school so she could escape the ghetto and mix with the children of educated parents.

But that isn’t what strikes me most forcibly about this story. A Democratic presidential contender lied about her background for political gain? The horror! Or, rather, take a number. At least Harris hasn’t claimed to be a member of an Indian tribe.

Hey, being a fake victim worked well for Obama.

Democrat Debates

29th June 2019

Audacious Epigone has a view.

The night was clearly Kamala’s. “As the only black person on stage, I would like to speak on the issue of race.” And then she tossed and gored Biden, who, being a pale white male, had no way to counter.

Scott Adams predicted over a year ago that the modern Democrat party has no room for a nominee who is pale or male. So Kemala Harris will get the magic ticket.

I wonder whether she will try for a twofer by picking Fauxcahontas as her VP candidate? This could get entertaining.

Landscape Water Features Rotting in the Rockies

28th June 2019

Steve Sailer.

For years I’ve been having fun with the media’s Crops Rotting in the Fields trope, where growers’ PR firms fill in whatever crop is in over-abundance this year — pears, brussel sprouts, kumquats, whatever — and announce that due to the Illegal Immigrant Shortage Crisis, the Crops Are Rotting in the Fields. This seems to trigger an atavistic Oh No, We’re All Gonna Starve! emotion in reporters.

Yet here is a classic version of that article, but not even concerning food. Instead, the crisis is that rich people in Vail aren’t getting their landscape water features updated as soon or as cheaply as they’d like.

Police Charge Alabama Woman With Manslaughter for Starting Fight That Killed Her Unborn Child

Marshae Jones, 27, was shot in the stomach Dec. 4, 2018, outside a Birmingham Dollar General on Park Road. Jones was five months pregnant at the time of the shooting and was taken to UAB Hospital, but her unborn baby did not survive according to AL.com.

Authorities initially charged the shooter, Ebony Jemison, 23, with manslaughter. However, a grand jury did not indict her and police dropped the charges, AL.com reported. Jones will be incarcerated in Jefferson County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Jones initiated the fight with Jemison over Jones’ unborn baby’s father, police allege, adding that Jemison was defending herself when she shot Jones. Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid emphasized that the unborn baby relied on his or her mother for protection and that the mother “shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations.”

The Gaslights Are Lit

27th June 2019

ZMan takes a look at the Democrat field.

Three things were fairly obvious, based on Twitter. One is the Democrat media was instructed to sell the hell out of Warren, which they tried hard to do, but Warren gave them little to work with after she read her prepared lines. What they are going to learn is what people in Massachusetts know about her. Like all pols, she can read from a script and seem quite good. On her own, she reveals herself to be quite dull. Her serious egghead presentation is just an act. She is a pseudo-intellectual poseur.

Another thing that was made obvious to enthusiasts is that Beto O’Rourke is just a slacker who has been getting by on his looks. The media likes him because he has the RFK routine down cold. He knows how to charm left-wing Baby Boomers. The trouble is, once you get past the horse teeth and hairstyle, you’re left with a guy who probably spends his free time reading comic books. He is in politics because it requires the least amount of effort for the best possible lifestyle. Otherwise, he is a bum.

As Democrats Push a “Wealth Tax,” Here’s Why Other Countries Got Rid of It

27th June 2019

Read it.

I wrote five years ago about the growing threat of a wealth tax.

Some friends at the time told me I was being paranoid. The crowd in Washington, they assured me, would never be foolish enough to impose such a levy, especially when other nations such as Sweden have repealed wealth taxes because of their harmful impact.

But, to paraphrase H.L. Mencken, nobody ever went broke underestimating the foolishness of politicians.

Oh, politicians are actually very cunning; it’s just that they do what’s best for them, not necessarily what’s good for the country.

Y’all Still Really Like Eating at Chick-Fil-A, dontcha?

27th June 2019

Read it.

Around this time last year, the yearly American Customer Satisfaction Index Restaurant Report found Chick-fil-A to be its most highly-approved fast-food restaurant for the third year in a row. The report, based on data accrued from over 23,000 U.S. diners, assesses major chains on criteria from accuracy of food orders to restaurant cleanliness to variety of menu items and more.

Now, Chick-Fil-A can tack on a fourth consecutive winning year, as this year’s just-released ACSI Restaurant Report found the chicken chain at the top of its list once again. While it dropped 1% from 2018, Chick-Fil-A still maintained an overall ACSI score of 86 on a 0-100 scale, placing it five points ahead of next-highest competitor Panera with 81. At 80, there’s a four-way tie between Arby’s, Chipotle, Pizza Hut, and Papa John’s. McDonald’s remains at the bottom of the ranking, with a total score of 69.

The combination of really really good food and being a prominent victim of the Political Correctness crowd would apper to be unbeatable.

White and Bright

A new study from Georgetown University reveals that if the student bodies of the 200 most selective American colleges were enrolled solely on objective SAT or ACT aptitude test scores, their student bodies would increase from 66 percent white under the current subjective system to 75 percent white.

Ironically, this study was supposed to prove, in the wake of the entertaining and immensely popular Varsity Blues scandal in which TV actresses bribed their lowbrow kids into USC instead of Arizona State, that affluent white people have unfair advantages in college admissions.

Over poor white people, perhaps.

Italy’s Salvini Calls Blocked Migrant Vessel a ‘Pirate Ship’; Tells Berlin and Amsterdam to Take Refugees

26th June 2019

Read it.

taly’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini called a NGO migrant transportation vessel a “pirate ship,” and suggested that Germany and The Netherlands should split the 43 passengers who were picked up off the coast of Libya, according to Newsweek.

“Does the European Union want to solve the Sea Watch problem? Easy,” Salvini wrote on Facebook, “Dutch ship, German NGO: Half of the immigrants in Amsterdam, the other half in Berlin. And seize the pirate ship.”

How the Libyan migrant hustle works: Libyans get in whatever barely floating thing they can find and paddle out beyond the territorial limit, where a proglodyte ‘rescue ship’ picks them up and carries the ‘refugees’ to a European port.

Italy was swamped early on, and has decided that it doesn’t want to play this game any more, which is why they are now also going to France, Spain, and Greece.

A Learning Secret: Don’t Take Notes with a Laptop

25th June 2019

Read it.

Obviously it is advantageous to draft more complete notes that precisely capture the course content and allow for a verbatim review of the material at a later date. Only it isn’t. New research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer demonstrates that students who write out their notes on paper actually learn more. Across three experiments, Mueller and Oppenheimer had students take notes in a classroom setting and then tested students on their memory for factual detail, their conceptual understanding of the material, and their ability to synthesize and generalize the information. Half of the students were instructed to take notes with a laptop, and the other half were instructed to write the notes out by hand. As in other studies, students who used laptops took more notes. In each study, however, those who wrote out their notes by hand had a stronger conceptual understanding and were more successful in applying and integrating the material than those who used took notes with their laptops.

I would have killed for a laptop when I was in college.
