And he’s exactly right. If the ordinary voter is as stupid as term-limit legislation assumes, then the ordinary voter is too stupid to be allowed to vote. You can’t have it both ways. Either you support democracy or you don’t. People ought to be obliged to live with their choices.

As a candidate, I was asked by a newspaper editor if I supported term limits “as a means of restoring voters’ faith in government.” I replied no, because it wouldn’t do that. Term limits, I told him, is a surrender to voters’ cynicism.
But I was running to unseat an incumbent; if I had won, it would have been proof that term limits aren’t necessary.
