Given the current revelations concerning the treatment of PTSD at JBLM, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn something along the line as detailed.

Bales’ life outside of the Army was a complete mess. It would not be surprising to learn that he’s been a functioning mental case for a long time. The military tends to focus on a certain collection of activities – e.g., “..always had his men ready…” – and if those are met, nothing else matters.
Consider this: How many military personnel have been stationed in “The Sand Box”? Take that number of civilians and tell me how many of them are likely to do something crazy. It’s surprising that in 10 years of fighting there haven’t been many, many more cases like this.
