Great Was the Fall of It
18th October 2026
All the fiends of Hell have been loosed, and are now rampaging through the cities of France. Yesterday afternoon a mob set fire to the Mairie, or town hall, of Limoges. The fire raged on into the night, and eventually the building’s iconic bell tower toppled into the burning ruins.
Like the fall of the steeple of Notre Dame in Paris, the moment serves as a symbolic reminder that the great, ancient civilization known as France is rapidly approaching its smoldering finale.
I suppose you could say that the Mairie had a good run. After all, it was built in 1883, which means it’s almost twice as old as I am. But still, it breaks my heart to see that venerable clocher come down. It’s not as if any more like it will be built in France, or elsewhere in Western Europe. The grand architecture that we see now is all we’ll ever get.
Ironically enough, Limoges is a well-known leftist bastion, and its citizens routinely vote for socialists and communists. Last night the earnest citadins of Limoges got what they voted for, good and hard.
