GAO makes this recommendation about once every 5 years – at least during my lifetime. It’s safe – because metal coins do last longer than paper – but it also doesn’t work. And, as Tim points out, the gov’t has insisted on terrible coin designs. First, the Eisenhower coin – nearly the size of a manhole cover – then the ridiculous Susan B. Anthony (another thing to thank Jimmy Carter for; BTW, when was she president?) – now the Sacajawea (oddly the best and maybe most deserving of the three).
Obama’s strategy of turning the dollar as worthless as pocket change seems to be working, so maybe that will revitalize coin usage.
