White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirms she never passed bar exam after saying she’s a lawyer (Kathryn Watson/CBS News)  You don’t need to pass the bar exam to be a lawyer—all you need is a law degree, which she has. Passing the bar exam makes you an attorney, who can legally practice law, an entirely different thing, and one that ‘journalists’ and politicians keep getting wrong. I have a law degree, and so I am a lawyer; I never took the bar exam, and so am not licensed to practice, and hence not an attorney. This is the sort of ignorance with which we suffer on a daily basis.
