By “world”, he must mean Canada, or perhaps some subset of Canada.
1. Explorers who make it back safely are heroes. (e.g., Neil Armstrong, Charles Lindbergh, Christopher Columbus)
2. Explorers who endure amazing hardship and make it back are really cool heroes. (e.g., Apollo 13 crew, Shackleton’s crew, Lewis & Clark)
3. Explorers who disappear mysteriously are fascinating characters that generate a lot of interest. (e.g., Amelia Earhart, LaSalle)
4. Explorers who die from getting stuck, slamming into a mountain, sinking, etc. are generally forgotten within a generation. (e.g., well, none that anyone remembers)
