Why Should Reducing Wealth Inequality Be a Policy Goal?

Because the wrong people have seized control of the language of public policy discussion.
In the increasing debates over capitalism vs. socialism/communism, one of the assertions I read most often from anti-capitalists is that the existence of significant wealth inequality among people in a capitalistic society such as the United States shows that capitalism is “unfair.”
I note that none of these assertions are accompanied by any description of wealth distribution under communism or socialism.
Most of us here however see that every communist or socialist nation seems (at least on the surface) to have a great deal of wealth inequality. And even theoretically, a system of “equal” wealth distribution requires some limited number of people to decide (or to design a system that decides) what is “equal.” Given human nature, such systems are going to favor somebody (or at least be subject to accusations that it favors somebody).
Unfortunately the language of the Declaration have given the Levellers a huge stick with which to beat the dimwitted underclass and the products of our failed government schools.
