So what separates a ‘dog-napper’ angling for ‘ransom’–maybe in the way of a ‘finder’s reward’–from a ‘humanitarian’ just ‘trying to do the right thing’?
When we know the rest of the details of this story, then we can make a judgement over whether this was a Good Deed Punished, or a Scammer Caught.
Until then, keep shooting from the hip (although your foot must be getting awfully sore by now).
